Hey all you non-smoking people, let's do a check-in and post ours "stats" again!
Guess I want to 'cos...
Today is my one year anniversary! :D
I have probably saved at least $1200 dollars! woo hooo...(purchased them in military commissary)
I used nicotene patches, and brought my frustrations and joy over it to this board! It was tough at first, but now it's a breeze! I rarely crave, and when I do, it sure passes quickly.
To all of those out there that say they want to quit, but fear that you can't do it, I say, keep on trying, NEVER :nono: give up! You CAN do it! I smoked for 30 years, and I loved every minute of it. But I finally got tough with myself, and I wanted it bad enough that I finally became stronger than those little buggers! I had the victory over the nico demon...hehehe
Love, Deda :) a very HAPPY NON SMOKER!!

Congrats Deda!!!!!! That is wonderful! You are an inspiration around here. :D
Myself and my hubby are both still 100% smoke free. We have not had a cigarette in almost 5 months, and we have saved a WHOPPING $2,492.00!!! And yes, we can tell. We both feel so much better. Our house, car, clothing, bodies, and children don't smell awful anymore. It is such a refreshing feeling, and such a great feeling of accomplishment, knowing that we won. The cigarettes didn't win, we did. We took control. It's great.
We did it cold turkey but I tell people to use whatever method works, whether it be the patch, wellbutrin, Smoke Away, etc. I also loved to smoke, did it for 13 years, and believe me, I have hardly no willpower. I know that if I can find the strength to do this, anyone can. I quit cold turkey, going from 2 and a half packs a day to absolutely nothing. Have faith in yourselves and good luck!

Well, it's been 6 months today! :D That's how long I quit for the first time. This time, I will not start again. I don't think about it much now if at all. I don't stink. lol I also have so much energy now. :bouncing: I never realized the amount of energy that I would gain when I stopped. I also think my voice is higher which tell me the effect smoking had on my voice. Has anyone noticed that GERD increased or is noticeable after quitting? Phoebe

Hey Phoebe, Congratulations!!!! That's great, 1/2 way to one year! And I'm sure you will make it to that big anniversary. :nono: I'm glad you've decided not to smoke again, you and me both. I had made it to a year not smoking 2 x before, but this time I won't ever go back! I really can't stand to be around it anymore, and I LOVE all the benefits I've gained from quitting, SO many!
About the GERD...I never have found out about there being a connection with quitting smoking. My GERD did start about 1 month after I quit, but I think mine was more caused by my hypothyroid. Did you ever go and post and ask about that on the GERD board? Or you could always start a new thread on this board and ask. My GERD is quite a bit better, (I'm not using prescription meds for it right now, only Tums), but it does come back every now and then, altho not so severe. Aloe vera juice has helped, and eating apples seems to help. Of course there are some foods, (like onions and tomotoes) that are an absolute no no. Hope you can get it under control soon!
Congrats again girl, and keep up the great work..

Ok, I will join in on the pats on the back!!!!!!!!!! I had quit for 6 yrs and then after my divorce smoked on/off for three years. It was a joke am i or aren't I. I would quit for 3 months, 6 wks, etc. etc., but this time it will be ONE YEAR in little over a month 12/28..Is my anniversary. Of course I was planning on quitting when I had my surgery 12/29 (cervical fusion), and my friend says, yeah right when they take out your right lung since I enjoyed the social part on the docks, ha lol! BUT in the Hospital I had a spot on my lung along with getting pneumonia which lenghten my stay and was told it was cancer no dubt and needed a CT on New year's eve no less..Well it proved to be just collapsed and my PCP doc says, Ok God is giving you a second chance in life to take heed. and thus I have. I can't stand the smell of smoke on others, etc. too. Have to come home and wash my clothes and my hair before crawling in bed. My guy smokes and has been really nice about not smoking around me much or if so away from me...He is trying to get a job (early retirement) and when he does then he will try to quit again as well....Lord knows everyone should. Now I know why I made it on the disability this past year, the savings from my smoking. ha lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shauna

Congratulations to you too, Shauna, and I'm happy for you that it was not cancer. I think he IS giving you a 2nd chance, and I know after a scare like that, that I would NEVER smoke again! Keep giving yourself those pats on the back, you deserve them too!!
And good luck to your guy quitting. Tell him if we can, he can do it too! :nono:

