I have just bought a bag of flax seeds from the GNC. 'GNC natural brand, cold-milled flax seeds, certified organic.' My question is, I know you are supposed to grind them, but the seeds look grounded already. The directions just say to sprinkle a TBL on anything and eat. Just wanted to know if I have to ground them any further or what, if anyone if familiar with this brand.
Thanks.

You can grind them with a coffee grinder. When I purchased mine at a vitamin shop, the lady there said it needs to be grinded up because our body isn't capable of breaking up the seeds so that it doesn't just pass through our body. So if you don't grind, it's like you never eat any.

You could consider using a Mortar & Pestle Set that Chefs use to grind the seeds. You can purchase one online or in the kitchenware department of a department store.

They are already ground (milled means ground or polished). Once you open the vacume sealed bag be sure to store them in either the fridge or the freezer and use them w/in 45 days. You might do well in the future to buy them unground and do it yourself, that way you grind only what you need and they don't go to waste.

I am with Gopherhead - by them whole and grind them up yourself. They stay good longer. As well, it is good to find them in a health food store that stores them in a fridge. The longer they sit already ground, unrefrigerated, the faster the benefits of the flax disapate. The good thing is these days they package things pretty air tight so maybe I am just being obsessive compulsive ;)
Enjoy your flax seed...

YOu can find them a lot cheaper than GNC. I saw them locally and they wanted like fifteen dollars for a pound. excuse me, but that's highway robbery. I buy mine for 89 cents a pound and grind them in a Krups coffee grinder. Had bad luck with Mr. Coffee brand. I eat a half cup a day. Since I got up to this level, I started with one tablespoon, I have gotten relief from a host of health problems. I'm off antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, allergy and asthma meds on a daily basis. I had a terrible problem with feeling colder than other people[thyroid test okay] Now, I sleep with the windows open even if it gets below fifty degrees. I started eating them in June. I'm looking forward to a reduced heating bill this winter. I live in Portland, Oregon. So far, this is October, the temp hasn't gone below 48 degrees at night. It will start dropping soon. I found out about the effect it has of improving your tolerance to cold on a website about horses. If you feed it to animals, it will make their coats really shiny.
Here is my recipe. Two cups water, one cup rolled oats, one half cup ground flax seeds. Boil water, dump in oats and flax. Cook on medium or low heat ten minutes. Follow oat cooking instructions. Don't use the instant. It tastes great. Oats and flax are a powerful combination. Sometimes I cook whole oats. It takes longer, but I like them better. This might be too much trouble for some. It takes about forty five minutes to cook them. with whole oats, you are sure of getting all the nutrients. Whole oats and whole flax seeds will keep a long time. AFter grinding the flax, you must use it or store it in the fridge. I hear good things about flax oil, but the whole seeds have a lot more nutrients. Please learn more about the many health benefits of eating ground flax seed. You should mix it with something because it's not that great by itself. Good luck.
