Has anyone had a magnesium deficiency? I have heard it's common, but I was wondering what the symptoms are? I heard that women who take the pill are likely to have this.

Symptoms can range from depression, anxiety, add, and osteoperosis. Magnesium is an important mineral for attacking the nerves, in other words, calming the nerves. It's supposively great for insomnia too. Also, Magnesium helps calcium to be stored in the body too. If you don't have an adequate amount, alot of calcium isn't absorbed by the body. Magnesium is greatly depleted from the soil today which is the culprit why many americans are deficient.

Thanks for your response. I was going to take a supplement, but I have heard it can cause stomach problems, so I think I'll try to incorporate more into my diet. The thing is, I looked up what foods are good sources, and I don't eat any of them and I haven't for a long time. I found out I was deficient in b a while ago, and the supplements have really helped me. I'll check with my doctor to see if maybe they have ablood test that tells which minerals you are deficient in. Thanks

My son became very mag deficient when he was in liver failure, not sure why.But his big symptom was these really horrid muscle contractions. He was just lying on the couch one night ,watching TV when all of the sudden he lets out this little yelp.I looked over and his hand had actually just suddenly snapped kind of backwards, then it contorted off to the side and then the arm started to do all of the same bizarre contractions/contortions.It was really insane to watch.he was also experiencing alot of pain.I called his doc and he told me to take him to the er.When they ran blood tests on just about everything ,they found his magnesium to be very very low.he was given Mag-ox 400 to take and was also given an IV with mag in it.after he had the IV and started the tabs three times a day, he was fine but wow, was it ever bizarre to watch this episode.i had never ever seen muscle contractions like that before in my life.Just thought you would like to know.Marcia

Magnesium is present in every cell of your body and about 67% of it is in your bones. Lack of magnesium can cause any muscle in your body to go into spasms. An important muscle that you want to function properly is your heart.

It is estimated that about 80% of people in the USA are deficient in magnesium. It is needed for calcium absorption as well as activates many vital enzymes in your body.

There is a good web site available about the Miracle of Magnesium that is well worth reading:

I also have a low magnesium level due to having to take diuretics for high blood pressure. Apparently the more you go the more you lose. My levels are very low and have been that way on and off for over a year. My symptoms are...severe muscle cramps throughout my entire body, muscle twitching & tingling, sensitive to noise, and I get very irritable. I've also had palpatations and was just recently in the hospital for dehydration, low potassium and magnesium levels and low blood pressure. After I was discharged from the hospital I looked it up on the computer and was amazed at how many people suffer from it.

ATTENTION FEEL BAD--Did you ever find out why your son went into liver failure? The same thing happened to my mother in 1994 and she had no liver problems that we knew of. After many tests it was determined that she had Primary Scerlosing Cholonagitis which was secondary to Ulcerative Colitis she had for many years.
