I went into GNC to buy my normal 1000 units of Vitamin e and liver cleanse and the woman that worked there asked me why I was taking so much vitmain e. She asked if i smoked or was exposed to chemicals. I told her no and I said I take that much because I was told I had a fatty liver but never really diagnosed as that. She said let me look at your face closely. She then said you don't have a fatty liver if you did you would have a line above your upper lip. What??? I was thinking I never heard of this. Has anyone on this board heard of this?

I've never heard of this either. I've been diagnosed with fatty liver through a biopsy. I have no line above my lip either!!!

If u were diagnosed with a biopsy then I would think that is the most accurate way to find out..right side. I excercise 6 days a week and eat a very healthy diet so I believe that is the only way to combat the fatty liver thing. I have also lost about 25 lbs since being told this info a year ago...Lisa

I had a liver biopsy about two years ago for a couple of "lesions" on my liver and the only thing they could tell me was I had a fatty liver. I don't have a line above my lip, either.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I, also, have never heard of that! Sounds very much like an old wives tale! It's like when you are pregnant, and hear all the different things about how if you are having a boy, you carry it different, etc. I was just reading about a new book out that lists all kinds of whimsical things like that, and there are very many of them! So, I guess a fatty liver is like anything else, and gets it's share of gimmicks associated with it. I was wondering about the vitamin E that you mentioned. Have you heard this from a reputable doctor to take vitamin E for a fatty liver? I am wondering because I also have been diagnosed with a fatty liver from a sonogram, I had a sonogram because I had mild increases in my liver enzymes. I have heard here and there about the vitamin E, but wasn't sure whether or not to take it. I have heard that it's better for you to take the natural vitamin E, did you know that? And, it's a very subtle difference, that's hard to look for. First of all, the REAL natural vitamin E is more expensive than the synthetic type. But, it's hard to tell which is which sometimes because the synthetic type even still says on the label that it's 100% natural, and that can be deceiving. It's something like, the natural vitamin E has an ingredient that is called d-Alpha Tocopherol, and the synthetic one varies that name with just a couple letters, I think it's something like di-Alpha Tocopheryl. Maybe you might have some more info on this. Anyway, I was wondering about the vitamin E basically, I mean so many things are gimmicks. Just look at how deceiving it is when they make it look like the synthetic is natural, I am just worried that I don't want to do my liver more harm than good, and hope it's ok to take the vitamin E. I had read before that, generally, vitamins are hard on the liver, but I don't know about the E. Anyway, thanks for any info! Good luck! V

I heard about the vitamin e from the GI man and the board here and the internet and also my health food store guru. She had hepatitis for about 14 years and now does not have it anymore. She suggested it to me. I only take all natural vitamins I don't believe in putting anything synthetic into my body regardless of cost. I was taking 1,000 units of vitamin e and from what I have read it poses no threat. Also when i went back for blood work my liver enzymes they were normal again. I heard that the vitamin e is for inflamation of the liver..the only supplements I take daily are liver cleanse, vitamin e, b-complex and evening primrose oil (hexane free). I am 46 and perimenopausal so that is why i take the primrose and b-complex. All I know is i feel great other than the fact that i know i have a fatty liver...good luck to you, Lisa

Hi,
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate the info, and I'll also check into those other supplements. I guess it's pretty safe to take the vitamin E, I also have heard it before, that it helps the liver. I was diagnosed with a fatty liver through a sonogram, is that how you found out, or did you have a biopsy? Sometimes I worry that I should have had the biopsy since that can tell the difference between simple fatty liver, and NASH, but my GI didn't seem too concerned about it. Do you notice that it's hard to find a good GI? I have had the most problems with that! My experience has just been a joke, really. I had the elevated enzymes to start with on a routine blood test, and from there it was kind of like a year long nightmare. I had a HepC test done, that came out positive, it was the HCV PCR by RNA test, and so I came on these boards and found out what that was all about, and most people here assured me that the test was probably right, that they don't have many false positives with that test. Anyway, after that I was sent to a GI, and had some tests done there, which all came out negative. Then, to be sure, he sent me for the most sensitive test they have, which was the Heptimax, which also came out negative. So, the sonogram showed fatty infiltration of the liver, so he came to the conclusion that I was actually HepC negative, but my mildly increased enzymes were due to the fatty liver. This all took so much time to find out, we had problems with the labs, it was like they were taking forever. Did you have high enzymes? The last time I checked, they were back down to normal, so I guess that's a good sign. I really haven't done much in order to achieve that, though, I haven't lost weight yet. Also, I've heard that fatty liver can sometimes be a percurser to diabetes, so that's also in my family, so I want to watch out for that. Sometimes it feels discouraging, like the writing is on the wall with these things. And, sometimes still, I still get nervous about that first HepC positive test, like how could that happen? I always wondered about it, though, because I'm at such low risk for it. Well, again, thanks for the info, and good luck to you also! Val

Val,

I was told I had a fatty liver through a CT scan with the dye. Well the GI man I go to is the top in my area and he is around 70 years old so I think he has some knolwedge. He told me that CT scans are like that( meaning they sometimes say fatty liver when there isn't any) and the only real way to detect a fatty liver is through a biopsy and he did not feel that I was at the stage to get that done. He said he felt I needed to lose weight and all issues would be resolved.

