Hello,

I need some help understanding this. I am a type 2 Diabetic and currently on 15 units Novalog in the AM and 9 units in the PM. My last labs said my C-Peptide was 4.1, that is good I think. It means that my pancreas is producing Insulin, correct? If I am producing Insulin, why do I have to inject it? My A1c was 7.1. Something must go astray after the pancreas so I don't utilize it good. Why does it help when I inject more Insulin and is this why I am gaining weight?

Thank You

Actually, your c peptide is a little high. You have to look at the c peptide along with the blood sugar at the time. If the c peptide was a little high and the blood sugar was a little high, that could indicate type 2 diabetes which you already know you have.

Your body is producing insulin but maybe it isnt enough to control your blood sugars. Another option is that for some reason, your body is not using the insulin that you produce the way it should.

You have to inject it so that you get enough to control the blood sugars. High blood sugars call for more insulin pure and simple. If your pancreas isnt going to make it, you have to inject it.

Insulin is a hormone that, beyond controlling blood sugars, helps your muscles absorb protein and other nutrients. When your blood sugars are high, the body can't absorb all of the nutrients or the glucose. Once you start taking more insulin, your glucose levels are controlled and what you don't burn, you store. Another factor is that people on insulin are often forced to eat at certain times due to their insulin regimen. Where you might have skipped a meal or snack before, you are now eating.

All of the above factors can lead to weight gain. This is why it is important as a diabetic to exercise and eat right. HTH
