My 3 daughters have been using flat irons for years. They use them in conjunction w/ products by Biosilk. This was recommended by several hairdressers and beauty salons. The products coat the hair to prevent scorching and make it very silky and smooth. I believe the products have silicone in them. My girls regularly condition their hair and get the ends cut every few months. The before and after results of the flat iron and Biosilk products are truly amazing. You would never know its the same hair after using the iron and Biosilk. They straighten their hair on an average of 3 x week, sometimes less, sometimes more. May not be the greatest thing for your hair, but I have not seen any noticable difference for the worse even after several years of use. Just be sure to condition your hair regularly, use something to coat the hair either before or while straightening it and get regular trims. Your hair will look great and you will be happy!
