I dont have one, but most of my friends do. Some say they regret every agonizing minute of it. And others say they didn't feel a thing. I think it just depends on your threshold for pain =) I say go for it, how bad could it be ;)

It doesn't hurt that bad, it depends on the person. Also, get it because you want to, not because you see it as a "fad". Plus, keep in mind that navel piercings can take a year or more to heal. They also can migrate out the skin (they're one of the hardest piercings to heal).

Also summer is coming around, so if you want one, I would advice you to wait, or NOT go swimming. The best time to get a navel piercing is after the summer season and such.

Got mine naval done almost 5 years ago, didn't hurt me at all. Just a small pinch, only a few seconds. When I say it doesn't hurt, trust me...it doesn't. I HATE HATE HATE needles, but I'm not kidding...my freaking ears felt worse than my naval. It's no biggie. Just make sure if you get it done that you take good care of it. Every once in a great while, mine still gets irritated and a little icky.

I got my navel pierced in July at a professional piercing place, it's pierced with a ring and it healed fine. My problem is I can't get the ring out. I turn the ball so much but it never unscrews or it doesn't look like it is. Am I turning it the wrong way or something? Thanks.

GinuwinesHotGurl4Eva,

I've only changed mine twice...the whole time I've had it (I just like my silver hoop, always a classic). The times I've changed it though, I had them do it for me because the same thing was happening to mine. I'm sure you can go there and they'll do it for you and I'm sure they'd be happy to show you how you can do it yourself.

The ball in the ring actually doesn't "screw" in. You just have to pry the ring away from the ball. But again, the ball it self isn't screwed in at all. I had no problems a year ago when taking my out. If you are still having problems, go back to your piercer so they can pry it open for you.

To take out the ring, I used a small pliers (not as bad as it sounds!). Just hold the ring on one side of the little ball, and use the pliers on the other side to "open" the ring. You need to stretch the ring out to open it. The little ball doesn't really screw into anything, it's just there to hide the gap in the ring.

Yes that was my question. How bad does it hurt? Many people get that done that's why I'm asking.

I got mine pierced about 4 years ago, It did not even hurt at all. Just alittle uncomfortable for the first week. After the first week it was fine. I change mine all the time, depending on what I am wearing. My husband really likes it alot.

Come on guys, all piercings hurt... It is cutting your skin.

To answer the question, yes it hurts, but how bad depends on your threshold for pain. I had mine down about 8 years ago and it was a really sharp pain that lasted for only a few seconds. It hurt about the same as getting my ears pierced. I also have my tongue done and that was even less painful but it swole like crazy...

Someone asked about remving the ball of the hoop... It doesn't screw in the hoop, it (the ball) has two little holes on either end that the hoop connects to. Just try pulling the ball out. It kind of fits (by pressure) in between the two sides of the hoop if that makes any sense.

Yep, I'd say it depends on your threshold for pain.

I've had mine done 3 times. Why you ask?

The first time, (June 98) I went to a shop that wasn't exactly reputable, and they set the piercing too high (the bottom hole was almost above my belly button). The 2nd time (July 99) it got infected, then I lost the ball (it had a curved barbell in it) and it fell out.

The third time seems to be the charm! (April 01) I think it was due to these things:
Having it done with a captive bead ring (a "hoop" instead of a curve barbell). This I believe allowed it to heal better.
Using saline solution to clean the piercing instead of soap & water.
Not touching the piercing unless I was cleaning it.

When you first get it done and it starts to heal, you will probably be tempted to pick the crud off of it and bother it. DON'T! Absolutely do NOT touch it unless you are cleaning it.

As far as pain goes, the first time I had it done, it hurt less or equal to my ears being pierced. The second time it hurt a little more, and the third time, it hurt like h*ll (I think because they were going through all that scar tissue).

goth_vamp:
I had my nipple pierced a few years ago... it hurt like hell, and it was worth it for a while, but since then, it started rejecting and let me tell you -- that got really painful. (I ended up taking it out last year) That is the problem with surface piercings like the nipple or navel... your body really doesn't like having metal in it. For instance, people who get shot and are found to have no internal bleeding are usually just stabilized and sent home with the bullet in them. The bullet will work itself out of the body in many cases. Same thing works with piercings. The other thing that you should consider is who whole breastfeeding situation, if you want kids...do a little research before you get it done.

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle these 3 things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights.

IF you do get it done, make SURE that you keep it clean and dry. I tried swimming a couple weeks after I got mine, and ended up with a pus filled green mess! Disgusting. But other than that it healed fine. Do bear in mind that you will probably have a scar if you decide to take it out and let it heal.

It is just my opinion but I think pierced navals look cheap. Same goes for most other body piercing. The only one I like is pierced ears and that's because when you can wear beautiful earrings it enhances your looks. All the other piercings do either nothing or actually detract from a person's attractivness. But, as I said, that's just my opinion (which happens to be shared by a great many people).

I have had mine pierced for seven years now. It did not REALLY hurt to have it done. The guy said it would feel like a bee sting, and frankly, it did... for a second or two. My recovery was great. Not much soreness. Wash with antibacterial soap (not epson salt as some recommend, this is VERY drying), and spin the ring while washing to make sure the inside gets cleaned. You do not want an infection as this can lead to scarring and some VERY ugly bellies! I had mine done in late April and had no trouble with swimsuit season. It was the era of the abflex though, and that thing came nowhere near me for over a year! (For those that remember them, placement is right over the belly button)

So, now I'll tell you my problem with my belly button ring. I had a baby 14 months ago and my belly button looks shrivelled now and the outside of the hole is somewhat bigger - though I can't fit a bigger ring in. I kept my ring in throughout my pregnancy as my doctor told me the scar will get stretched either way and I might not have been able to get it back in if I took it out all nine months. My innie never turned into an outie, so this didn't look as funny as you might think. Anyway, just something to keep in mind.

One last thing, and I apologize for the long reply. If you want to change your ring with any frquency, I recommend purchasing a ring opener. It is kind of like a reverse pliers in that when you squeeze it, it opens instead of closes. I bought mine at hot topic for about ten bucks. Also, soap really helps the new ring slide in.

jenivey, My piercing did the same thing!! I had my first belly button ring 6 years ago and it was in for about 2 years, didn't have any trouble, looked great. Then I found out I was pregnant with my daughter (now 3) so when I was only a month and a half along I took it out. Looked kind of funny but after I had my daughter it looked even worse. I only gained 20 pounds and at my heaviest was 139 so I did not get big, but the hole is like caved in and the outside is all wrinkly looking (so gross!) so I went and had it done again last year to try and hide the wrinkly skin and it looked ok, but it definatly didn't look as good as when I first got it done. Then my dance instructor (i was learning the hustle) was trying to get me to do a flip and he put his arm on my stomach and flipped me over and it ripped a little and was bleeding. I took it as a sign and took the damn thing out!!!! My advice to anyone thinking about getting this done..DON"T DO IT!! It's not worth it, you might be a long way from thinking about having a baby but one day you probably will and it just looks ugly after. Besides they won't always be in style and one day you will take it out and you just won't be able to show off your nice stomach anymore, it will be scarred. OH by the way, It definatly hurts WAY worse the 2nd time!
