Hello, this is my first question since I have been a member. And I feel like it will be the most stupid one thus far but oh well  Here goes; I have the extra gas problem and sometimes it seems to affect me in a weird way. I will be doing just fine and then all of a sudden my body tenses up, I feel depressed, I feel dizzy and feel kinda scared, then after about 2 or 3 minutes, I feel gas pass and I feel better. Now before, if I had gas, I didn't feel all those things. I just had gas and knew what it was right away. Now its like it has taken on a whole new life and meaning in the way it gets to me. Anyone ever experience this or anything close to it? If I don't get any responses, I will know it was a stupid question. :D

Hi Roselane,
First, there aren't any stupid questions :) I have that happen to me also, not with the dizzy so much but with the rest. I don't know if its anxiety or what, but it's scary. I have alot of ibs and gerd problems and practically every peri symptom known to man....guess this is another, huh? I had the same thing just a couple hours ago but it's also the last day of my period and I'm passing major clots and for some reason my body goes all wacky when that happens too until they're gone. Hopefully someone else will have some words of wisdom for this too!
Hope it gets better for you...
Conni :)

I have had the gas problems. They come in cycles of about a month and then disappear until the next one decides to show up. I have also had the dizzy sensation and tense sensation and that usually occurs right before a hot flash. It is very scary.
I suppose in your situation, you probably get tense and anxious which is common in peri and by tensing up your muscles you also tense up your intestine because that is a muscle also. Thus, the gas. Somehow, this calms you down until the next episode.
These are all peri symptoms. We all put them together in different ways. I tense my muscles and have jaw pain, or indigestion, or very strange aches and pains that no one else has described.
It helps to know that anxiety and indigestion, IBS, irritable bladder ( another tensing situation that goes away when I relax) are all part of peri and the anxiety associated with it.

I have had gas so bad around my left breast that I went to my GP and had an EKG done. I believe you are experiencing a form of anxiety or maybe a panic attack. Panic attacks sent me to my GP last summer and all the other things followed. A panic attack would start and I would have to go to the bathroom (bm). I have all of it under control now thank God. I am taking Paxil CR 25 mg I started it in Feb of this year. I also take 1 mg of Klonopin at night. I am so much better now, but I really went through it with the panic attacks, gas, tingling and numbness, etc. One night the left side of my head went numb for a few seconds followed by the worst panic attack I have had. I also have had a CT Scan of the brain done, and lots of blood tests, pap smear, mammogram. Peri makes you feel like you are dying with some undetermined diease! I don't mean to say all this to make you have fear I was just letting you know the varied responses you can have to Peri-Menopause. Hope you are feeling better.

This isnt a stupid question at all!!!!!!!! I am 44, and for the past year or so (since I have become perimenopausal) I have had those symptom too....so often (several times a week) that now, I am so use to it, I dont let it bother me so bad, knowing it will pass.
I feel tense, dizzy and like I am going to throw up....soon, I will pass gas and feel 100% better!!!!! as a matter of fact, it happened last week, I was waiting on a friend to go have lunch, I thought...oh now, gonna be sick, I felt so panicy and tensed and light headed...within a few min. I passed some gas and felt normal again. so strange! I thought it was just ME!!!!!!!!!

