View Full Version : re-occuring cervical dysplasia?

Last Wednesday I had cryo-surgery for my moderal cervical dysplasia. Now I have to wait 4 months for my follow-up. Does anyone know what the chances, percentages that the abnormal cells will come back??? I've been planning on moving and going to school and I know when I switch insurance I won't be covered for 12 months for this pre-existing condition. So, if the cryo is pretty effective, then I think I'm going to go ahead and move and hold out for 12 months........... what are the chances?? and are the results of cryo adequate for the most part?

thank you tons!!

I'm concerned about that as well. I think it all depends on your immune system and if you’re a smoker. Everybody is different so it all depends on how you treat your body.

I had my cryo July 13. My Doc is having me back in 3 months. ( I had mild/moderate) I was told it had a cure rate of about 85%. I know 2 people who had it. One was cured in one treatment. The other took 2 treatments.

did the doctor just perform another cryo the second time?? I wonder if I go ahead and move if it is ok to wait and have the cryo until my insurance will cover it, meaning if my abnormal cells are still there? this is stressing me out and is really messing up my plans with school and moving. =(
I don't have the HPV virus, so what else could have caused the dysplasia?

thanks for the info! I really appreciate it.

Was your HPV test negative? My test came back negative, yet my biopsy said I had suggestive HPV. It is my impression if after my retest I still have the dysplasia I would immediately have the cryo again. No one can know for sure how quickly this can progress and I wouldn't take any chances.

Hello there, I am currently going through the same problem with insurances. I had LEEP back in Febuary and just moved to Kansas from NY. I just got word today that my insurance company will not cover anything cervical for 1 year. It's a tough decision. Like it was said before, the cure rate for LEEP is about 85%. But this does not refer to the chances of it coming or not coming back, this is the success rate for getting out the dysplasia that is there at the moment. There are really no stats on the chances of dysplasia coming back. I 've asked my doc about that a lot because i'm very worried about reccurrence too, and she said only that it depends on a few things: if you have HPV, your chances are higher for reccurence. But it also depends a lot on the health of your immune system in fighting the HPV. Eat very healthily, take a folic acid supplement and vitamins, and stop smoking. These steps will strengten your body and help fight reccurence. The only stats my doc had is that chance of reccurrence is said to be greater in the first 2 years after a proceedure, but it really really depends on your body, your health, and sometimes, just chance. Since i already had moved, i am taking my chances and switching to my new insurance right away, and just hoping that i wont need any proceedures in the next year. While im not covered, im gonna go have my 3 month check up paps at my local health clinic, its much cheaper than going to a gyno. But i would not wait until i am covered if i need something done this year, that is too great a risk to take. If this happens, i would just go ahead and have whatever needs to be done, even if it means really tghtening up financially or even taking out a loan or whatever. Health is most important! Good luck to you!
Alex :)

I'm in the same situation as you, I know you read the long version on the insurance stuff board...
Are you on depo-provera(or some other hormonal bc)? For a long time? I have been on depo for over 6 years and think that might be what caused the dysplasia.

Alex~ thanks for your story! ;)
I'm desperately scared that it will come back. I don't know why this freaks me out so much, but it does. And, yes, it's a chance we take when we move or switch insurance. But at least my new insurance will start to cover it after one year and I'm not denied all together. I'm going to check into the health clinics in my new state as soon as I move just in case I need to go through the cryo procedure again or what not.

Good luck to you!!
oh and what would be the best folic acid supplement for me to take?? any suggestions?

thanks again!

Yes, I've been on birth control for a little over 4 years. I heard that it could be a possible factor to dysplasia. Perhaps I should finish my pack and turn to a different form of bc??

I don't see how BC could be a factor in causing the dypslaisa... If that were true a lot of females would be diagnosed with this.

I think they say BC and other methods for females can be a factor because when your on BC your less likely to use condoms when in a relationship, meaning one can catch a disease due to being on the pill. :nono:

well I was tested for HPV and my test came back negative........ so what else could it be?? my immune system? and the fact that I used to smoke?

