I have picked my date to quit smoking, my 27th birthday in November. I am also possibly going to have back surgery, and in that case if I do and it is before my date, I will quit then. I am getting anxious as the days go by, I have been smoking for almost ten years, and quitting scares me to death. It is my security blanket and the smell to me is calming. However, being a nursing major and having had worked in healthcare for as long as I have I am fully aware of all health risks. I have a slight chronic cough already and constant sinus drip. I know I have to quit, I don't want to. It is this huge struggle in my brain. I am on Zoloft right now for anxiety and my dr gave me a script for welbutrin to start two weeks before my quit date. Anyone have any advice to pass on? There are some days when I just want to make the cig I am smoking the last one, but then I get this feeling, like NO! YOU CAN'T!! I dont know. I have heard sucking on straws or chewing on toothpicks help, but I don't know if that is for me. I don't like chewing gum and don't like candy to suck on either. I just end up swollowing or spitting the gum out and bite into the candy within like a minute. I am scared of gaining some weight, but I do know I can lose it easily enough. SO, I am looking for support and help here. Thank you. Melissa

Interesting.. May i suggest on or before your quit date to maybe buy some chewing gum, and have a piece when ever you want a cigarette. Also to buy some incense or those sticks you can burn that create a nice calming smell...

also if you unfortunately do fail which you will not do, becuase you are strong you could always try hypnotherapy.

you mentioned that you might be having back surgery, some kind of fusion if you must stop smoking right? i had lumbar fusion and smoked my last cig. on the way to the hospital. that was 7 weeks ago today!!!. i smoked for almost 30 years so if i can stop any one can!

good luck,
Bob
