Hello everyone,

My big toe nail aquired a fungus and I couldn't get put on any oral antibiotics since I am pregnant (34 weeks tomorrow). Not to mention, that my insurance does not cover Lamisal and it is the only one that I heard that works..and it is expensive.
Anyways...my toe nail went from yellow, to black to being lifted, and now I just stubbed it so I was forced to cut it all the way back. Now I am left with a centimeter of a toe nail that is not even attached to the nail bed! Gross... Will it ever grow back? And will it just reattach itself back to the nail bed? Or will it grow facing up? I have so many questions...
It is so painful right now as well...I am going to call my Dr tomorrow, but I am afraid he will tell me that I will never have a toe nail again! I am so self concious about these things...Sounds petty, but I love(d) my feet!
Is there any hope for nice nails again?
Thanks for all your help :)

I've heard of Listerine therapy for toenail fungus... Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus
by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves
your toenails looking healthy again.

I've never had to do this. It was just on a list of info my niece sent me.

Visit the nail section on this board. There is a lady who posts there who is a nail expert. She has a web page that is full of information about the subject and there are many posts on the nail section about fungus. With you being pregnant, I would definitely post a question there and ask her advice. Sorry about your toe. It sounds very painful.

Thanks for your help. I actually went to the Dr and he said that there is nothing we can do until the baby is born (about 5 weeks) and also when I am done breastfeeding...
OH well...but he did say that I will have a toe nail so not to worry! Phew! He said it might not look normal, but hey..that is what toe nail polish is for, right???
Thanks again :)

In order for the toenail to grow back normal you need to apply Penlac to it and the surrounding nailbed. It could take a year for the nail to grow back completly and all that time you will need to keep applying the Penlac.

What is Penlac? I heard that topical ointments do not work...
I think my Dr is going to prescribe Lamisil, but my insurance right now does not cover it. But, I am changing insurances once the baby is born, so hopefully the new ins does...

Penlac is a prescription. It looks like a bottle of clear nail polish. You wqould probably go through one bottle a month. I don't know the cost sorry.
