Can anyone tell me what is the best type of foundation to use on oily skin? Liquid, powder, stick... there are so many different types!
I know foundations have been discussed here already, but mostly where people are asking for a specific brand name. I'd like to know what type is best in general. Of course, if there's a specific brand that you feel outperforms the others, feel free to mention it!
Thanks!

Hmmm, that's kind of hard without actually seeing your skin. What's more important than anything is making sure it matches your skin tone. If you find a foundation seems to disappear into your skin, you've found the right color. Remember too, most women think their skin is lighter than what it actually is. I've had women who were using ivory for years and couldn't understand why they could never look natural. I'd switch them to a beige shade and they look beautiful.
You might want to try an oil-free make-up but this will still appear a little shiny after it's been on your skin for awhile, so using a transparent powder over it to set it would work just fine. And the price doesn't necessarily guarantee flawlessness. I've used some of the least expensive makeup and it looks beautiful; it all depends on how it's applied. Use a sponge instead of your fingers and it will give you a sheer look instead of a made-up look, and it's much easier to get it on evenly. Never put it on your neck. If you find you have to put makeup on your neck to blend it with your face, you're using the wrong color. If you use the correct color, it will match your neck just fine.....and also save the collars of your clothes.
If I had to pick a brand, I'd go with Revlon as so many dermatologists also recommend. It's not terribly expensive, you can find it at any drugstore, and the consistency is wonderful. I myself have used it for years and I can't count the number of compliments I get on my skin. I've even had people think I had no foundation on at all, that this was my own skin. Which is one of the nicest compliments any woman can receive. They offer an oil-free type which is nice, then simply pat transparent powder over it to set it. Just be sure you match your face color as close as possible. I have found that, unless you are truly very very pale, or very very dark skinned, if you eliminate all the ivories and all the dark beige's and concentrate on the colors in-between, that helps. Most women can safely wear the 'flesh-tone' colors or those with a hint of yellow, and look very nice.
Hope this helps, good luck.......

You sound knowledgeable in the makeup world, how can you tell if you have the cool tone or the yellow tone to your skin?

If you're rosy, you're probably cool. If you are olive, then warm.

Honestly, I've never really gone down one road or the other based solely on someone's coloring. You can have two people with the same exact coloring, and they'll both look different in the same make-up. I have a friend who is very pale, naturally blonde, with big blue eyes. She wears a beige foundation believe it or not, which I suppose you would consider'warm', and she looks lovely. I have seen blondes - and I'm talking natural blondes - who wear ivory, who wear beige, who wear brown shadow, grey shadow, lavender shadow, etc, and they all look wonderful. On the other hand, I've seen brunettes with pale skin, some with darker skin, etc. So it really depends on your specific coloring to decide what looks good on you. Personally, I have found that the warm colors work best on most everyone.

You mentioned Revlon...which line of foundation in particular? I used to love this foundation that Max Factor made some years ago. It was called "colour and light" and it would make my pores disappear! It was the best stuff! Unfortunately, they don't make it anymore.

It's called 'New Complexion Oil-Free'. It has an SPF in it, and I always use a make-up sponge when applying as it's very hard to get even coverage with fingers. It also goes on a little more sheer with a sponge, which is a look I prefer. It's much easier to add more if you need it then to try and remove what's already there. I have tried the more expensive make-ups and while they were very nice, they really weren't any better than the drugstore brands. Again, it's all in the application. You can have a $50 bottle of foundation, but if it isn't applied well and looks thick and cakey when on, it isn't going to look good no matter how much it cost. So I have found that while the more expensive make-ups are good, they aren't 'better' than the less expensive, and most women will be more than happy to spend $12 on a bottle of make-up as opposed to $50.
I remember awhile back Christie Brinkley was make up in all Cover Girl make-up. You would never know it to look at her, and she did it to make a point - that even in Cover Girl you can look like a million bucks, if you know how to wear it. And then I have seen celebrities who had faces done in the elite of make-up, and looked awful. It all depends on what kind of image you want to project. Personally, I want people to look at me and think "My, she's really pretty", not "Wow, she's really got the make-up on".
See my point?

