With regards to taking magnesium for palpitations I have 3 questions, if anybody could help I would be very grateful:
1. Is it better to take a magnesium supplement on its own or in a compound say with calcium and zinc.
2. How long would it normally take for the magnesium to start having an effect.
3. What dosage of magnesium would be required to be taken daily.
Thanks in advance

Alistair,
I find almost any magnesium supplement is similar because virtiually all magnesium compounds are completely soluble, thus I take cheap cheap MgO.
I resist taking calcium with it (actually I don't take calcium) because there's a compound called dolomite which is insoluble (Dolomite Alps are made of this rock).
It is a chemical combination of calcium-magnesium carbonates which pass through the body virtually untouched. Chemistry being what it is, throw calcium, magnesium and carbonate ions into an acid pot like the stomach and you might wind up making dolomite...
NEVER buy an calcium compounds contain this calcium-magnesium compound, dolomite...waste of money.
To be sure of your absorption of the two minerals if you take them both, take then a half day apart. (And make sure the calcium is a fairly soluble one.)
If magnesium works for you you will notice dramatic results in a couple days.

I have SVT and have started taking magnesium only. I do not take calcium as it interacts with verapamil, which is the medication I am on for SVT. I still have flutters (feelings of rapid heart beats) but not as many as before magnesium. It has definitely helped me. Check out "The Magnesium Factor" by Mildred S. Seelig MD. You can get it online from Amazon.com. It is very informative and has helped me.

if you read "the magnesium factor" it tells you to take a 1:1 ration of magnesium to calcium or 2:3 and i think it says about 700 mg's per day is the highest you should go. when your body fills it's deficiency you will get diarrhea and in that case you need to cut down your dose. this is where i'm at and now that i've had to cut down on the magnesium i'm getting more pvc's. it was really helping though from what i could tell and seemed to take about two weeks to take effect but i've heard that for some people it helps immediately. anyway, can't hurt to try and you could always start at a low dose like 200 mg's and work your way up.