I have severe dysplasia and I already went in for my second LEEP last May & I was tested negative (3 different test from 3 different doctors) for HPV also. I was told by my doctor that it could be smoking, genes, vitamin deficiencies, etc. (I'm all 3). I was on depo - only one shot though. BC pills don't cause dysplasia, but because they're hormone related, it really isn't a good idea to take them while you have dysplasia. After the 2nd LEEP, I still had some dysplasia in the upper part of my cervix and my gyn oncologist said that he'd pap me in November and move from there. I am taking 1,200 mcg of folic acid a day - is that too much? If not, does anyone know what the recommended amount is? I'm literally trying to dose myself up REALLY GOOD with folic acid (among other vitamins) so that when I go in Nov., I can only hope that it's regressed a little bit. Forget about insurance! No one will even touch me! PRAY FOR ME - I DON'T WANT CANCER. I just want one more child and then they can take my uterus & shove it! :D

KimRick... i'm definitely praying for you. please let me know how your next pap goes!

I go in for my first follow-up in mid-December. so do you suggest that I stop taking the pill right now? it's only been one week since I had the cryo-surgery. I'm only 24 and wish i could get a hysterectomy... children are not in my future and if so, I can always adopt or be the best Aunt in the world to my brothers' children.
I, too, would like to know how much folic acid, vitamin B as well as other vitamins I should take. What brand of vitamins are you taking, if I may ask?

Good luck to you. you're in my thoughts.

Poor nutrition and being a smoker plays a part in dysplasia also. Even though HPV is the main cause it doesn’t mean it's always the cause. Your Immune system helps fight off the HPV infection so maybe that's why you tested negative although I'm not a doctor so I really don't know. Just putting my two cents in the matter. I also hear that if the HPV virus is in it's sleeping state it won't show up on a test... Or am I wrong on this? Anybody??

I take 500 MG of folic acid. I read that that is eough but if you are pregnant you should take twice the amount. I've only been diagnosed with Mild dysplasia and when they did the colop last year that didn't find anything or mild dyplasia. I go in for my second colop next week.. Pray for me!!

Hi, the folic acid i am taking is the GNC store one, as are all my vitamins, but I think any brand would be good. The main thing is, make sure you get a natural one. I'm not exactly sure what it means but i would assume it means its all drawn from natural sources, but in any case, my doc just said that any natural vitamins are better because they get absorbed better. It should say on the box "natural" or from vegetable sources or something of the sort. The doses i am taking are as follows, and i found these in a health book: folic acid (400 micrograms), beta carotene (50 000 IU), vitamin E (100 IU), vitamin C (500 miligrams).
Good luck, God bless,
Alex :)

I wouldn't stop taking your bc pills just yet. Talk to your dr about it and see what he/she says. I have 2 reasons to stop mine - 1.) the hormonal side effects 2.) mine are causing me to have cervical erosion (which is a MAJOR pain in the a$$! I would really like to get my hormone levels checked; I have a funny feeling that my hormones are out of whack.

What about taking the ortho-lo? I've been thinking about getting on that... Besides since I've been off the depo shot I havn't had a period and I need to get regular again.

That's what I'm taking. I had one depo shot and HATED the side effects. I never went back for another shot and I didn't have a period for a year!!! Ever since I had my daughter 8 years ago, my hormones have been f'ed up. Before I had my daighter my periods used to come on the same day of every month, last 3-4 days, no cramping or pain - like clockwork. Then I had my daughter and had the depo shot within the first year of having her and it screwed everything up. The only problem is that I don't have insurance and I'm sure blood work is going to cost both arms and legs.

Yeah I think the Depo shot really messes up a woman's cycle once there off of it. It takes 18-months for it to fully get out of your system.

My doctor told me that even if I get on BC my periods probably won't come because it will come when it's ready. WRONG! I went on BC last month and my period came back but I stopped takin' them because I want the kind with the low hormones affects.

What I'm thinking is if my hormones aren't screwed up in the first place, then it's the bc pills that are screwing them up - does that make sense?
