Hi! I hope someone can PLEASE help me. My hair color, is a light mousy brown and every time I color it there is way too much red tones- I can't stand it!
I was told in the past to use an "ash" color to combat this, but have done that several times and I am still getting alot of red.
I am at the point I wish I never ever colored my hair in the first place, because now every morning I am putting a rinse of dark brown over my red toned mop and I am miserable.
Does anyone know of anything I can use to get the redness out? Even temporarilly - and can someone please give me advise as to what I can do now. Was thinking about coloring it a light brown and then maybe doing a cap highlight? Is this too much to do to my hair at once? (My hair is just above my shoulders and kind of dry.)
Thank you,
Cathy

I also have a lot of red undertones in my hair, it can be the hardest color to combat. Ash based hair colors are not always the best. You might want to try one that is violet/blue based. It sounds funky but trust me, when done right it takes out a lot of the red.
As for the color and highlight all at once, especially on dry hair, you might want to do a deep condition first. You can do that at home by getting an "intensive" treatment conditioner... avoid hot oil treatments because not all the oil comes out and then it just looks greasy. You could also go to a salon for a condition, or if you're on a budget, beauty schools offer it for about $5-$10. This will also help your hair take the color more evenly. Leave the intensive conditioner on over night, or let it sit for at least ten minutes. You could also even let it sit, blow dry it partially and then rinse. Either way - good luck and consult a professional if you're still worried!

I am in the same boat as you....
I gave up coloring my hair on my own. I hated the red tones I would get!! I have it done professionally (much to my shagrin with the cost) but it's worth it! I would much rather have what I want, then what I would get if I did it myself.
I would recommend saving up some $$ and go see a professional. Tell them upfront you get the red tones and you do not want that. You'll be happy you did!!

i have been coloring my hair for years..having it done at a salon..different salons infact..and no matter who does it or what they use ..it has an reddish orange cast to it...so i am thinking there is no way to avoid it if you have red undertones in your hair
