43. Hadnt had a pap in over 20 years. Yes, kick me now...

Had the pap (fighting mad too).....it came back as HSIL.
Did the copl. The results corresponded with the pap as HSIL.
Or, guess you can say my diagnosis is dysplasia.
Doctor did cold knife cone. Jeez louise why do they make these things sound like theyre nothing? They take you in, knock you out, and send you home..
sick, confused and bleeding, I've never seen such. I was sick for a week.

Im waiting now for the pathology of the cone.
My follow up is Thursday.

What is scaring me is, my gyn says that I DONT have cancer...
I know that its PRE cancerous cells....I know that...
But, I keep reading these things on the net that say sometimes the reports come back and you do have cancer. My gyn says the worse case scenario would be in situ, which I know is confined to the cervix, and if I HAD to have one I guess I'd pick that one. He said he would treat that with a hysterectomy....(where do I sign up I said? Take it out take it ALL out)

I'm just wondering do these things come back and say you have invasive cancer or would that have already been determined? I just dont want to be surprised and freak out.....
I had a ct scan with contrast right before the pap and all my pelvic, bladder,
abdominals, chest and lungs were fine....

He keeps telling me to calm down that the cone may have been enough to successfully treat it (the dysplasia).

Can someone please help me get some better understanding.
I guess I'm looking for reassurance?
Do I listen to my gyn and chill out?

Please help me.

God Bless.

I forgot to add that while doing the colp, he did the endocervical scraping which came back as benign.

Hi there, I cant give you a definite answer because there are always exceptions and cases that dont fit in with what the medical literature says. However, it is my impression that according to medicine, it is rather unlikely that they would find you have invasive cancer. I had the same diagnosis as you (hsil, i had a leep), and i was worried about the exact same thing, them finding that all of a sudden i have invasive cancer, because i had kept reading things online too and that the pap is not always a very precise diagnostic tool. This is true, for instance my pap showed LSIL and then my colp showed HSIL. But those are both still in the frame of pre-cancerous cells. Also, your colp confirmed what your pap said, and the colp is a more precise diagnostic tool than the pap. My doc explained to me when she did the colp that they do it to diagnose you in further detail, so my impression is that the colp would have picked up signs of invasive cancer. Finally, it is also my impression that they would have seen something had there been full blown cancer when they did the cold knife on you. The doctor said worst case it could come out as carcinoma-in-situ, which i think sounds much more reasonable. Carcinoma-in-situ (CIS) is NOT cancer, it is very confusing but it is still classified as pre-cancerous, its the "worst" and most developped stage before actual cancer. It is localized only to the cercix, and the good news is that if something is caught when its at the CIS stage, it is very very treatable. Like i said, there are always cases were unfortunately things dont go according to what medicine tells us, but in my opinion, i would relax a bit. I know its hard because i was stressed out of my mind, but keep your spirits up. Its a good thing you caught this, and please please please keep all your follow up paps! dysplasia can be removed very successfully but i can come back, so its important to keep monitoring this the rest of your life so that if it comes back, you can catch it while its still pre-cancerous and remove the bad cells again. Also, if youre a smoker, quit, and eat a healthy diet with a folic acid supplement. Good luck, i wish you the best! Alex

Ah, thanks alex. Just hearing someone kind of confirm what I feel, makes me feel better...Thanks so much for answering, I appreciate it.
Yes, my pap showed HSIL, the colp he did, he said confirmed the diagnosis,
and that one especially good thing was that my endo scrape was benign...
He told me at this time there was no reason to do a hysterectomy, since in his opinion, that the cone will most likely rid the cervix of the precancerous cells, and that we would most likely go from there with a pap every three monthes, then graduate to 6 monthes then back yearly....I'm certainly praying that this what the outcome is....I will know Thursday, when I go for my two week followup....he did say to me, before the cone, that the WORST case scenario would be in carcinoma in situ and if that were the case that since I've had all my kids and I"m 43 that he would just do a hysterectomy and take care of that....so, I guess I really was just trying to second guess him, or maybe dwell on really negative things....
So, heres hoping the cone got rid of the cells, and that the margins are clear and I can go on and get on with my life and cut down on the worry...
Its just that sometimes reading on the net, you get the worst case scenario, and also, seems every horrible disease you find, you have symptoms of it... Well seems that way to me... ;)

Thanks for your post, I guess I was really just reaching out for someone to reassure, and you did that.

God bless you and I pray that all goes well with you.
I'll be sure and post what my gyno says on Thursday.

Thanks!

I seriously doubt it's cancer! I have had this done and they can usually look at it and tell if it's cancerous. Worse case you'll have a hysterectomy, which you want so I wouldn't be stressed over it!
