I again am depending on true experience to help me through another back surgery.
I had a one level fusion oct 2003 from the back only. The cage shot out into spinal column it was removed dec 2003. Now I need a two level fusion. I have found a fantastic doctor who specializes in revision surgery. He has scheduled a two level fusion for nov 1. My question for those who have had this is I can remember the pain from just a back incision and now the plan is to cut through the front add cadaver bone then flip me shave both hips for bone grafts and remove current rods and extend the fusion. I am wondering how in the Heck I will find myself able to get up the next day. Or even how will I lay. The first time I could lay on my side for some relief. This time the hips will both be sore.
I would appreciate any ones experiences to help me understand more fully what to expect.

Thanks in advance for helping
Lisa

Hi

Im very interested in your story THE CAGES SLIPED OUT

I'm having 360 all from the back late OCt , with whats called B TWIN Cages and screws on L5 s1

My doctor said this is the best way rather than just doing a half fusion ie just from the front or back

In My case the whole disk will be removed and the cages go in thought the back , these type of cages are smaler and are able to open up and push forward ( im told ) disotech is the name of the company I think

But any way on to you .

Tell me how did your cages slip ?

The night of surgery the nurse on duty had me pulling on the trapeze bar to roll over. On the third time I screamed and said my back split open. They checked and the incision was fine. The pain became intolerable and at my six week check up they found the cage resting on the spinal column by the nerve root. The second nurse on duty yelled at me when I started to use the bar and said a back surgery patient can never pull with that. This is how they think it happened.
However the doctor had started using a new cage that was supposed to be better but the old ones had teeth on each edge to cut into the bone and hold it. This was smooth on both edges. He said he would never use it again . They shouldnt move no matter what. I have done some research about fusions where they install cages from the back and there have been a number of cases of what they call retropulsion. Cages in my opinion should only be put in through the front.
Hope this helps and I wish you luck

My 4-level fusion was only posterior but it was done with BMP---no hip graft.
