Gees, I'm taking 20mg. of prednisone a day for polymyalgia rheumatica and today I've been having some familiar pain, like possible kidney stones. I just read that prednisone can cause kidney stones,OH NO,I have had three kidney stone attacks in the past, and I'm just can't stand the thought of another attack. I have a wonderful urologist, even makes sure I have his home phone number. He was going to do a procedure a couple of months ago,not sure what, but I got sick with polymyalgia,so I have not had it done, but the pain went away. When I've had the "real deal" kidney stone attack,it was rush to the ER. I guess I will have to wait and see what happens. So right now I'm taking pain killers and hope the pain does not get worse.

I too was on predisone for quite a while last year--for colitis---and also got kidney stones in April 2004. The dr. told me there is no correlation between the 2 and that the predisone did not cause the stones. He did say that being dehydrated, for even a day, can be enough to cause stones to form. The procedure, I would assume, the dr. was talking about is called a lipotripsy. Basically they get rid of the stones with sonic waves. I have had 2 done and they are quite harmless. Your back feels like it was punched, but that's about all. My stones, I asume, passed with little discomfort. Hope all works out for you.
