I also post over at the autism board. My son will be 2 this month. He going through evals and whatnot for autism and had some blood work that came back "off"

He was diagnosed today with: distal renal tubular acidosis

anyone have experience with this? What exactly are we looking at for him?

he goes in for a kidney ultrasound on Tuesday.

thanks
Sondra

Normally, if things are getting too acidic in the blood, the kidney will spit more acid in to the urine and you pee it out to get rid of it. Distal renal tubular acidosis is a condition where the kidney's acid transporters are messed up and acid is not able to enter your urine, and thus your blood stays acidic. There are three types of renal tubular acidosis, and two of them are distal (type I and type IV). Type 1 RTA is an acidosis associated with low blood potassium, and type IV RTA is an acidosis associated with high potassium.

Did they tell you which acidosis your son had?

Ahhh, so he has hypokalemic (low potassium) renal tubular acidosis. This can often be caused by medications. Which medication(s) is he on?

besides normal kid stuff...what kind of meds can cause this? THey are sending us to a geneticist and did some chromosomal bloodwork. We were also told that there is a chance that he could have a "syndrome"

there was no mention of it being caused from medicine.

any thoughts, ideas?
