Hi, I'm fairly new to this board and cervical dysplasia. Until a few months ago I had no idea any of these treatments and HPV even existed. First off I want to thank all of you who have posted your experiences, they really helped ease my mind about what I was going through, and made me not feel so alone.

Heres a little bit of back ground on me. I'm young, 23, and have been going for annuals yearly since I was 18. They've always come back normal, until this August, my pap came back low grade changes and they asked me to come in for further testing. So I did and the colo/bio came back with a high grade lesion. They scheduled me for a leep 2 and a half weeks ago, on my birthday no less. Happy Birthday to Me! It went well and my recovery has been moving along. I had some bleeding for three days afterwards and some minor cramps. I've been optimistic about all of this, until I talked to a nurse about my results.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me. I have yet to talk to my doctor, but I'm scheduled to see him in about another week, but I'd like to put my mind at ease before then. From everything I've read on here you want to have clear magins in your results. The nurse told me that results came back clean and cancer free and the sample went to the margins. Does that mean the margins were clear or that they weren't. I tried to ask her, but I don't think she was understanding what I was trying to ask?

Also she said when I go for my four week check up if everything is healed he'll do a pap smear. I was suprised, from what I read, isn't that to soon? I thought you should wait 3-4 months before testing?

If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it. Again thank you all for being so helpful. I couldn't have done this without the support of this board!

HI, i had a similar experience. Waiting for those leep results , i was so anxious, so that's when i started looking on the internet. learning all the lingo. margins, no margins......so i was prepared ( i thought) when the doctor called with the results) well when she called, she basically told me the same thing. no cancer, and it showed the same as colposcopy, severe dysplasia.....just have pap done again in 4 months
so basically she didn't use any of the dr terms that i read about on the internet. she tried to make it as simple as she could. i hung the phone up and was mad. so i called the office back and asked if they could just send a copy of the pathology report.
that was really helpful. it did show that i had unclear margins and had all the technical terms that you hear about on the internet, so it gives more of a comparison.
so give your drs office a call and ask them to mail you a copy of your report.
ps. i just had my 4 month follow up pap and colposcopy after cone leep and still showed severe dysplasia, so now I have to do a second leep . yuck!
good luck

The board wouldn't let me log on in the name I had so I had to sign up again.

Anyway, thank you for replying. I'm going to call and get my results sent to me. Maybe I'll understand them better. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this again. I wouldn't wish this on my worst emeny. I hope things go well for you and that they get it all this time. Keep us updated!

Does anybody else out there have any ideas if my margins are clear or not? I'd love to hear from more of you.

When You Get Your Results It Will Say If They Are Clear Or Not... Or If The Displysia Was Found To The Margin.. Hard To Say On What The Doctor Told You.. I Agree And Did The Same As The Earlier Post I Called My Drs Office And Went And Picked Up My Results And Then You Will Be Able To Tell From There .. If You Get Your Results And Still Have Questions Just Type Out What Your Results Say And Then Some Of Us Can Help More Too.. Hope That Helps Alittle

I finally got the copy of my leep results. It took them long enough. It said that the endocervical margin was clear! Yeah, finally some good news! :bouncing:

However I do have a question about something that was on the results. It says that one lesion was high grade (intraepithelial neoplasia, grade 2), and the other lesion was low grade (condyloma/intraepithelial neoplasia, grade 1). Then it says chronic cervicitis and marked thermal effect. I understand that I have two areas of lesions but what does the chronic cervicitis and marked thermal effect mean? If anyone can help me figure out what those things mean I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

my results said chronic as well and i believe it means that your cevics is inflammed (swollen) possibly infection.. you might ask your doctor about that and if it is because of infection of some sort she can give you an antibiotic to take care of that... not going to be much help on the thermal effect... im not sure what that means or even would mean... hope this little bit helps

Thank you. Does anyone know if it was inflammed due to the dysplasia? My doctor never mentioned anything about it to me, I just happened to see it on my results. At my follow up he said everything was healing and looked fine.

Also does anyone know if the thermal effect has to do with the edges of the leep? It's the only thing I can think of that makes sense.

I think the inflammation is caused by the HPV. I don't know what termal effect is. I did not get that in my post-leep biopsy but I got something like "focal tubal metaplasia" which worried me a lot. I looked on the internet and seems ok. It is just benign skin changes. My doctor was useless to explain the whole report. He just said the margins were clear. He drew a picture explaining that part, which was good but did not go into much detail. I think the thermal effect might be related to the heat used by the instrument during the LEEP but I am not a doctor so it is just pure guess. Do a search on google with the words "thermal effect"and dysplasia and look what happens.
