Hi
I have not been diagnosed with diabetes or hypoglycemia but have had bad health probs for years. Recently I was really fatigued all the time and have completely cut out all refined sugar. I was aving symptoms where my eyes would be covered with black spots (like I had been looking up at the sun or something) they completely covered my eye for about 2 mins. I also get when I eat about two hours later I feel like I am going to collapse, I feel like I am in a bubble and feel really sick I have to eat something sugary to make me feel better. My symptoms have improved since cutting out sugar. I have just had a blood fasting sugar test done but as I haven't eaten sugar for a while (4months) have I stopped myself from getting a fair result? Will it still show up a problem?
Thanks
leanne
Hi sounds like the things in your eyes are something that is called FLOATIES. I think its dead cells and are suppose to be harmless. But if they cover your entire eye at once i`d be checked by eye dr. ( I need to do this myself ) I don`t know if its good to totaly cut out refined sugar all together. When i cut back for just a few days i get the shakes and feel very bad but then I have diabetes and years before that had low blood sugar.Your blood test should tell alot, Good luck and the best advice is to always ask you dr.

Leanne,
Since you say your symptoms have improved since you cut out sugary things, it's possible that you may be hypoglycemic (low blood sugar). This is a condition where the pancreas actually puts out too much insulin in response to stimulus (high carbohydrate food). This causes the blood sugar to drop too low, and then you need to eat carbs to raise it, thus creating a vicious cycle. The best course of action for hypoglycemia is to follow a high protein, low carbohydrate diet.
Did you tell your doctor all your symptoms? You may actually need a glucose tolerance test to diagnose hypoglycemia, as it doesn't always show up from just a fasting bg test.

He has suggested me possibly having the other glucose test but I don't fancy it much!! If it's the one I'm thinking of.
Is it dangerous to cut out refined sugar completely? I still eat real sugar like that found in fruit and juices and in dried fruit like dates........When I say I feel better by cutting out sugar what I mean is I am not sleeping all day like I was a couple of months ago (I felt like I had been drugged all day) but the other symptoms like the eye thing and the too low blood sugar feeling has got worse. I'm happy I can go out all day now though...I don't know you can't win, maybe I will go back to eating refined sugar in moderation (if that's possible!)

Leanne,
I've had gazillions of tests, and the glucose tolerance test just isn't that bad! I would strongly recommend that you have it, because it's impossible to tell what's going on at this point without it (unless your fasting bg comes back as very high and you are diagnosed with diabetes). But, if your fasting bg is okay, you could still be having problems dealing with carbs, and you should find out definitively so you can know how to treat it.

Thanks Ruth,
Yeah I really do think I have a problem with the carbs. I am due to start treatment for low adrenal and hypo thyroid maybe that will help the blood sugar thing.
I will post my blood results when I get them and see if they are significant.
The other thing is I fasted before it from about midnight but didn't have the test until 2pm the next day......I didn't feel awful when I had it done as I usually feel ill a couple of hours after food so I am worried that nothing will show.Oh well we will see!
