Hi,
I naturally have extremely long eye lashes and it kind of makes it hard to apply mascara without making a huge mess. I get mascara above my eyes all the time. I heard that you have to apply mascara before you vurl but I always have to do the oposite. I found a mascara that works pretty good (Jane Fan Club) but sometimes because my eyelashes are so long they start going in all different directions. I really have a hard time with them lol and I'm just wondering if anyone else has this same problem and what they do about it. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't have that problem. But I think actually you are supposed to curl BEFORE you apply mascara... I always apply a light layer of mascara first, then curl, then apply another heavier coat.

if your lashes are so long, why do you wear mascara? are they thin?

They could be straight, or slightly downward.
I also have naturally extremely long lashes, and sometimes I use mascara just to tone down the somewhat "unfinished" look they have without it. Generally, though, just using a curler is more than enough for that.
For the original poster, curl first, then use a waterproof masacara, scrape most of it off the wand before applying, and apply mainly at the base, and sweep VERY LIGHTLY to the tip. That's really all you need.

I just like them a little darker and with it a little lift. It makes my eyes stand out even more and makes me look more awake.

Yes, they are slightly downward so it kind of gives that sleepy appearance LOL...
Thanks for the tips! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think I read that on the back of a mascara package or something. Not really sure but I like to curl first. It works better that way. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, I have really long, thick eyelashes that have a natural curl (so I have never used an eyelash curler)...but I like to wear mascara anyway because I just like to watch peoples reactions when I tell them that they aren't fake! I've had a couple of people pull at them to make sure they aren't fake! As for you getting stuff on your eyelids, all you do is apply your mascara with your head tilted back just slightly and look down a little so you can see yourself in the mirror, after you are done just stay in that position till it dries! Voila! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Have you heard about blasting your eyelash curler with a hairdryer so it heats up a tad then curl your lashes...or you can run it under hot water for a minute or two, wipe it off and curl away! Be careful though don't get it too hot.

You may also want to trim them a little if they are too difficult to work with. Just a thought.

Actually, I'd like to agree with that. It does sound weird, and I'm sure a few are like "don't ever do that!" but it really can have a nice effect on naturally long lashes.
Mine are very long and naturally curl upward, although I still use a curler to tame them. I also trim my own bangs, and believe it or not my lashes are so long I actually accidentally trimmed them once, with the bangs! Anyway, it actually looked really nice. They looked thicker because the pointed ends were gone, and they were springier when I curled them. So yeah, trimming just a little bit, is not such a bad idea.

A friend of mine has really, really long eyelashes too. What she found works for her is she has her lashes tinted at a salon and then she uses clear mascara just to give them volume. Works for her.
Just another idea to consider. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Beezil, I agree. I just apply mascara to the tips only as you said. But I have dark lashes anyway. If you're blonde though, I don't know, that may not work.

I too have very long thick eyelashes, but my main problem isn't mascara related. It's my glasses!
I can't wear contacts because my eyes are too dry, so I wear glasses all the time. The glass bumps against my eyelashes, so I have to wear them lower on my nose, thus having the top of the rims almost halfway across my eye! it's a real pain. I can't get some types of glasses either, as they sink down too low on my bridge. Anyone else have this problem?

Nela, I have the same problem with sunglasses, I don't wear glasses but the eyelashes bumping on the lens gets REAL old doesn't it? I know exactly what you mean when you say you have to wear the glasses a little lower on your nose! I don't have a solution to this problem but I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I used to have this problem before I switched to contacts. I found that once I started using a curler on them, they went more straight up than forward, and they stopped brushing the lenses (they look great that way too!)
All this talk has me remember two problems I had as a child with my super long curly lashes (which, as a child, were much more pronounced than they are now, as an adult.) I remember as a little girl the lashes at the corners of my eyes used to hook together and tickle the corners, that was so annoying! And then one time, I was walking home from school in the snow, and when I got in my mom started laughing at me because I had about a half inch of snow piled up on each eye's lashes. Being overly sensitive as a child, I got upset that she laughed at me, though.

Well, I'll have to try curling them then. Thanks for the suggestion! LOL.

Yes you can trim them! I read that alot of models have that done for the mascara ads. If you'll notice, they always have the perfect length straight across. It also makes them thicker looking. I don't have really long lashes, but they are kinda thin, so trimming them really helps the look. Give it a try. Those little siscors that you get for your nails work great!

Yes, sometimes people get so hung up on the "length" concept that they forget there are many other lash features that are beautiful. And I've seen some very long lashes that look horrible because they are ungroomed, thin, scraggly, etc. It isn't all about length.
Also, how deeply your eyes are set, how pronounced your lids are, your eye color...those are all factors that play off of the look of your lashes. Being longer doesn't necessarily flatter all these other features.
If you like the look after trimming them, then keep doing it!

I just thought of something. My almost 3 year old is always saying "Mommy, eyes hurt" as she rubs her eyes. This happens almost every day. There is nothing that I can see and she's been checked by her doctor. Did anyone have such a problem when they were young they can remember? I did not even though my lashes are long. Beezil's last post sparked this "aha" moment. Thanks!

Liv, I didn't have that problem when I was a kid, and my lashes were even thicker back then! LOL.
If she's been checked by her doctor, and all is well, it might just be something tiny that got into her eyes. Or she might have a sty?