What about those "mineral" makeups? I usually see them on QVC or something and some of the people on this board really like them. I have never tried them but I am intrigued...
What do you think of the Revlon Skinlights??

I'm sorry, I don't know what 'mineral' make-up is. I don't watch QVC, but I have stopped at times when I've been going through the channels to watch something about make-up, and they'll usually have the woman responsible for creating it or selling it, and she'll be demonstrating it on the show, and she will usually have it on herself. And almost every time, I'll look at that person and think, if that's what you look like after putting it on, no thank-you. Now, this could have been what you're referring to but honestly, I don't know what it is, I usually stay with what I know.

Did you catch my edit in that previous post? About the Revlon Skinlights and what you think of it.

Well, it's probably very good, though I'm not familiar with it.
As far as Skinlights, I haven't used it but if it's by Revlon, it's probably good, too. They make several different types of foundation but I don't use them all.
What do you currently use?

And I still feel that women should not wear any foundation. If your complexion is nice, why would you want to cover it up with something? If your complexion is not so good then every foundation, no matter how nice and no matter how expertly applied, will make all the imperfections even more noticeable. And it looks so unnatural, like a mask. Even when people think their foundation is invisible, I can ALWAYS tell when someone has it on. If you do have blemishes on your skin, use a spot concealer, applied lightly, and leave the rest of the face alone.

I'm sorry Girlgirl, I wanted to ask how old you were, too. Your age will help in deciding which foundation would suit you better as some are formulated towards younger girls skin, whereas 'older' women prefer a little different texture. Fortunately, the younger you are, the more choices you have :)

I am 30 and I have oily skin. My pores around my nose are larger then the rest of my face. I have to disagree with rita, if foundation is put on right and with the right color, you can't see it. I know that my skin looks much better with a little bit of foundation then with no foundation. It really evens and smooths out my face.

I used to use this foundation by Lancome that's been since discontinued and you could not tell I was wearing foundation at all and with time it actually improved the condition of my skin... it acted as a sunscreen, moisturizer, foundation all in one. I actually had so many people tell me what beautiful skin I had even though I had large pores, acne scarring, blotchy redness, and freckles, but this stuff just smoothed it all out and made my skin look flawless, I could actually put a small amount on in the middle of my face and you could not tell with a magnifying glass where the makeup was and where it wasn't accept that my skin just looked better in that spot. I got spoiled by that stuff and expected all makeup to be that way... but since they've discontinued that stuff I've never found anything that comes anywhere close to that. I keep searching though....

Carroll,
That must have been a super foundation that you could not even tell with a magnifying glass that it was on your skin. You were lucky indeed to had found it and isn't it maddening when companies discontinue the very products you love best? Did you ever try contacting Lancome to find out if perhaps they still have some of it available? Who knows? You just might be lucky to find it available still. What was the name of the foundation and how long ago were you using it? I have had great success finding "unavailable" items for many of my friends (even now people ask me to help them find discontinued stuff) so if you give me some details on the foundation (and the shade you prefer)I may be able to help.

I have oil around my nose and I use Revlor colorstay natural makeup. I also put a tiny dab of Ultima 11 mattyfying gel on my nose. There is no oil throughout the day and my large pores vanish completly!!!

It was Maqui-Eclat natural finish treatment foundation in warm ivory, I think it was warm ivory? I tried contacting Lancome on several occasions and they were absolutely no help at all... they were so unhelpful as a matter of fact that now I refuse to shop Lancome, lol! I've had so many of my favorite things discontinued (like Dif-Rinse, that stuff was awesome!) and usually other companies are so helpful, but not Lancome! I did find out on my own that they still made it, or at least it's very similarly packaged and called by the same name, in some European countries and I even managed to find a place that would sell it to me... it was a British pharmacy... but they don't make it in my shade anymore I guess, because I got the lightest shade and it was still much too dark. It also didn't smell quite the same, so maybe there was something else they changed? Usually when a major line discontinues something they give you plenty of warning so you can stock up... but unfortunately they must've decided to discontinue this one right after I bought my last one because by the time I went to get another one and called around nobody had any left.
Anyways... that's what all foundations *should* do, imao. I'm always surprised how bad foundations are... maybe I just notice it more because I'm such a hard color to match being so pale? But still it seems like all the foundations I've tried either look totally fake and heavy or just accentuate flaws.

