Hi Everyone,I was gonna keep this under my hat, praying I guess that it was nothing and would resolve, but my 21 yr old daughter seems to be going down the same path as me with this cervical problem, but there is one differance,so here it goes, she has 2 kids one infant and a 3yr old, last week she mentioned that her neck hurt, and shoulder, well of course that got me asking and then instructing you know all the golden rules, no lifting ,or over head activities ect, then she called and said it seemed to be getting worse,so I told her, get into urgent care, get anti-inflamatories,and muscle relaxers, and call family doc and get appt, she did,and it is not helping, this wensday she see's family doc, anyway last night she came over, and she has that wounded animal look, as we all well know, neck all red from rubbing it, her older brother had her stand and he was rubbing shoulder ,back and neck area, and I noticed a swelling on left side, above left shoulder, toward back of neck,(its left side symptoms she has)but...I dont think I swelled as result of buldging discs, did any of you???I gave her my soft collar, she was hesitant about wearing it, but of course wrath of Mom won,she said it seemed to help, also told her to get into chropractor, she used to go alot, she is very tall 5"11 and thin, with very noticable spine,I think she can get in tomorrow morning, and hopefully he can help, plus with appt wensday,an MRI can be ordered,is there anything I am missing ?god forbidd she has to go through all this, they said I was to young.....crazy! What do you folks think about the swelling????Gee's Ok my daughter stopped by this evening, after she went back to urgent care, the pain has gotten worse, but of course the Doctor there really could not help her out, other then some pain meds, well I had her put on my spare hard collar, and I am not sure what to make of it, but her pain left, she wore it an hour, then took it off to test, and in about 5 min all the pain was back, she is now wearing it,I wonder is it a disc, muscle or what????Any opinions welcomed.Solar

I'm sorry to say that this type of disorder can very be passed on to your children. I'm 26 and am in the begining stages of digenerative disc disease.
My mother has had 2 cervical neck surgeries (fusions in 1992 and 2002). Other aunts and uncles also have similar issues. I was a picture of health, ran cross country in college, worked out, etc. Until about 2 years ago when I slipped a disc at the gym and got a full lumbar and cervical MRI which showed the rupture and the narrowing of some other discs.
I've since had surgery (Nov 03), and am going in for surgery this fro for sort of a repair from the previous surgery. Bottom line is, your daughter needs to go see a specialist. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THE CHIROPRATOR!! Most think the end all way to heal is to adjust you. I went to a chiro back in the day, never took x-rays...and prob made it worse in the long run. I've also heard of many similar horror stories. You should def see a Orthopedic surgeon, Neurologist or Neurosergon. Sounds like your daughter should get an MRI to get to the root of the problem. And, get second even third opinions.
The good news is, a disc may just be slightly buldged. I've spoken to people who have had successful treatment for buldges such as physical therapy, traction to relieve some preasure and manipulate the disc back into place.
I'll be glad to provide any info I can..seeing as your daughter quite young like me and understand how tough it is to deal with this possible type of injury.
