Ok everone. Let me start out by saying I am a HUGE baby. I had both of them done today and it wasn't NEAR as bad as I was fearing. Let me explain.
Prep: (I preped with Fleet Prep Kit #3) I ate oatmeal for breakfast and that's all for the rest of the day I had to drink tones of water and clear liquids, and I could have popcicles. I took the phosphosoda @ 4 and kept pooping all night (about every 15 minutes) This is the worst part I promise!!!
Day of: This morning I got up and couldn't drink anything. I was pretty hungry and pretty nervous. I went to the hospital at 8:30 (crying) and they put an IV in, took my vitals and talked to me about the procedure. This helped a lot I had a great set of nurses there. At 9:30 the doc. came in and told me it was time I started crying again and gave my husband a kiss. Then they wheeled me into the endoscopy room. These nurses were great too. I had one there who ONLY monitored ME, my berathing, oxygen level EVERYTHING that's all she did was make sure I was ok. They put you in what's called "conscious sedation" which means you don't remember a damn thing but you can talk to them while they're doing it. For me this is what made me the most nervous, the drugs and not being able to remember stuff. They put oxygen on me and told me to lie on my let side. Then they said ok we're going to give you the medicine, see you when you wake up and the next thing I know.... I'm farting in the nursed face LOL (they pumped a tiny bit of air in your intestine when they do the colonoscopy so I had gas. I woke up and got up put my clothes on and went home.
After: For about an hour I was in and out of remembering things. Hubby said I would ask him the same question 5 times. I got some food in my tummy and I felt a WHOLE lot better. I took a nice long nap on the way home and a nice nap when I got home. I woke up around 5 and hubby and I went to dinner. I feel FINE.
I made this into WAY more that it needs to be, it REALLY is quite simple and VERY safe. I know that nothing anyone could say would completely calm me down but really I hope this does help. I am really the biggest baby in the world and all my crying did today was give me a headache I wasn't necessary. I hope someone gets some good use out of this. If you want to ask me, please do.
Thanks.

 Thanks for the post on the procedure. I will have my colonoscopy on Oct. 5th. I am already freaking out, I dread it more than anything, well almost anything. The drugs are the part that scares me.
do you know what they gave you?
also where are you? (state)
I thought a lot about the gas thing, I will be soooooo embarrassed!! and I will probably laugh and it will make it funnier than it should be, oh my, how I dread this thing.
I am very sensitive to meds of any kind, had my gb out and only took ibuprophen for the pain. I think I am THE biggest wimp in the world.
anyway if you can give me details in a big way...lol
Thanks

You won't be that embarassed, you will soon find out that everyone else there is also being told to "let it rip." About every few minutes the nurse will stick her head in and tell you "Get rid of that air" and you will. Usually they use versed and demerol for these procedures. Versed puts you in that conscience sedation state and demerol is for pain.

Nothing to be embaressed about. If I could have "let er rip", I would have. Unfortunately, after my colonoscopy, I had a lot of cramping and it felt like I could let out a 10 minute fart (sorry for the blunt description) but it was like something was preventing me from letting "it" out. The good news is that 24 hours later, I was back to "normal". As for the EGD, I was spaced out for awhile but I could remember everything I said or did but I wouldn't have allowed me to do anything that required good response time (like driving), if you know what I mean. From reading everyone's experiences here and from talking to people I know personally who have had these procedures, I have concluded that everyone reacts differently but the good news is that the reactions are all non-life threatening (great news). I know there are people who aren't as lucky but these procedures can rule out so many things that I believe the reward outweighs the risk by far. I'm glad you made it through ok and I hope the results are just as good. Take care!

I was most scared of the meds too. I am a HUGE wimp. Seriously I cried and cried and cried then my husband would make me laugh and then I'd cry some more. All I did REALLY was give myself a headache. Liek everyone else said they give you meds to sedate you and then a little bit of beds to make you not remember sutff. You can tell them that you're sensitve to meds. The nurses will know what to do sweetie. That's the hardest part for me, to trust someone OTHER than myself. LOL. But they are professional, they do it ALL the time, they DO know what they're doing. As far as the gas I thought it was so funny (apparently) even though I can't remember. Make sure someone patient it with you b/c God bless my husband I asked him the same questions 25 times. LOL poor thing. I'm in Missouri. I also have had one done in Virginia and my parents said they did the SAME thing. This was a couple years ago.

Murry thanks so much, I think I needed to be reminded that these are pros that will be dealing with me. I know I should just relax. I hope by the time Oct 5th rolls around I'll be sick of worrying!!!
I am such a baby!!!!