I lost 2 sizes and I am a normal weight for my height now. I have always been an athlete so my weight is really muscle I lost anyway to play it safe. I try to stay away from bad fatty foods and eat only extra virgin olive oil when i do use fat. I have always eaten alot of veggies, fruit and fish so I'm good there. My liver enzymes are normal now and he did do all the tests and my liver functions all came back normal. I do have dull pain there in the URQ (upper right quadran) but not every day. I also have a drink at night. That and coffee are my only vices..Anyway we need to live like we are dying is my motto..live life to the fullest because you never know what's down the road..Good luck to you I'm sure it's nothing to worry about and it can't hurt to lose weight if you need to..Lisa

Hi,
Thanks again for the reply, it really helps to learn all I can about this! My Mother in law just passed away, and she had liver problems, but she had AIH (autoimmune hepatitis), and severe diabetes, which lead to cirrohsis. The thing is, I worry about liver problems since I do have the fatty liver, and feel that I have a tendency toward diabetes. I know, I've heard that also, that you should have a biopsy or at least a CT scan, and all I've had is the sonogram. From what I've heard, the sonogram can't tell the difference between fatty liver and NASH. I suppose with NASH, maybe my enzymes would be more elevated and maybe I'd have some kind of symptoms. I really don't get the ache thing or anything like that, but I do have weight that I can't loose. I've heard that can be a liver problem, like your liver is sluggish, and so your metabolism is messed up. I like your idea of eating healthy, I guess it'll be quite a challenge for me to figure out what I should eat, so that my liver is healthy, and to avoid diabetes if I can. (Or at least put it off for as long as I can). It gets confusing out there sometimes, you know what I mean, right? With the Atkins or no Atkins thing, protein or no protein, I know that with diabetes, you are supposed to have more protein, but I think protein is hard on the liver. I think I eat too many carbs, but I don't want to even go near the Atkins thing. Did you say that you eat meat? I guess I should be taking this more seriously, I found out about the fatty liver over a year ago, and haven't lost any weight yet. Of course, there has been so much going on in our lives, my Dad passed away at about the same time that all this started, and my husband got relocated with his job, and now his Mom just passed away, so it's been tough. Well, thanks again so much for listening, and thanks for the advice! I wish I could help you as much! Val

Hi,
One more thing I forgot to ask you, I had noticed before about the On the Way to Cape May thing that ends each of your posts, do you mind if I ask what that means? I know that I saw your posts somewhere else, did you post on the hepatitis board? Anyway, I always remember seeing that saying, and wondering what it meant! Thanks, Val :) :)

Hi Val,

I'm sorry to hear about all of your sadness in your family. I wish you nothing but happiness. I do eat meat but only red meat once a week. I eat chicken and pork that are lean. As for the "On the way to Cape May" thing. You would have to be from the east coast to know that. The Jersey shoreline to be exact. Cape May NJ is gorgeous and historic full of beautiful Bed and Breakfasts. It' is one of my favorite spots in the world. There was a song out years ago called "On the Way to Cape May" since I go there very often with my family I thought it would be fitting for my signature..Call it my Sanctuary..Lisa ;)

Hi Lisa,
Thanks again for the reply, you've been so great about helping me! How funny, my husband's job has been in Connecticut for the past year or so, and we were supposed to relocate up there to be with him, but haven't been able to do that yet, lots of complications. Thanks so much for your best wishes. I guess these things happen in every family, we have been so lucky for so long, and then it kind of seems like all of a sudden, a lot is happening at once. I was really close with my Dad, and that's been tough, and now I feel sorry for my husband, knowing the long road he has ahead of grieving. It's only just begun for him. I guess it helps if you have faith, and I'm a little grey in that area. His Mom had alot of faith that there is life after this, and that families go on, so I guess that's nice. Anyway, my family is mostly in California and Nevada, and I'm here, and then Mark's in Connecticut. We were able to visit up there for about ten days, and it was really pretty. It's very expensive, though! We didn't get a chance to go through NYC, just saw it from a distance as we headed to Newark Airport in NJ. It's just been wierd timing, because my husband took this position thinking that we'd have a temporary time apart while things worked themselves out after my Dad passed away, and we got ready to move, but things didn't quite work out as we planned, and now he's still there, and his two older kids will be going to college soon, so he's missing out on lots of valuable time. He comes in on most weekends, but that time flies. We also have a ten year old daughter, who misses him alot. I know I should look on the bright side of things, like there are lots of Dad's who commute, and I need to make the best of it. I just feel bad for him being up there alone, dealing with news like he got today about his Mom. Anyway, I'm sorry for going on and on here, so thanks again for the advice! I really want to get healthy for my kids, and this board helps so much! His Mom actually died of cirrohsis, and she never drank at all, so it's something that can happen I guess from any kind of assult to the liver, and I worry about fatty liver getting to that point. But, from what I'm learning from you and others is that it's very manageable, and it just takes a change in lifestyle, which I'm struggling with right now! Thanks for explaining that Cape May thing, I had a feeling it was an East Coast thing! So, you like it up there, right? We actually looked a bit on the internet about NJ, and ther is more affordable housing there, but the commute to Connecticut is bad, I think. Well, sorry again for rambling on, good luck to you also!! Thanks again! Val
