Hi.. I recently got hit abit under the TMJ area.. It was swollen (5 Days), i heard a cracking sound (a week and a half but it was getting better every day until 1 and a half weeks), headache (abt 6 days) it was difficult to eat (a week and abt 2 days). I went to the doctor 3 days after this happened and he checked jaw and he didn't think it was broken or anything and he let me take an x-ray off it. I went to take a x-ray and on the results it said that it viewed the normal routine views of the Mandible as well as an OPG study of the mandible. No fracture was found but the dentition on the OPG study shows impacted lower third molars on both sides. No other abnormalities are identified. Thats wat it said for the xray. When the doctor saw this, he said it was probably cracking because it was bruised. Will i be getting TMJ in the future? What are the chances? thanks

I dunno, did you see a doctor or a dentist? Does impacted mean they can't come through the gum, like they haven't come in yet? I would want to see a dentist who could check out more of what is going on. I haven't heard of using x-ray and OPG for TMJ probs, usually they do tomograms or MRI to make sure the discs are in place and everything. It sounds like you could have TMJ or develop it later on, I'm glad this episode cleared up quickly for you.

Thanks for replying. I went to the doctor. Impacted means that something come in contact with lower third molars (Fist). This TMJ, If my disc hasn't moved yet, must it have moved in order for me to have TMJ? Could i have got hit there where the 3 molars are and not get TMJ? What would have caused the cracking sounds which dissapeared at 2 weeks max? thanks

No the disc don't always move, I bet half the people here don't have disc problems yet have TMJ. In the beginning, TMJ symptoms come and go. I don't know about the impact. Knowing what I've gleaned from the boards and dentists, if I had gotten hit and had cracking and difficulty eating, even if it were just temporary, I think I would ask my dentist if he knew someone who did TMJ work and get it checked out just to be on the safe side. It doesn't have to be a specialist, it could be a dentist who does TMJ work. Good luck!

Ye, If i went to take a MRI right, Would they be able to find out if i have TMJ or no. What would they look at.. Like if everything is in the same place or something. Anyways I'll go to the dentist or something. Thanks for the info. Ah But could i have got hit there and not get TMJ? Like not on the TMJ, Under it and not get it. thanks again, i think i should get this checked out.

No, they can't always tell from an MRI, but they can rule out the more serious causes of TMJ like joint deterioration and disc displacement, etc. I honestly don't know if you could get hit and not get it. If it were me, I would get it checked out, especially since you had some trouble and the molars are impacted, you obviously suffered some trauma and it changed your bite. That can't be a good thing.

I am going to get it checked out but the doctor said everything was going to be better.. he said it was only bruised and thats what caused it to be swollen, made that popping sound etc.. Im confused now but ill go to a dentist.. I have to make an appointment. Thanks for the info.

Ye.. Damn.. How will i know if i have TMJ then? My mate says i don't have it because i didn't get hi in the joint but i've had symptoms for TMJ for 2 weeks max and that was about it. The doctor told me it the cracking sounds and everything was due the bruising and that once it all heels, it should be all good.I didn't take it specificaly for TMJ. Hm, So is everyone MRI scan wrong for TMJ or what? Is it possible for me not to have TMJ even with these symptoms? Like what else could it be? Could just the swelling cause it?
Thanks for the help
Thanks for the help

I have TMJ but isn't muscular, not joint or disc related, so my MRI didn't show a thing. It just ruled out the more serious problems. The ENT, neuro and dentist could all tell by palpating the joint and listening to it that it was TMJ, although what they were looking for specifically, I really don't know. My neuro thought that I was like you and had been hit in the mouth, my jaw was so out of whack, but I hadn't been hit.

Ye.. My Doctor was touching it but he didn't mention anything about TMJ. Maybe my injuries weren't to serious for TMJ so he didn't bring it up. Would it be possible for me to not have TMJ even though i had cracking sounds? thanks
