Hi all,
I just returned from the doc, I am 7 weeks post op from my Great Toe Fusion and I have graduated to a surgical shoe (so long cast) and can begin bearing weight!

My joint is amazingly 95% fused according to the doc and aside from the initial pain and boredom of being home for this long, I've had an uneventful recovery so far. My joint was fused with 2 titanium screws.

I took everyone's advice and asked for PT right away. I actually called the PT and asked what they could do for me as I became weight bearing again so when I asked the Doc for a Rx, I was able to tell her exactly what they would be working on. She didn't hesitate to write the script.

I go back to the Doc in three weeks and then try to put on a sneaker. I am excited but scared to walk. I came home, had a glass of wine and think I'll leave the walking til tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's encouragement. I'll let you know how things progress!

Great news! Here's to good recovery at physical therapy. I have one bit of advice regarding P.T. I took a couple of Tylenol about an hour or so before therapy. It helped for the first couple of sessions. I was amazed at how little movement it took to bring on the pain. I found through my experiences by taking the meds before, I was actually able to accomplish more at therapy because I was not hindered by the pain. Just a thought! Good luck!

Congrats! It is always nice to hear good news! :D It is a good feeling to be walking again, slow and steady is the way to go. Just an FYI, when I was told to start wearing a tennis shoe I ended up going a size larger because of lingering swelling, especially at the end of the day. I didn't spend a lot on that first pair as they were temporary.

thanks you all for the good thoughts.

I've been walking for 2 days now and it feels so odd. My foot hurts but not too bad. I walk with two crutches, as the doc told me to, putting weight flat on the foot...not rolling thru a gait. The tendon on the bottom of my foot feels very tender, like it needs stretching. Oh well, slow and steady. I set up a schedule for myself. Twice around my kitchen ever 2 hours. Seems like a plan. I went to the mailbox at the end of my driveway today! I feel as if I'm progressing. I begin PT tomorrow.

I even started cautiously dreaming about cute shoes!
