Hi, I was curious if it was necessary to take a vitamin c supplement in addition to my multi which contains 100% vitamin c. I workout an hour a day 5x a week and eat about 2-3 sevings of fruit a day and only about 2 servings of veggies, sometimes 3. Thanks! :)

I think so. Have you been reading the thread "The great vitamin C debate!"? Some pros and cons of taking large doses of vitamin C are discussed in that thread.

Vitamin C is best taken with citric bioflavanoids....roughly half in strength.
So, I take a 500 mg. Vitamin C tablet that contains 250mg. of Citrus Bioflavanoid Complex which are super antioxidents. You can get them at any good health food store or online.
Actually I take 2 tabs a day for 1,000 mgs.
I also happen to take it in a sustained release form which keeps a reasonable balance of it in my system daily.
Drinking it in tea and a multi vitamin doesn't sound like you can be sure of getting consistency or a high enough dose.

Bioflavanoids are great to take, but no tablet is going to have much in it so you pay a lot for a little. Fresh fruits and vegetables have plenty of bioflavanoids so if you eat them you don't need to take them in a pill. So we take the C in supplements and eat the vegetables for the bioflavanoids (plus a little natural C).

Citrus bioflavanoids help the Vitamin C absorb better aside from it's antioxidant properties. 2,000-6,000 mgs. of the citrus bioflavanoids would be about right and eating alot of fruit and vegetables would of course help.
There are 2 problems...most people do not eat enough of those every single day and to get the best effects, it would require eating the rinds and skins of the fruits.
So, for myself, I am going to see if I can find a powdered form of the Citrus Bios and get more into my system then I am taking now. However it is important to maintain the ration between Vit. C and the Citrus bios as roughly half bios to Vitamin C. So if I take 2,000 mgs. of Vitamin C, I would need 1,000 of the bios to be balanced properly.

Thanks for your replies! I just purchased Twin Lab vitamins from whole foods, and the multi contains 250% of the daily value for vitamin C, which is 150 mg of absorbic acid. Plus, these vitamins have a higher percentage of the vitamin b's. I'm still considering a vitamin c supplement, but I also take cal mag, and I hate remembering to take 3 a day. I was using the 365 Whole Foods vitamins, but the vitamin content wasn't as significant as Twin Lab.

That is hardly enough to do you much good. At least consider 500 mgs. once a day minimally. You cannot imagine how good this vitamin is for your body....why not look up online the need for Vitamin C and the minimum daily requirement stuff either.

Try looking up vitamin C Cathcart for more information on what vitamin C can do for you.

Hey, Jess, don't stop drinking that Green Tea :) When it comes to antioxdiant properties it can be 25-100 times more potent than vit C or E.

I love green tea. In the winter time when it is cold, I drink sometimes 3 or 4 cups a day! I have been trying to replace it for my morning cup of Java, but I have to have just one cup of it... But green tea is good for the rest of the day. It is loaded with antioxidants!!

I know, I have to have my coffee in the am, I love it. So, during the day I try to drink my green tea, which is very good for you, like 2-3 cups a day. I noticed that I came down with strep throat (used to get it every year now only every 2 years since I eat healthier :p ) at the end of this summer when I didn't drink it for like 3 days. My body is now immuned to green tea, and now I'm afraid I'll get sick if I stop. But why stop?
