Hi,
I hope your having a good day, Our syptoms kinda sound alike, I was wondering what came first, Your inner ear disorder or your stomach problem. I have an inner ear problem and didnt start getting stomach problems untill my ears started up and I got really dizzy. Do you think our problems could be anxiety, I was thinking they might. Not the dizziness the stomach issues. I am scheduled for an ultra sound this thursday, I like you chickened out of the upper G I because I have a very big fear like you of throwing up. Hopefully the ultra sound gives me results, Hope everything goes well during your endo.
Thanks

Hi there. I noticed that too, that our symptoms seem alike. What you have is the closest description I have read yet to my own symptoms. It is amazing how alike actually. Well, the first symptoms I ever had from my stomach came about 3 years ago. It started as just a minor problem: I couldn't go to bed after eating or else I would wake up nauseous. As long as I waited at least three hours I was safe. THEN last September (2003) was when my inner ear problem started. It wasn't long after the dizziness started that my stomach problems got worse and it got to the point that I couldn't go to bed FIVE hours after eating or I would feel sick. This April was when the constant stomach problems came...I began w/ all of the symptoms I have described on this board: constant nausea, pain and a lump under my ribs, a hollow feeling in the stomach YET very bloated even after a small meal, a gurgling feeling and noises in my stomach and abdomen all of the time, and this horrible feeling in my throat like I could gag or throw up at any second, along with the lump in my throat once in a while.
To answer your question about the anxiety, yes, I think it COULD be anxiety related. Anxiety can really mess up a body, especially the digestive tract. You might want to check out the Inner Ear disorders board because there is a lot of information about the relation of an inner ear problem to an inrease in anxiety. A poster at that board posted an article that showed evidence that an inner ear problem can lead to many other health problems including digestive problems, severe anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc. SO that confuses me a bit because I don't know whether to think that my anxiety is causing my digestive issues, or if my inner ear is causing my digestive issues, OR of course, a combination of both. But I do believe in my heart that the root of all of my anxiety and digestive problems have stemed from my inner ear. I think that because I mainly only feel anxious WHEN I feel sick. It is not the other way around. So, it is a bit confusing and none of my doctors have been able to give me a straight answer.
I guess the best thing we can do is to get all of the necessary tests done regarding the GI problems ANYWAY and see what comes of it. If nothing is wrong there then we know it is just the anxiety and that can be taken care of in other ways. Since I am weary of daily anxiety meds, I am going to wait until all of my tests are completed with the GI doc before I decide to take them. If there really IS an actual physical problem in my GI tract then I will have that taken care of before I start the anxiety meds and THEN decide whether I actually need them. PLEASE NOTE that I am not looking down on anxiety meds. Inner ear issues can be quite problematic and debilitating, especially to a persons mental health SO they are helpful when needed. I just want to be sure that I actually need them by getting all of the necessary tests to rule out physical problems first. I am really rambling here but my point is that I wish I knew exactly how to answer your question. My symptoms all come in cycles and unfortunately I don't know which is the leader, but I have a feeling it is my inner ear--leading to anxiety--leading to GI problems. But we will see what the tests dig up!!
It will be another month before I have my endo so I still have a bit of waiting to do. BUT GOOD LUCK TO YOU on your ultrasound!! I have a feeling I will need one of those too. I hope that the docs can help clear things up for you.
And it's good to see another person w/ my fear--I always feel so silly telling people that I'm afraid of throwing up. But it is the fifth most common phobia!! So it's very common!
Anyway--We should keep each other posted because I think we really have a lot in common and could help each other a lot. I don't think they allow posting email addresses on the board so keep me posted here on how you're doing. And I'll do the same. Hopefully we'll help each other out. Good luck to you and thanks for the post!!!
*hugs* :)

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I think you said your 21? Right? I'm 23. So were close in age. I to feel silly when I tell people my fear, I had no idea it was so common. I wish we could somehow e mail each other, but I will keep you posted on here. Hopefully one day we will both feel like normal people again. I am weary too about taking the anxiety meds. I want to know what is the problem first before even considering it
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi! Sorry I haven't written in a few. NO, I haven't had it done yet because the soonest appointment I could even get for a CONSULTATION isn't until November 5th. But let me tell ya, as the days go on, this thing gets worse and worse and I just keep developing more problems. I'm going to call tomorrow and beg for a sooner appointment.
Have you had one? How are you feeling? Catch me up!

