Hi ya'll, havin a whirl with gastritis and reflux here, Dr. put me on Protonix, this is day 9. I do notice some of the gurgling and gnawing is gone, but nights are still pretty bad,,,PLEASE share with me how long it took your PPI's to really kick in. I SURE WOULD APPRECIATE IT!. I guess I'm impatient, but have battling this for a couple months now. I've read on this board that you need to really give the PPI's time, how much time is that?. Please share you success stories.
Thanks in Advance

It can take from several weeks to several months to notice the full benefits of PPIs. Also, if it doesn't start working you may need to be switched to another PPI. There are 5 of them and for some reason people will respond to 1 and maybe not to the others. ALso, are you follwoing the lifestyle changes in addition to your medication treatment? Sleeping with the head of your bed elevated, diet, not wearing tight fitting clothing, etc?

Sara, thanks for responding, I have noticed some difference as the gnawing has settled down quite a bit, and I'm not getting that real sick feeling all over that I was getting, but insted, I think the the Protonix is gassing my upper stomach up big time!. I have my bed elevated, not wearing tight clothes, eating a bland diet. Everynight the Gas in the upper stomach starts which is very uncomfortable. I may switch to Nexium and see if thats any better, Dr. gave me a script for it, but I read that it can cause gas too...whats a gal to do?...sheeeese.

They put me on protonix too and I took it in the morning for 2 weeks and it didn't help a lick but when I got me endoscopy done he uped it to two times a day (once in the morning, once at night) It's helped a little. I've noticed some difference. But it can take a while. I was on prevacid before and it worked great for 3 weeks when stopped! /you just have to find the right one.

I take Prilosec twice a day (before breakfast & before bed) and it seems to increase my already gassy state. I take a Phasyme Ultra (simethicone, maximum dose available O-T-C) gel cap before bed & that seems to help. Also, you could try fennel tea (or just chew the seeds--available in the spice section of grocery stores).
Cheers!

I was on Protonix twice a day for 5 months. Then it seemed to quit working for me. Now I'm on Nexium twice a day. It is starting to help a little more than the Protonix did. I still get bad days through also. Hang in there. Someone else posted that one PPI may work for some and not for others, is correct. Give it a little more time. If it's not helping , then talk to your doctor about a different PPI.