 Hi.........Deda..
Thanks for the pat..YES I am really proud of myself this time around. I had NO CHOICE as the asthma flare up from the pneumonia hung on for three whole months. scared to death to say the least. Now since oct., I have battled cold in the lungs agai and the breathing is hard...Why is it we wait til we are faced with life altering decisions to stick to our guns sometimes. My guy KNOWS he must quit, his Dad died of lung cancer....He just needs to get a job. They gave him severance for 1yr as the early retirement package and has a pt job on weekends which he hates as it is nights and not sleeping good. BUT he does not smoke around me as he knows it makes it where I can't breathe if I am sick....Can't stand the smell is the other issue but with the Asthma flare ups (funny they are always at their worst when I don't smoke).......Arguement with people when I did, but I have more trouble not smoking with my asthma then when I do....Now maybe once the lungs heal that will be another story....Kudo..........peace, blessings and prayers, Shauna

You poor thing, sounds like you've been through a lot. Just keep taking good care of yourself by NOT smoking, and eating healthy, vitamins, etc. Your lungs will heal in time. Congratulations to you for sticking to it! It will all be worth it.
Take good care of yourself! :)

Yes I have been through the fire and back this past year to be sure. I can handle the bone fusions, the OA pain, etc., and all but when you get a cold/flu ontop of it, that is what sets me back more than anything. I will heal and I always recall the saying God never gives us more than we can bear! That in itself has helped me along with Phil 4:13. I can do all things through Him who gives me strength..peace, blessings and prayers to you! kudos and keep up the good work too, Shauna

And he has given me the strength to do it this time. I still pray often that I don't falter. (Didn't do this on a regular basis in the past, and always failed). I feel strongly that I will make it this time. But ya know, I think once we're addicted to nicotene, it's a life long addiction, like alcoholism, or any other drug addiction, I think we'll always have to beware of relapse, that there will be times when we will be more vulnerable to relapsing. I mean, look how you went 6 years, and I've heard of many other ppl going years and years only to go back to it again! It's definitely a life long process, this quitting thing...for me anyway. But I do think it gets easier as time goes on. :) Thank the Lord.
God bless you, Shauna, and I'll pray that you stay well.

 Hi Deda,
Yes it is a day by day thing just like the people in AA for sure. It's a drug that is legal to buy if one is 18! Not good for us indeed. Yes, I have quit and stopped so many times in my 30 yrs of smoking that one doctor added up and said I smoked for 15yrs. We counted the 1/2 cigs, etc., 2-4 times a day etc. etc., but with the Asthma. Funny thing is, my asthma attacks are worst if not smoking...go figure...Bottom line, I will be btter once I am healed from the pneumonia bout of this past year. When I didn't smoke for those 6yrs, I breathed beter, smelled better, and felt better. That there is enough to make one take heed. This second chance I was given, I just have to hold onto to. Yes, I too can falter at any given day, but I continue to pray and ask for His help in not going back. god bless you, Shauna

Shauna- -
Yes, I too have done numerous quits in my 30 years of smoking! Glad this one is working so well, as I don't want to do it again!! How long have you had the asthma? I'm betting in time your lungs will heal up from your bout of pnuemonia and they will become stronger too. Are you taking some good antioxidants for your lungs? (vitamin E, C, etc?)
Hope you're having a great day today!

 Deda,
I take a mutli-vitiamn called Optium-D for diabetics. It's A-z basically. also, take immunosense. My inhalers are Advair and alubterol. Found out I was puffing on my advair for 10 days and it was emput!! Not good HUH!!!! No wonder I had troubles. that is when my daughter realized just how sick I am! over-loaded with all these medical issues at once...she is really kicking in and being a huge help now. I was told I have the adult onset asthma and that was aboutmid nineties to late. Can't recall which was first, Asthma or the diabetes. BUT at a child I was so well I had to fake being sick til I got Mono in High school then it's been downhill ever since basically looking back. Had bronchitis back then. Mom would tease I would freeze a cold as it never kept me in bed in those days... YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We can do this Deda for the rest of our lives. One surgeon told me it takes 6 months to clear ones luns with new tissue. A corner of mine will always be scarred but the rest can heal..have a good one. Shauna

Glad you found out Shauna that your inhaler was empty...geez, no wonder you weren't feeling well. Hope you're feeling a lot better now! :)
Yesssss! WE CAN DO IT SHAUNA!!!! We're doing right it now, right? :) And we can stay non-smokers, girl, just gotta stay in the right mindset, as it's all a mental thing now.
When your surgeon said it takes 6 months to clear the lungs and make new tissue, was he referring to after pnuemonia, or after quitting smoking?
Take care Shauna..
