I had protruding disk removed august 2003 after 4 months rehab involving PT and many stretches and exercises i returned to work as a painter (gradually) and was doing ok. june 2004 intense pain returned more MRI scans revealed another protrusion surgeon gave me the choice try and deal with pain or another operation i just cant bear the pain and uncertainy so i will have operation again if any one has had similar circumstances please let me know how you pulled through second time round.

Gordy,
I am in the same situation as you are. I had a discectomy/laminectomy in March 2004, and 3 weeks later got in a car accident. Boom, the pain I had before surgery came back. I had another MRI, several different opinions, and the consensus now is I need a fusion. I know how you must feel, it's a frustrating feeling to have made progress and be feeling better only to have it all come rushing back.
When is your surgery scheduled for? Are you going to have another discectomy? If there's any way you can avoid a fusion, that's what I would do. I tried and tried and tried, but my discs are so far gone and my spine is so unstable there's just no other option. I have talked to several people who have had the discectomy the 2nd time around also, and have had great results with it. Good luck, and keep us posted! We're here if you have questions or just need to vent! :)