So many strange symptoms occur for a lot of women durning this time. Much of it, I believe, is due to sensitive nervous systems where the autonomic nervous system and all the hormone producing glands that it regulates just goes out of wack. The two parts of the automic nervous system, the sympathetic and parasympathetic are both individually responsible for speeding up and slowing down of our body systems......the loops between the brain and the various endogrine glands that the nervous system regulates just aren't communicating very well for some of us or we are just more sensitive to their shifts. Adrenaline and cortisol, the two adrenal gland hormones, are at times very responsible for most of these strange feelings. I believe the adrenal glands take over much of the role of the ovaries by producing estrogens and progestrones so they are very overworked during this phase of life. Probably most women nowadays suffering from too much stress are beginning this stage in life with already sorely tested adrenal glands and levels of adrenal exhaustion. With higher stress levels (menopause being one of them) we produce greater levels of adrenaline and cortisol which are hallmarks of stress disorders such as panic and anxiety attacks. I found below a site that lists many of the strange physiological and psycological responses that occur during these surges..
Unusual intense energy
Rushes of energy
Electric current
Hot prickly sensation
Intense heat or burning pain
Wave-like motion of energy
Vibration
Ice cold sensation
Tingly sensation
The studies of the gut which is literally a 'second brain' (called the enteric nervous system) point to a whole complex web of microcircuitry driven by more neurotransmitters and neuromodulators than can be found anywhere else in the peripheral nervous system. It's a whole new field of study called neurogastroenterology. Since feelings, such as depression, joy, fear, etc...are chemical responses brought about by these nerotransmiters such as serotonin, dopamine, etc..., it's no wonder also why we would feel certain ways when the bowels are being activated.
It's no wonder so many of us have strange things going on in the bowels during this time. With more adrenaline, which speeds up the enteric nervous system of the gut, coursing through our intestines it's quite possible to have feelings of fear and anxiety accompanying gas, bowel movements, etc....
Post note: Okay I just looked at this post. Forgive the length!! Sometimes my mind really goes off on a tangent,...I just happen to love researching menopause and why so many of us here and at other menopause boards just have so many strange and unsettling sensations, way beyond just hot flashes, night sweats and low libibos.

Hi Calgal,
Thanks for the very informative post! I experienced almost all of the symptoms you listed. These symptoms are very difficult to handle and scares the jeebies out of you when you don't know what they are and most drs. don't have a clue when you describe them. I'd have been less upset and stressed if read this type of info when I was at my worse. Amazingly, even tho I am fairly symptom free, I too am interested in researching on meno. Maybe we get a book published with all the information we've collected here! LOL!
Have a good day,
molly

Hi Molly,
Thank you...glad the post was helpful. I also have thought a book about people like us that are going through a different type of perimenopause/ or one that includes far too many symptoms would probably be quite helpful for others....certainly it could help other women count their blessings if they only get an occasional hot flash or vaginal dryness! Glad you're fairly symptom free...how nice. I'm getting there but still waiting to experience that middle life zest! LOL

Hi, it's me, the one who started this post. Another strange thing happened to me today and I just wandered if it had something to do with what Calgal was talking about with the sensitive nervous system. I was doing fine and all of a sudden my mouth starts to tingle and feel really numb. It even felt weird in my throat. Went home for lunch and had a bowel movement (sorry to be so personal) and about 15 minutes later the numbness lets up and now I'm fine. I hate this drama in my life. I'm so tired of thinking about myself so much. Thanks in advance for any comments. :)

Hi ,
I have not had the numbness you mentioned in your last post but the gassiness you mentioned in the original one I have had and I know from others it is very commong. Someone may have mentioned it but there is a book called The Pause and it goes symtpoms and why it happens and offers some suggestions. It did help me along with this board. I was having alot of intestinal discomfort including gas in Feb/March. My doctor had told me to take metamucil wafers and I think I overdid it and it made it worse. In any event, I started to take estroven, an over the counter, herbal vitamin supplement and also vitamin b complex and those seemed to help me , along with increasing exercise. Whatever, the gassiness subsided which I am grateful for.
anxiety still remains, along with a longer pms at times and since I just turned 50 this year I am hoping that this lovely peri time will be waning SOON!!

This last period was terrible. I had panic attcks with palpatations yuck! I just rode it out. Oh yea, my period lasted 8 days too-lovely! Use to 5 when I was younger. I fisnish my period and am on top of mid-cycle! My dr is clueless too. He is a great obgyn if you are preganant or need a pap smear, otherwise he is confused. I will take all his middle aged patients and get the money and live it that gated home ritzy nieghborhood he lives in
