View Full Version : Wisdom Tooth Removed - Pregnant, Please Help

Hello,

I found out this weekend that I'm 4 weeks pregnant. I got a postive pregnancy test yesterday. This morning I had to go to an oral surgeon due to a horrible wisdom tooth pain I was experiencing. The oral surgeon said that the tooth was badly infected and should be removed. I told him I was pregnant and asked if it would be a risk to the baby. He said it's minimal but that they typically like to wait to do stuff like this until the second trimester. Due to the amount of pain I was in, he said it should really come out though. They froze my gum and pulled the tooth out. I'm sore but not too bad right now. My main worry is does anyone know what the odds are of the freezing hurting my baby? Or the whole experience of having the tooth pulled? I'm worried now and need to know if I should be. :(

Thank you.

Kim

The risks are much lower by having the tooth removed than by having an infection in your mouth. You did the right thing by going ahead. The ongoing infection poses more of a risk, as does any medication you may be on for it. Nocacaine is quite safe and has a very short disapation time, so your baby is really at no risk. It is amazing how protected a baby is inside the uterus - it would take a lot to be an issue. Don't worry, you and your baby will be just fine.

I'm sure the novacaine will have no effect at all on the baby...When I was pregnant, I had to have my appendix out (as it was ready to rupture)..I had general anesthesia, plus injections of Demerol after for pain, and then Perocets for pain, and my son was just fine....So don't worry..

Thank you so much for your replies. I feel a lot better. :) I'm taking extra strength tylenol for the pain. Two every 4 hours. My mouth is sore but not as bad as it was with the infected tooth. I'm trying very hard to make sure I don't get any further infection or have any other problems. Everyone's replies made me feel so much better. Especially your message Nance77. Thank you *SO* much. Your storey makes my mind rest easier :)
