Hello all,

I spoke with my father this morning..he's doing alright after treatment number 7. He is having a bought with diarreha which he is having difficulty controlling. He is receiving Oxaliplatin/Luecovorin/5 FU over 48 hours.

Any experience w/ the diarreha issue would be helpful...did you use Immodium? if so how much how often. Anyone have to have any other meds to stop? Was treatment affected?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Imodium can be very helpful with bouts of diarrhoea though it does not work with everyone. My husband found it worked wonders. You should ask the doctor for the dosage but our oncologist told my husband to take two straight away and then one every two hours and continue even for some hours after the last trip to the bathroom. But I think it is important to ask your own doctor. Good luck to your Dad. Don't forget that he must drink lots of fluid...not only because of the diarrhoea but also to counteract the effects of the chemo. Dehydration can make you feel really awful and can be avoided.

My husband started back on Oxaliplatin last week and also has problems with diarreha. We also found its good to take Imodium as alison stated but last week I thought about the BRAT diet we used with our boys when they were little and had a virus. It really worked great with my husband's diarreha.
Bananna's
Rice
Apple sauce
Toast

He just stayed on it for a few meals till he felt better then moved (slow) to a normal diet. The Rice really seem to help. Hope this will help, I understand how hard this problem can be...

A few marshmellows also can help. I found immodium worked well but often had to take three and sometimes four to stop the tap from running. Make sure he drinks enough liquids to stay hydrated. Sport drinks work best because they contain electrolytes but tomato, apple or orange juice is good too.