Hi Guys
Looks like we have a bit of a club here !! To let you know, I am 47, male in the UK I have been suffereing with IBS for a long time, maybe 12 years or more and also anxiety and stress. The IBS can give me terrible diarhoea and stomach pains and often a very nauseous feeling. The anxiety can give me dizziness and lightheadedness, a pressure feeling in my head and ears, headaches nosebleeds etc. I am also emetophobic. I agree with you guys, it's impossible to tell any one about it they do not understand and they look at you as if you're mad - including some doctors.
So for years now I have coped with all this and it never really interfered with my life. Until recently.
About 3 weeks ago I had a nasty cough and after a coughing fit, I dry retched a few times. The doctor said it was just the cough causing my diaphragm to spasm. I happened again without the cough and I posted this matter up - to which you replied Krisdance. Thank you. (I am now very reluctant to let myself cough!)
Then there was tonight. I have had a stressfull day at work, plus ex-wives, kids and car breakdowns. I felt sick as I left work, came home and had a lie down but I had to go out to pick up my daughter who lives 30 miles away. I had borrowed a car. I felt sick all the way as I drove, but as I pulled up at my daughters house and stopped, I dry retched several times and it continued for about 5 minutes. Even my ex wife seemed worried. I was so hot and I couldn't stop shaking and decided to come back home - leaving my daughter behind. Now I'm home and feel reasonable if very tired. I am actually hungry now but I haven't got the courage to go and eat anything.
Your symptoms are identical to mine:
"constant nausea, pain and a lump under my ribs, (Mines right side - yours?) a hollow feeling in the stomach YET very bloated even after a small meal, a gurgling feeling and noises in my stomach and abdomen all of the time, and this horrible feeling in my throat like I could gag or throw up at any second, along with the lump in my throat once in a while."
I also get very hot and it feels like my tongue is too large for my mouth.
The problem for me is that I have something very important in my life coming up - I'm an amateur actor and I have a debut for a leading role coming up in 3 weeks - what the hell am I going to do if this keeps recurring? I couldn't go to rehersals tonight because of this.
I'm sure it's stress but I'm going to the doctor tomorrow and I'm going to nag him to do something about it. I'll let you guys know what he says. In the meantime it has been good just talking about it with people who know. Good luck with your tests and lets keep in touch
Be well
Pete

Well, went to the doc this morning. He is convinced it is still related to the cough and that because I have given up smoking, I am swallowing the rubbish out of my lungs and this is adding to the nausea.
I can't say I'm convinced about this
However he has put me on 'domperidone' known over here as motilium and I've had a couple and so far - I'm quite pleased. The nausea has gone and I'm very hungry! (But that could happen anyway so I'll keep taking them for a while before I judge.)
I'll let you know.
Be well

Hi there Pete. I'm glad you're feeling a little better.
What exactly is that medication used for? Did he give it do you deliberately for the nausea or is it meant for something else?

Hi pete,
I'm glad your feeling better too. Do you have post nasal drip? I know I do and it makes me really nauseas. Also did the doctor ever say anything about putting you on antidepressents?

Hi guys
The domperidone is a drug used to prevent nausea by making the motion of the gut smoother and faster, therby preventing sickness. Apparently it's very popular in parkinson's disease sufferers to counteract the nauseousness of the drug's they have to take for their terrible afflication.
Anyway - it hasn't worked. Friday was a bad day and Saturday even worse. It was almost a continual retch, retch, retch until about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and then suddenly it stopped. Had a little nausea today but no retching. But I am very nervous, expecting it to occur again at any minute. It's taking over my life.
Doc never suggested anti depressants but I will try anything now. Do you think I should ask him to investigate for inner ear problems?
Best wishes
Pete

Hi Pete,
Sorry your not getting better. Are you dizzy? That would mean you could have an inner ear problem. If your not dizzy then you probably dont have any problems with your inner ear.

Hi guys
Woke up this morning to another bout of retching. So went to the Doctor again.
He did suggest that it might be an inner ear thing although there are no other manifest syptoms for this, apart from a lightheadedness but I suspect that is because I am not eating properly at the moment.
Now I have been prescribed something called prochlorperazine maleate which I have to put under my top lip to dissolve. Most peculiar. It is to treat the vertigo (?) although I don't feel dizzy. I suppose to be fair, that this is something that is very difficult to diagnose and he has to eliminate this. If I'm not better by Thursday I have to go for some blood test. (My BP is normal).
Lets keep in touch
