My older sister and I were talking one day when she was over, and she told me that she has extra bone in the lower part of her mouth. She showed me and it looks weird. It looks like an extra row of bone that runs from one end of her bottom gums to the other, behind her regular gums.Very big. Her dentist told her that it is common, but hers is bigger than any he has ever seen.Has anyone ever heard of this??Is there a term for it?

I think it is called TORI. Sometimes it needs to be ground away for certain dental procedures such as fitting dentures. Is she having a problem that has brought this to the attention of the dentist?

no, she isn't having problems with that area where the bone is.She doesn't complain about it bothering her in any way, it's just there. But she does have TMJ very bad, and she also grinds her teeth badly in her sleep. She wears some sort of guard to sleep at night for it.Her dentist told her that is why she has the excess bone tissue, because of all the teeth grinding she has done. I was just curious as to what it really was all about, it looks really strange. Thanks for the input.
