I was told to take PreNatal vitamins and have been doing so for a long time. When I stopped taking them for a month I got depressed and had no energy...I also gained 15 lbs. Once I started taking them again I lost 7 lbs. so far. I'm wondering if the weight gain was because I stopped taking the vitamin. Also, is it bad that I am taking it since I'm not pregnant??? I do have a history of depression and have found that I seem to "wake up" when taking the vitamin everyday...is that even possible or all in my mind?? Is there something else I can use to keep me from spending all day in my room??? I feel like I hide and have no energy to do anything...almost as if I'm sick. When I am up and going I am very energetic and most people would be shocked to know my life away from work...I don't want to go to the doctor. Can anyone help???

It is clear that you need to take vitamins, it is NOT in your mind, but I don't think they have to be prenatal vitamins if you want to stop taking them. Look at the label and see what they have in them and then you can look for a regular multi-vitamin that has about as much of each vitamin in it except that you may be better off not taking any iron, it is possible to get too much iron stored in your body. It is an absolute fact that depression can be caused by a lack of certain vitamins and if you feel better taking vitamins, why worry when they are helping you? You might even want to add a B complex such as a B-50 capsule and some omega oils such as Carlson's cod liver oil (that tastes bad) or Coromega (that tastes like orange candy) plus some extra vitamin C and niacin (which can make you flush) or niacinamide (non flush) to see if they help you feel even better. If you go to a health food store they can help you find brands that don't have additives in them. Online stores are a good choice, too, they usually show what is in the products so that you can make sure they don't have gluten or sugar or other additives in them.

I honestly think that maybe the fact that they have so much iron in them is what helps me. Maybe not but I don't eat a lot of things that are a good source of iron and at times have wondered if I could be suffering from iron deficiancy..only because I bruise easily, get hiccups quite often, and I don't have a lot of energy...but then again it would just be best to find out from a dr. I just really really don't want to go to one...

Easy bruising and fatigue are both signs of vitamin C deficiency, although they can occur with anemia, too. Try doing a web search on vitamin C and bruising. If you try taking a couple of grams of vitamin C a day it should only take a week or two at the most to see if it is helping with the bruising. (I actually take about 10 grams a day, myself, in 3 doses.)

WOW! I hope you drink a lot of water, as I thought that high doseages of vit-C are linked to kidney stones. How long have you been taking 10g/day?

I do try to drink a lot of water and although good hydration is important when a person takes large doses of vitamin C the idea that high dosages of vitamin C are linked to kidney stones in a person with normal renal function is entirely theoretical. There have actually been studies done that indicate that high doses of vitamin C (along with plenty of water) can help dissolve kidney stones in people who already have them. People who have impaired kidney function should only take large doses of vitamin C under a doctor's supervision but there is no evidence that large doses of vitamin C cause stones or kidney damage in people with normal function even at very high doses.
I have been taking 10-15 grams a day for about 5 months, sometimes as much as 30-40 grams when I am fighting a cold. (I don't think I would even be fighting off a cold except that I haven't been getting enough sleep lately.) My son currently needs to take over 100 grams a day so you can be sure I have thoroughly researched the safety of vitamin C before giving him so much.
If you want to know more about the arguments regarding the safety of large doses of vitamin C try reading the Great Vitamin C Debate thread in this board. Nat did a good job on the side against large doses and I think I did a good job on the side for large doses, but you have to decide for yourself which side you think was supported the best!

For fighting a cold, why go to such extremes as 30-40 pills / day when there are other proven methods for eliminating a cold? I take echinacea 3x per day when I feel the first throat tinglings of a cold and it pretty much knocks it out. I remained healthy last year while the rest of my family was laid out on the couches with colds and the flu. I remained healthy until I stopped the echinacea after 6 weeks to cycle it (a month after they all got better). You have to admit that you are going to extremes with vit-C. Are you under the care of a natropathic dr or nutritionist?

I don’t take pills, I take the powder in water, and so it isn’t any more difficult to take than Echinacea. Why do you think that taking vitamin C in larger amounts for colds is extreme? It is a substance natural to the body. We all tend to think that things we are not familiar with are strange. Have you read about the work of Klenner and Cathcart with vitamin C and what it can accomplish in larger doses? I know there are plenty of people who think taking Echinacea is strange, too, but since you are informed about it, it isn’t strange to you. Maybe your family with the colds and flu think taking Echinacea is as strange as you think taking 40 grams of vitamin C is.
My son is under the care of an orthomolecular doctor, which means that he uses naturopathy, homeopathy, nutritional supplements and even conventional therapies when they are really needed and useful. And he does recommend taking “higher” amounts of vitamin C along with other vitamins and plenty of water. In the case of my son, do you think it is extreme to take 100+ grams of vitamin C, which is proven safe in high dosages, to replace a drug that is known to cause liver damage in some people, besides having other nasty side effects?
I think it is great that echinacea is working so well for you, but I think you should try to learn more about the uses of vitamin C in large doses before you decide whether you think it is extreme or not. If you are interested in learning more try a web search on vitamin C and Klenner, who used vitamin C for many purposes, including curing 60 cases of polio with no residual paralysis during the 1948 epidemic, and vitamin C and Cathcart, who also has used vitamin C in large doses in over 20,000 cases with very good results, and who proposed or discovered the concept of bowel tolerance for vitamin C, which is a method of discovering how much vitamin C each individual actually needs at a particular time.

I am interested in the brand of Prenatals you are taking? Cand you tell me the brand and if you are still taking them, how you feel different?
THANKS!