Hi Carroll - Did you ask if they made a new make-up that was meant to take the place of the one they discontinued? Many companies, when they choose to no longer make something, will 'replace' it with another similar product that is suppose to be 'better'. I suppose they have to do this and can't simply keep making the same make-up for years as ingredients change and become more improved. I'm just surprised at the lack of caring on their part, to the point where they lost an obviously very good customer. You could visit a make-up counter and ask for help, but be forewarned that whoever you ask will of course try to get you to buy whatever line they happen to be selling. A good way to get around this is to look at the ladies who are behind the counter. If they look very made-up, chances are you will too when they are finished. Try to find someone who not only has their make-up on in a way you prefer to wear it yourself, but who is close to you in age. She will understand your skin problems and what it is you're looking for in a make-up. Also, don't go to someone who doesn't have much make-up on, or is obviously not wearing foundation. I would have a hard time understanding how someone who doesn't like foundation or even wear it herself could possibly help me pick out something for myself :)
Keep looking and you'll eventually find something that you'll wonder how you ever lived without. Take care.

Carroll,
I have begun my search for your favorite foundation. You also mentioned Dif-Rinse. Is that product also made by Lancome and what is it (hair rinse?, facial toner?). Let me know. I might as well look for both at the same time. Also, I need to know approximately how long ago you purchased your last bottle of Maqui-Eclat and when you went back to buy more and found it discontinued. The time frame is very important.

I know what you mean. I have had Lancome discontinue
several things that I have liked including makeup base. Now I use Futurist by Estee Lauder. I love it. Thank goodness that Estee Lauder does not discontinue things like Lancome does.

Oh gosh, this was in 1992, I *think*, it's been so long! The really pathetic part is I actually saved my tube for years trying to squeeze out the last bits for special occasions, ha! And it never went bad either... a lot of foundation does go bad after a year or so. The Dif-Rinse was a "cold cream" made by Noxzema that was nongreasy and washed off with water... the people at Noxzema were always very nice and very helpful, btw.
Oh, and, cb50, I did keep asking about a substitute but they pretty much just got rid of that formula entirely and about all they could come up with was one type that was a "similar" color, and they discontinued that too, ack!
My trouble is most foundations are too dark... at this point I've tried most everything at department stores and they are all too dark for me, so maybe there is a foundation that works as well as the Lancome did, but they just don't make it in a pale enough shade. Prescriptives is the only one that has close shade for me, it's not bad but I *feel* like I'm wearing makeup so I don't wear it everyday. My skin does better when I wear foundation though, why, I don't know, but it does.

Hi Carroll - Well, I suppose you know your own skin better than anyone, and if you can't find any that are pale enough for you, you may be able to have something custom-blended for you. If they discontinued making this eleven years ago, then nobody's going to find it now. You may want to try custom make-ups if you truly can't find one light enough or one that you feel as good wearing. Have you thought of just wearing a powder?

Hi Carroll,
Thanks for the information about the discontinued products. I have tried searching for these but after you told me how long ago they became discontinued, I realized that the search would most likely be futile. That is exactly why I mentioned about the time frame being very important. After being no longer on the market for over a decade, it would be highly unlikely that any company or any individual would still have it in their possession. That's too bad.

I use the Revlon Colorstay Stay Natural as well, per Courtney's suggestion, since she also lives in Vegas. :) I LOVE IT! I have oily skin, and I just use a little of it and rub it in really well. It looks completely natural and I don't even have to use powder with it and it looks perfect for HOURS! Thanks for the recommendation, Courtney! It was from a post a few weeks ago someplace on this board. LOL! :)

I also like the Revlon Colorstay Natural foundation. Easy to apply (unlike the old formulation).
Another one that I just tried was Cover Girl's Aquasmooth foundation. This is great!! You can use as much or as little to get the coverage you want and it really did keep my skin shine-free. Did use a bit of powder over top (Maybelline's Shine-Free) but I use it over all my foundations. Had so many compliments on how flawless my skin looked.
Has anyone else tried this?
