Hi Friends,
OK....here's the spill, I have been suffering from mood swings, hot flashes, shorter peroids, mid-cycle spotting, unable to sleep at night, head aches, major anxiety, urine leakage, dry skin. I am 44 and these symptoms have been off and on for a year now.
I had a full exam last week, I was placed on Buspar (2 weeks ago) for the anxiety and mood swings and that has helped.
Today, I get a call from my Doctor who states my blood work is perfect. "you are not pre-menopausal and your thyroid is fine...."
WHAT?!?
Why on earth do I feel like I do if I'm not pre-menopausal? Now I am scared too death, if all the symptoms I have are NOT signs of pre-menopausal, what on earth are they and what am I going to have to deal with when I DO HIT the level of pre-menopausal.
SCARED TOO DEATH! any advice or information about blood work, test, etc. is greatly-greatly appreciated!
Denise

Denise,
Please don't be scared! Being scare will only make you feel worse and have anxiety!! Been there, done that! I scared the jeebies out of myself! Save yourself a lot of worries and accept the fact that your symptoms are peri-meno. There are no tests that will diagnose you with peri-meno. There are tests for actual meno but that means you have to have no period for a yr.
I only had one period in 10 months, all blood work came back normal, had symptoms up the yin yang and my dr. said I was "possibly" going thru meno b/c I'm "at that age." Get the many books many of us have - start w/ "The Pause," "Before the Change". You will get a better understanding on what is going on with you and start taking measures to help and take care of yourself!
Please keep posting and let us know how you are feeling and progressing.
By the way, welcome!
Molly

Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!!!! I am so un-educated about this, I thought that when you are peri-meno that the blood work would show that you were in the early stages.
BUT! the blood work dosn't actually show that you're menopausal until you are without your peroid for a year or so.....
duhhhh! I am learning more and more thanks to these BB and great folks. :D
So I am NOT going nuts, I am not the only one on earth having these symptoms and even tho my blood work dosnt show "menopause" I can still be in the early stages!!!!
Thanks again!

Yep, you got it! Glad to be of some help, Denise. Hope you feel a better. took me a while before I accepted what I was going thru were peri-meno symptoms. Once you find out other women are thinking, feeling, and going thru practically the same thing you are, you know you're not imaging things and you do start to feel better about it all. You don't feel so alone. I know I came to this the realization that this whole menopause stuff is a lot tougher than I ever imagined. And, what amazes me is that are women expected to go thru our late 40's, 50's feeling this way??! Yikes!! What a way to spend supposingly the best years of our life! LOL! Anyway, find time and go thru some of the other postings on this meno board...you'll probably find a lot of your answers there.
Take care,
molly

Ditto everything that everyone else has said. That is really what is so fabulous about the internet and information sharing. We connect with people that are going thru the exact same thing and can compare notes. Sometimes we end up knowing more than the doctors. The doctors are not here getting info. They got it all out of books written 20 years ago.
Hopefully

Denise if I didn't know better I would have thought that I had written this post and forgotten about it :) I'm almost 43 and began having the symptoms you mentioned at about the age of 38. Like many other women here I went from dr. to dr. to dr...I had one test after another an everything came back fine. Which is good, but also not good when you are experiencing horrendous symptoms and the doctors are telling you that it's stress, depression or anxiety related. No, no, no...I was having the stress, depression, anxiety, panic attack, etc...because of the insomnia, incontenience, dry skin, weird dreams, dizziness, spacey feeling, chronic fatigue, weight gain, and the list can go on an on...
Praise God that I'm doing alot better an over time I hope to feel better than before I got on this wayward hormones merry-go-round.
The women at this site have been just a God send with so much love, support, knowledge, an although they are not doctors I've received some sound information here that was later confirmed by doctors. It's ashame that I've received more medical information from the internet than from the 20 plus doctors I've seen in the last 2 years. In all fairness I now have an awesome internal medicine doctor, also an endocrinologist who seem to remain current in their profession. They also still believe that their patients do have some idea as to what is going on with their body.
I think I've strayed off the topic :D
Hope you begin to feel better. Keep posting.

Do you live in a fairly large city with resources? I know that in my city there are doctors who are MD's/Gynos who also practice wholistic medicine and have totally different systems on reading hormone numbers. Most doctors have a specific set number range and if you fall within or without of it they can diagnose you, but that system is very misleading. There is a doctor here who is pretty known and he has delivered more babies to women who were told they could not have babies because of his more precise way of working with and helping his patients. Also he looks at hormone test results in a more precise way and can tell you exactly where you stand.
So I have little faith in tradition MD's/Gynos. I feel that they know very little about what you are going through and follow the standard format . Something to think about.

I can't think all of you enough for your kind support and great advice. It's a breath of fresh air just knowing that I'm not the only one going through these strange symptoms.
I live in a small town with very few doctors/ specialist. My Doctor is wonderful but only a family physican. She said that as things progress....(she's been there - done that and knows what I am ging through) she will refer me to a good Gyno.
Thanks again for all your help. I'd forgot in my initial post about the "weird dreams, foggy thoughts, forgetfulness, stress and weight gain" YIKES!!!!!!!! what a nightmare!

I hate to bring bad news to you guys but I'm sixty and worse off than I was at fifty.
I thought heavy bleeding was bad at 48? It was a Picnic; I know that now.
And they say vitamins help? I am a Testament to the Ineffectiveness of vitamins. You need prescription drugs. I take fish oil capsules, DHEA, Premarin,
cal/mag, aspirin, green tea pills for weight gain, progesterone cream WHEN I REMEMBER since my memory is gone and misc weird supplements.
I am still so irritable I'm surprised and disgusted with my loud, nasty comments. Why can't I be Quietly grouchy? Or loudly laughable?
The variety of hot flash meds is so frustrating. If you take enough of them it's dangerous. If you don't take enough you're a frigid monster. I tried a small amount of anti-depressant. I really liked them until The Day I wanted to get off them. Three days later I had a panic attack in my own living room.
I'm determined to work these Problems out somehow. I've had three doctors suggest a hysterectomy since age 28. I never succumbed to one.
And I think they had three different reasons which , after they were given to me, were shown to be inadequate reasons. Which makes me think they were attempting to scratch one of their M.D. buddies' backs by turning me into a guinea pig.
