Hello Everyone...Im new to this board

Iam a nineteen year old female,Im not overweight,Im 5-9 and I have bunions.I never really knew what they were before but they bug me.Im not sure why I have them because I thought you got those at an older age but I have had them for as long as I can remember.I went to see the doc and he said they would try sepcial shoes and insoles but those are like 400 dollars and they might not even work.

What other options are there?

Thanks

Bunions have numerous causes, but for many of us it was a genetic disposition. Bunions are not an old age occurance, the reason you might see them with many elderly is due to poorly fitting shoes. High heels contribute to bunions as well. Like you I have had mine thoughout childhood.

If they do not hurt, just wear supportive shoes that fit, stay away from high heels that put a lot of pressure on the ball of your foot. Special shoes and insoles will only slow down the progression of bunions.

If your bunions hurt, then surgery may be your course of action. Bunion surgery is not pleasant and has a long recovery. Research your options on the internet, medical libraries, etc. Become informed, then make a decision.

Best wishes not matter what you chose. -eko

hello
i too have had bunions since i remember! im also 19 yrs old i had a right foot bunionectomy in june, and as of now im still recovering! if your feet dont hurt it would be wise to have surgery for looks! just wear a good pair of shoes. i know how you feel, but the surgery is a long recovery! good luck and take care.

Hi, another 19y.o. here too and I have bunions since young. A podiatrist told me that you might get the bunions genetically... he even told me that it can skip generations... Poor fitting shoes, tight shoes, high heel shoes can make the bunion worse! There are a lot of information on bunions on the internet. It sure is not an elderly thing, young people get it too.

What specialist or doctor have you gone to see? A orthopedic foot/ankle surgeon or podiatrist might be useful.

Make sure you get real good shoes that has good support and cushioning! You might ask your doctor to recommend you the model and brand of the shoe that could be suitable. I have custom-made insoles and yes, they are expensive! They haven't help with my bunions at all but they do help with my lower back and my balance. I can't go without my insoles or I'll hurt badly.

If your bunions don't hurt, you might just want to get a comfortable sport shoe or sneakers with good cushioning and support. You can get those ready-made insoles too(they are much cheaper), but they are not an exact fit 100%. If possible, don't wear tight fitting shoes; make sure your toes have room to wriggle around in the shoe.

There are alternative treatments out there, e.g. chiropractor, accupunture, and many more.

Surgery is usually the last option I guess, and it's more for those people who have pain. Bunion surgery for cosmetic purposes is usually not encouraged. As you can read from others experience on the surgery here, it's a tough and long recovery process. Good luck to you and hope this helps.

Hi keisha122, how was your surgery like? Is it local anesthesia and do you know the name of the method of the surgery? Are you having a left foot done later? So did your surgery affect schooling/studies? How long have you had the bunions before you considered surgery? ~sorry if I asked alot... Have a speedy recovery!!! :)
