I just bought a steam hair straightening iron and liked the results when I tried it.
I have very fine, thin hair, so I would say it's on the delicate side. I use a conditioner, of course, will help regarding heat-styling. But I just want to be very careful before I get into trouble.
How often can I use this thing safely, and not hurt my hair? Any suggestions?

Good question. I hope someone answers because I have been wondering this myself!

Just as my opinion, I don't think they are the GREATEST for your hair, but if you limit how much you use it.. you won't be doing major amounts of damage. So, probably at MOST twice a week. And heat, even through steam can cause you to get split ends, but so can brushes.. right? Just don't use it everyday, and I would think you would be fine.

I would suggest using Paul Mitchell Seal & Shine, which is a very lightweight spray that protects your hair from heat damage. My hair is also very fine, and I've been straightening it for about 11 years. I use a flat iron and large barrel curling iron about 3-4 times/week. Deep conditioning treatments once a week and the right products have kept my hair in great condition despite the way I abuse it. ;)

Okay. Thanks, everyone.
I'll definitely look into that Paul Mitchell stuff. I've heard that's very good.

In my experience if you spend a bit more and buy a ceramic flat iron, instead of a less expensive metal one, you'll be saving your hair. They don't get near as hot, and they're much better for your hair.

All styling tools damage the hair to some extent. Flat irons are no different. I love the way my hair looks when I use one, but my hair would be a mess if I used it every day. I limit it to only on the weekends and wear my hair curly during the week. It has kept my hair really healthy and shiny.

Kat is right, ceramic irons are easier on your hair.
i think how often you can use the iron depends on the condition of your hair to begin with.
my hair is fine, and it's been colored and over 75% highlighted with bleach. still my hair can withhold straightening as often as i like. lucky me http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif

i've been using a metal flat iron for 7 years now, you think it would be worth it to switch to a ceramic one now?
