My Dr. wants me to have a biopsy done.
She recommended it a year ago.
I ran scared..never ever had it done.
Now i know that I need it, but still too chicken to have it done.
I've heard nothing but bad things about liver biopsy's...won't do it.
Anyone here can tell me what it's like? Does it hurt?
Things are getting bad here....taking MilkThistle like food.

Giddyup715,

The biopsy will be uncomfortable, but they'll give you a local and maybe even something to keep you calm. My biopsy did hurt, but according to my nurse, it was a little different than the ones normally done - they were actually trying to get into the lesions on my liver. The nurse told me that most liver biopsies are just getting some of the liver itself and not a specific spot like mine.
Good luck and keep us posted!

My local hospital only does biopsies guided by catscan, and give versed and demarol before beginning.

I did not even realize they had started when they told me they were done. Insist on being sedated and be sure they use ultrasound or catscan for guidance. The only pain was for a couple of days if I breathed too deeply or moved a certain way - just lasted a few seconds.

There is absolutely no reason a biopsy should hurt.

Good luck!

I can no longer keep quiet- I am just dying to run my mouth about this topic! I am 27, and so far, I have had One oral surgery, one hernia surgery, one laproscopy-where they found and fixed the problem, 4 c-sections, one thyroid biopsy (FNA), and A liver biopsy (FN). Hands down, if I had to chose to have any one of those surgeries again- it would be my liver biopsy. That was the most painless- really should say pain free for me. I felt pressure and a funky feeling when they took each sample, but it wasn't painful- just a little nausiating-because I knew what was going on. It was all a mental thing with the nausia. I freak out about needles, and I knew there was one in my stomach. After wards, I could have danced the mambo- if I knew how- and if I wasn't so increadibly underheight for my weight. Ya know, alot of people call it fat, but thats just not true. If I were 8 ft 9, my weight would be average-therefor, its not that I'm fat. I'm just under tall. Well fed. Well rounded. vertically challenged and horizontally endowed. call me what you want....but I stick to my opinion.....I'm not fat- I'm just too short for my weight!

I had a liver biopsy in April, and let me tell you I was petrified!!!! I almost didn't go through with it I was so scared. They gave me a valium about 30 minutes before the biopsy and that helped a lot. Right before the biopsy they tried to give me consious sedation, but I was scared of that, so she just gave me a light dose of it. It was a real strange feeling, but it did not hurt. I was a little sore for a few hours afterwards, but I didn't even need to take a pain pill. I started having severe pain 2 days afterwards, went back to the ER and I was having some mild bleeding, but everything was fine. I would recomend it. Then you will know what you are dealing with. Good luck!!!

I just had a ultra sound guided liver biopsy a few days ago and it was absoultely painless. The only thing I felt was the shot when they numbed me. Nothing to worry about........Don't lose any sleep over it.
