....spitting it out. This way maybe one could enjoy chocolate or whatever but not take in any calories?? You may say this is wasteful but what 'better good' does it do to swallow it?

I don't think this would work well. For a lot of people, the pleasure they get from food is the swallowing of it. Just having a taste and spitting it out would be hard to do, the taste is only half the fun.

Paul, I think that would be a good idea for an occassional goodie. Otherwise, I suppose it could (potentially) pose a problem for some. (Extremes, of course.) I have to laugh though, because I did something similar to your suggestion. When I was REALLY in "diet mode", on Atkins, I wouldn't dream of eating a piece of pizza. So, when plating some for my teens, I stood over the pizza box, mouth opened, and inhaled slowly so I could "taste" it. :p Heck, it worked! :jester:

Paul-
It is very logical when it comes to calories, but I would not consider this behavior (if you do chew & spit)...I really beleive this could lead to an eating disorder - I'm not joking, because I do suffer from an E.D....that is just "1" of the things I did, to keep calories low...forming habits like that, can lead to more restrictive means of holding back calories.
Be safe! :)

I agree. Because this is kind of gross, you wouldn't do it when other people are around, and I don't think being secretive about what you are eating (or spitting out) is healthy, and I don't see this secretive behavior leading to anything good.

Sorry but nobody has yet given a sensible reason not to chew and spit. People seem to just be making excuses (which is of course always part of the problem with overeating).
Of course I meant do this in private - and how ridiculous to say half the pleasure is in swallowing - if that were true we'd swallow all day with nothing in our mouths.

1) It's gross
2) It's wasteful

The digestive process begins the minute you stick something in your mouth. Even if you chew the food and spit it out, you're still going to consume some of the calories, fats, etc. In addition, this is one step away from a full-blown eating disorder. Not only that, it's gross.
Why not try a cutting down on your portions, eating better and exercising. There is NO magic trick or magic pill that will make you loose weight over night - It just doesn't happen that way. It is a life style change that take determination, dedication and time.

I also agree this could lead to an eating disorder like bulimia.
However, you can try it but it is hard to do and you are going to get some calories but definately alot less.
I wouldn't do it, I have before but not again.
I just cut back on my calories(alot)
Eat smaller portions (healthy)
So you won't feel deprived eat one thing you like daily and break it up into two pieces just make sure you pay attn. to the serving size and make it last you.
Eat slower and drink between bites, enjoy the food.
You can do it but I understand you wanting to chew and spit but really that is getting into another habit that isn't good either. So why not just replace your old habit with a new one. (healthy)
Try eating 6-8 times a day.. Look at servings. Not meals.
I like frozen grapes and taking small bites out of each grape. I put 1 cup in the baggy and then the freezer let them freeze and they are good.
Or frozen banana's they are wonderful. Put some chocolate sauce on it that is low in sugar and look at serving size and calories.
Write everything including drinks down with calorie intake and add them up daily. Set a limit for yourself be reasonable.
You can do it!!!

good luck,

Paul38,
I am so surprised at the amount of people who are telling you this is gross and an eating disorder!! They are wrong!!
I think you may have come up with a great idea!! If you have a craving for chips or something really bad, why not get the pleasure of the taste and the action of chewing but not all the calories and fat??? This is almost brilliant!!
What you said about swallowing is so true! If I could be happy swallowing nothing when I get a craving for ice cream, gee that would just be wonderful but it doesn't work that way, does it? :nono:
As for leading to an eating disorder...please!! Most people here in the obesity board have a problem with eating too much and are probably going to have to deal with the temtation of it all of their lives. An eating disorder is nothing I am going to have to worry about. Besides, people with eating disorders are usually a healthy weight but just 'think' they are fat. We really are!! Am I right????

And who cares if spitting out the food is gross?? Being fat is gross, too!!! I know, I am fat!! :bouncing:

Well Paul38, I just wanted make sure you know there is at least one person who doesn't reject your idea. If you try this, let me know how it works. I'll also let you know if it works for me.

Overeating is also an eating disorder, so don't think you are immune.

You are not gonna be satisfied with chewing something and then spitting it out. Eventually you'll want satisfaction and you'll end up swallowing. So then what's the next step? Purging.

I have a great idea. Why not ask your doctor if this is a good idea? If he/she says it's OK then by all means go for it. But I bet no one would ask their doctor if this is OK to do, cause deep in your hearts you know it's not.
