OK--firstly, let me say this looks like a really interesting forum...my compliments to whoever thought of it. :) Secondly, I'm not sure if this belongs here, so if not, please feel free to move it to where it would get the best answer. :) But anyway...here goes. This weekend, I was eating lunch with my dad at this restraunt, and I ordered a coffee, and I couldn't reach the sugar...but there was some honey that came with something else. :P So I was like hmmm...and just like spooned some honey into my coffee. :) Then I got to thinking about how my grand parents use honey instead of sugar on ceareal and stuff...then I realized how much more I like that, instead of sugar. lol Is Honey healthier than sugar?

I think honey is definitely healthier than sugar. Our table sugar is refined and out of its natural form. I wouldn't suggest using huge amounts of it, but I know people who cook with honey ( cookies, breads) instead of sugar for health reasons. Of course, if you are have sugar issues (hypoglycemia or diabetes) you still shouldn't use it. I use if on my oatmeal with cinnamon and it is really good. If you like it in your coffee, I think it is a healthier substitute!

I think certain types of honey are actually VERY nutritious as they contain enzymes and I believe antioxidants as well. There are soooo many different kinds. There is the common clover honey and wildflower honey, and I've even heard of avocado honey. Yum!

I'm not sure which one has more nutrients, antioxidants, etc., but I know that comb honey is the only honey which is not processed in any way, so you might want to buy that.

I've heard it's harder for your body to break down the honey..

Blah, I'm trying to remember where I heard that, but I did hear that sugar is better for you than honey.

It may be ever-so-slightly healthier but its better to get rid of the sweet tooth that makes you want sweetness at all.

Using substitutes for sugar doesn't address the addiction to sweetness.

Honey is much better than sugar. Not only is it less processed, but it does contain various nutrients in it. Sugar doesn't have anything in it except sugar. I've got a great puffed rice cereal treat that uses honey, PB, and puffed rice.

Uff-Da!

I agree with veggie girl. Honey does contain very small amounts of nutrients. Find a "Nutritive value of food" chart from a reliable source and see for yourself.

Honey does contain a small amount of potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C, and small amounts of several of the B vitamins. But the amounts it contains are miniscule compared to the foods we usually rely upon for such nutrients. It may contain some other things that aren't on the typical chart or which aren't even known are important at this point. But I have yet to see anything from a reliable source (like USDA, a college nutrition test, etc.) that indicated it was a good source of anything important in the diet according to current knowledge.

Buy an organic honey, the tubs sold at the roadside stall are great as they are cold filled and not heated to high tempuratures to make it run fast through pipes in a big factory therefore destroying enzyms. Also some of the large manufacturers will use sugar fed bees whilst your organic stuff will have been gathered from the wild from possibly a variety of plants. I will never use sugar.Spiking sugars in the body constantly is definatly not a good thing.

Just thought I'd add that I read that the darker the honey the more anti-oxidants it has.
