Emmab, I have had several run-ins with these little critters. My daughter kept getting them last year, almost everytime she came home from a weekend at her dad's. (grrrrrr) Anyways, I researched this on the net, and I have found, that if you mix a little of your everyday conditioner, some tea tree oil, and some eucalyptus oil, and saturate the hair with it, put a shower cap on, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Then lather up, and rinse well. And I have found that when I rubbed a lemon on the hair, that the juice helped to unstick the nits from the hair shaft. As for your house, make sure you CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!!! Clean everything that has had the slightest chance of being touched by the infected head. And run your vacuum cleaner very frequently, to get any critters that may have fallen off. Hope this helps!!! Good luck!!!

Rid and Nix are sold in any drugstore. Just make sure you follow the directions.

Use the Nix or Rid shampoo as directed. Then after you use it get a good comb. A fine tooth comb or look in your pharmacy for a nit comb. The shampoo comes with one but it is not a very good one. I bought a special nit one that had metal teeth. Worked great. Then get a good hair conditioner and just goop it all over the hair and comb every inch of the head. The conditioner will immobilize the lice that maybe weren't killed by the shampoo and will ease in removal of the nits. You need to do this every day until you see no more nits or lice. Wash linens in hot soapy water and dry in the dryer on highest setting the linen will take. Bag up stuffed animals for 2 weeks in air tight sack. Vaccum bedding and carpet. As for prevention, I don't really know. I have read about the tea tree oil being a good deterent. Good Luck.

i have worked with children for many years. the best solution that i have found works better than any "pesticides" would be to use ordinary oil, any type of oil will do as long as you saturate the head very well and cover it up it up with a shower cap. after, you need to blow dry the childs head while it is still saturated with oil in the cap, to make sure u kill the lice and not to mention this also helps to loosen the nits from the hair for easier removal. be sure to have the heat on the lowest setting so that you don't burn the child. by getting rid of head lice this way, you save the trouble of subjecting your child to pesticides on their heads.
