Have a dental appt today for a broken tooth and my anxiety is severe right about now. Have had severe TMJ disorder for 15 years now and usually avoid routine dental visits at all costs. Now I am forced to go and after my dental appts always experience so much pain from keeping my mouth open that I can't eat or talk for a few days. How does everyone else deal with dental appts with their TMJ condition? Avoidance, like myself?

my TMJ doctor tells me to take a muscle relaxer before i go to general dentist for any work (not sure if this is an option for you or not )
Good luck hope it goes ok

I take Advil and a Xanax before my appt. I've been a dental phobic all my life. When I was little, our DDS didn't give us novacaine before drilling and one time I pushed his hand away and the drill went into his hand. Needless to say, he was mad at me. I say it served him right. lol.

[Please refrain from cuss/slang words...."mad" describes it the same. Thanks - Well-come Moderator]

Thanks Attibert! I thought I was the only one who has neglected my dental hygiene in favor of my TMJ condition. Cleanings are horrific!

My friend had a similiar experiance.....

He had to get a cavity filled....no biggie....but also no freezing....the dentist drilled into a nerve, and my friend jumped from the pain, the drill went into his tongue and sliced it open, they couldn't get it to stop bleeding. My friend was furious....got up outta the chair and fired his dentist on the spot.....

His apointment was free!!!

What a horrible experience. I'm glad he didn't have to pay for that.

Well, the only thing he would do for me was give me a temp filing, insisting that I needed a crown although I insisted my jaw couldn't handle that. I was only open for 5 min, but my jaw is still inflamed today and I am very discouraged. Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Not a favorable predicament to be in.
