View Full Version : Is this all an inner ear problem? Please help!

Bear with me here, I feel like I'm going crazy and at the end of my rope.

About 3 months ago I had two very intense vertigo attacks during which I had a loud ringing in one ear, was vomitted greatly, felt the room spin like crazy and couldn't stand up at all. For awhile afterwards, I'd have odd bouts of ear ringing, dizzines and smaller balance problems. Lately, I've had no dizziness or balance problems but have been getting headaches on the side of the head of my bad ear, as well as feeling a fullness or tension in my head, especially the sinus area. Also feel a pain in the area between my eye and ear. Sometimes a sensation in my face or pain in the my throat on the side of my bad ear that feels like being poked with a pencil.

I've been having been sleep problems for two months. It started out as being able to fall asleep easily but waking up immediately after 4-6 hours. Now, I seem only able to fall half asleep and do not seem to enter deep REM. I never have dreams, it seems. When I do awake fully from this half sleep, I feel weak and very ill, so much so that I feel like I want to vomit. (Though I never do.) For awhile, I would feel a wave of tingling come over my entire body just as I was set to drift off to sleep, then I would snap awake.

At first I only got those tingling sensations as I drifted off to sleep, but I've been noticing them come for very, very quick spans when I am awake, sometimes, though not as intense.

During the day i have begun to have headaches and odd sensations in my sinus area. When I have these sensations I'll often feel weak and sick to my stomach. I also feel tingling or pulsing sensations in different parts of my body at times that will last awhile. Sometimes light bothers me.

I had one very short seizure about six weeks ago.

Other things I've been feeling during the day:

No appetite at times, no taste for food or enjoyment of it. Get easily full. Food tasting funny sometimes. Still get hunger pains. Other days, everything fine.

Nauseaness and a very ill feeling that comes and goes.

Bouts of weakness and fatigue that come and go.

Lower back pain, some hip pain.

Feeling hot at times when I shouldn't. (No fever, though.) Feeling chills at other times. Mostly normal.

I've had blood work, urine tests, my heart checked, and a CAT scan in the past two months. All turned out just fine.

I have never had a sinus or ear x-ray or scan. Never had an MRI.

I have a neurologist apointment in two weeks. I'm really hoping he can help me. At times, I get so ill and weak that I feel as if I'm dying.

I wrote a lot, so thank you for readng this. Any thoughts, comments or ideas as to what the heck is going on are really appreciated.

Hi Toaster

..."have a neurologist apointment in two weeks"...

That another step in the right direction---in addition to the other steps/test---did you end up seeing an ENT Doc???---if so---were any tests done???

First part sounds inner ear---at first--then sort of heads off---toward a sinus problem---not sure about the last part of symptoms---however---if it is a vestibular injury---a lot of weird stuff can happen---since the vestibular system---is so tightly integrated---to the brain/sensing systems---hopefully---others will have some insight & comment---if they do.

Hi Toasterman,

Many of the symptoms you describe, I had or still have to some degree:

I'd have odd bouts of ear ringing, dizzines and smaller balance problems - YES

I've been having been sleep problems for two months - YUP (one year for me)

It started out as being able to fall asleep easily but waking up immediately after 4-6 hours - YES (still happening)

Now, I seem only able to fall half asleep and do not seem to enter deep REM - YES (last year)

When I do awake fully from this half sleep, I feel weak and very ill - YES (last year)

For awhile, I would feel a wave of tingling come over my entire body just as I was set to drift off to sleep, then I would snap awake - YES (last year)

Sometimes light bothers me - YES (last year)

No appetite at times, no taste for food or enjoyment of it - YES (sometimes)

Other days, everything fine - YES (most days now thank God)

Nauseaness and a very ill feeling that comes and goes - YUP (a little today again)

Bouts of weakness and fatigue that come and go - YUP (last year)

Lower back pain, some hip pain - YES but mainly neck pain for me.

Feeling hot at times when I shouldn't. (No fever, though.) Feeling chills at other times - had this too
Looks like pretty standard inner ear stuff to me but as Subs said perhaps you have some sinus stuff happening as well. What is your anxiety like with all of this? Anxiety (resulting from the inner ear disturbance), when acute and long lasting, could easily be responsible for many of the strange sensations (like tingling) you are feeling.

Hope you can see an ENT soon.....an ENG might shed some light on this for you. Check out the link in the Archive titled: Vestibular Testing

Best....Scott
