I have been having problems with taking my asthma medications for the past few months with irritation and my airway closing off when I try to use the inhalers. I saw my allergist today and he said that I have GERD. He said that the acid is irritating my voicebox and that when the medication hits the already sensitive voicebox it spasms. I have never had any heartburn symptoms in my life and rarely have stomach problems. He looked in my mouth and listened to my symptoms and based his diagnosis on that. This would explain why I have been having issues with strange feelings in the base of my throat and hoarseness. He told me to take prilosec OTC and follow-up with my primary care doctor (which I don't have one at the moment). Is this common to have GERD without having heartburn?

there are many symptoms of GERD. I don't have heartburn all the time either. But I do get the horseness, soar taste, burping up acid stuff and so on.

vamp36 when you say you burp up acid stuff, do you mean a taste like rotten eggs?

Yes. It is a very bad taste that I get in my throat. I am on meds now and they have helped. I still get it on bad days though! Good Luck to you. Tina

Yes! You first need to find another doctor, because he doesn't understand the entire situation. He is correct in identifying the problem - that the acid is getting so far up your esophageous that it's hitting your voicebox (larynx). This is a subset of acid reflux called laryngeal pharyngeal reflux (LPR). Your doctor should have known the name for it. It is important that you realize that standard treatment for LPR is 2 PPIs per day, not 1. A PPI is a proton-pump inhibitor. Prilosec is available OTC and is fairly cheap, BUT IT DOES NOT WORK FOR LPR!!!! You need a stronger PPI, and based on my experience, and reading many other messages on the board, I recommend that you first try prescription Nexium, and should that fail, try Protonix, then Prevacid. You also need to find a doctor who understands LPR, because it can cause horrible problems when left untreated. To get you started, my diagnosing physician (after 25 different doctors) was Eugenia Vining, in New Haven, CT. Perhaps she can recommend someone closer to your location.