Practice deep dreathing techniques. I have very bad anxiety and I do this to calm down.
Breath through your nose for 2 seconds (count one-one-thousnad.... and so on) and then out your nose for the count of 4 seconds. Try to breath with your belly instead of your chest. Out one hand on your tummy, just above your navel, and one on your chest. When you breath in, let it come from your belly let your tummy swell up as you breath in and lower as your breath out. And make you chest almost sit still. It's very natural and it helps to slow your breathing and get more oxygen into your body. Do that for a couple minutes. Think about going on vacation or something and just try to relax.
I couldn't sleep for the week before my endoscopy and let me tell you, I wish I would have. All I did was give myself bag under my eyes and dark circles. It did do a damn bit of good! All it did was increase my stomach symptoms more, I'd get more IBS, I'd get a bigger upset tummy. Stress causes a LOT of problems in your body. I hope you get to the hospital fine and you go through with it, please do, you NEED to find out what's wrong. you NEED to fix it. Like I said, they are PROS. They do it ALL the time. My nurse said they had 16 scheduled that day and I was the 5th (at 9:30am!!!) It's like driving a car to them or riding a bike. It's VERY rutine!

Thanks so much for the post, and the information. I just had two questions: Did the endoscopy make you gag? And did the medication upset your stomach? Those are my two biggest fears. I'd rather just be completely out than be aware.

Sweetie. This is what I remember. I was extyrememly nervous and I told the nurses that. They said "everything is going to be ok, we're giving you the medicine now." I held the other nurses hand..... ..... then I woke up to my husband's face in recovery. :) Couldn't rememver a thing. LOL. The only thing that I had was gas (farts and burps) but that's all. It's ok I promise. Seriously I'm positive I'm a bigger baby than you. I cried for a week straight. LOL

hey.. i usually post on the ibs board, but i come here frequently and check.... i have to say that the endoscopy did make me gag very bad... unfortunately they started the procedure a little bit too soon, for the first 5 seconds, i remember trying to puke that thing up, and it was the worst thing ever... but after those 5 seconds id on't remember anything, i had a lower sigmoid too or however you spell it.. this year i had a colonoscopy done... and like everyone says the prep is the worst part... however i did have a couple times where i woke up "when they were turning through the colon" and it did kinda hurt, well hurt real bad... they gave me more meds.. i was completely "normal" after the procedure, not tired, not out of it... in fact i was running up and down the stairs.. i do think that i needed some more meds, or i just didn't respond well to them during my colonoscopy.. everyone responds different... iv'e had that kind of sedation before.. and this time just wasn't right.. however, i'd do it again... its not as bad as i made it..

I already know I am going to have to get an endoscopy after my appointment with the gastroenterologist on oct 14th.
They said they will do the procedure there in the office which kind of makes me feel better. I would rather have it done in a doctors office than a hospital. Hospitals make me very nervous.
You don't remember them sticking the tube down your throat for the endoscopy? I am scared to death!
Will they let my husband come back with me? I don't want to do it alone
I am so serious I am VERY VERY SCARED!

Ok this is MY expierience. I was OUT I don't remember what happened after they said "ok we're gonna give you the medicine now" I think it's rare that they don't give you enough meds that you can remember. Most people I've talked to say they just fall asleep then wake up in recovery. That's what happened to me. They told my husband to go in the waiting room but then I started to cry and said "I REALLY need him back here with me" they said he could stay. He stayed the whole time, until they rolled me into the procedure room. Then I was out in a matter of a minute and woke up with him beside me. The nurses were great. Tell them how nervous you are and I'm SURE they'll be wonderful with you too, no worries!!!! :)

I had them both to and found they weren't near as bad as I imagine them to be, I liked the twilight sleep tho.

Fortunatly but unfortunatly at the same time they didn't figure anything out, for me! They're still testing me up and down. LOL. But a lot of the times they can figure out what's wrong with people. They said I have the makings of diverticulitis, but don't have it yet. But they can see if you have any ulcers, polyps, *gulp* cancer, diverticula, hiatle hernia (sp), any erosions in your esophegus. They can take biopsies which are very important and remove polyps being relatively safe. If you're having problems you really need to take this test. Like I've said over and over. I have EXTREME anxiety attacks. I'm working on that. But If I got through it I have no doubt in my mind anyone else can do it. I keep telling everyone all the worrying I did and all the sleepless nights leading up to the test was for nothing. For the colonoscopy the WORST thing is the prep, after that you'r home free you just take a nap. LOL. Just make sure you're near the potty when you do the prep. Good luck everyone. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
