Well, been awhile since i've posted. Tried the actonel and evista as well as calcium and vit. D. My GI tract was going crazy. Doc said to stop the actonel and go with the others. I am worried that this my reduce my success of rebuilding bone.... anyone else have GI trouble. Also been having lots of joint pain. Can the actonel cause this as well?( seems like I read that in someone elses post) I am just so frustrated, and I just got started! Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Texredbird

I have not told my doctor yet But I stopped taking actonel about 3 wks ago. I took it for 1 month. Liquid Mylanta was my best friend by end of 4 wks. I kept saying my body has to get use to this....but it never did, the heartburn just got worse. Beside that i also had insomnia, joint pain and constipation. Now that I have stopped this, the end of three wks I feel like me again. My bones may be brittle but I feel human again. To think I never had any problems metion above till I started taking this stuff. I also can't take fosmax, It lower my blood pressure so much I almost passed out at work, also had severe headaches. I know my doctor not going to be happy with me, but i can't live drinking a bottle of mylanta a day...

I took actonel for one year . I have acid reflux and I am on a med for that- not only did the Actonel cause my food to start coming back up- my dexa scan showed no improvement . These drugs are not going to build or preserve bone to any extent- certainly, the side effects are probably what will get us. :)

I've been taking actonel for 15 mo. and am seriously considering stopping it. I have what I guess is acid reflux---feeling that something is constantly stuck in my throat. I have no GI pain at all, just the swallowing problem. My gynecologist (who presecribed the actonel after diagnosing osteoporosis in Feb. 2004) referred me to a gastroenterologist, who immediately scheduled an endoscopy for me---didn't suggest going off actonel for a while to see if things settled down, etc.
After doing some research and reading others' experiences, I think I may just take my chances and continue with exercise and diet and forego the actonel. I don't want to be a guinea pig for the phamaceutical companies.

Dear texredbird, I have a question about the Evista. Did you have problems with the Evista also? I am taking Evista and sometimes have leg cramps. I have noticed very few members other than Aleta and myself taking Evista. I wonder why this is? Mama Carlota

I started taking evista, I too had alot of leg cramps, joint pain and hot flashes. I stopped taking it within 2 weeks everything was back to normal. I started taking e-zorb. Found out about this from this board. Go to the web site interesting stuff.Been on e-zorb for 3 wks now. Amazing stuff, the stiffness in my hands is gone!!! I had made an appointment to see my doctor about it, but I'm thinking of canceling for it is gone. I did yard work without stopping. Also the next day, no problem. The web site states, beside helping osteoporosis, also helps alot of other problems.

 I have decided to get off the Actenol also! I was having blurry vision and stomach problems. Is there any other side effects with actenol? I heard that it causes leakage.....does that mean bladder problems?
I was also reading about liquid calcium by Innovative Natural. Has anyone heard or tried it? I have Osteoporsis of the hip and thinning of the spine.
My Bone Density test showed improvement of the hip, but the spine was worst. Please if anyone knows what else to take please let me know.

Thanks,
meemaw49

I also took actonel for 15 months and am off it now. I got tired of feeling sick all the time. No quality of life when I was on it. Now that I am off it I feel great! I guess I will have to pay the price later on but at least I am enjoying my life now.

I had been on actonel for at least 7 years and did fine with it up until about a year ago when I started having Acid Reflux. I have been on Nexuim for over a year. I have now been off actonel for 3 weeks and have been off Nexium for about 2 weeks. I have occasional stomach upsets but not like before.

Just wondering what you are doing for your osteo now that you are off Actonel. I also stopped it 4 wks. ago and have not told my dr. I REALLY do not want to take any of the biophosphonates, or anything else for that matter.

Right now I am using EZORB plus oscal. It must be working, for after seeing the dentist, he did a set of routine x-rays. His comment: wow I have noticed increase of bone growth, actonel is working. I then told him he better update my records, for I am off of actonel. He then ask what are you doing. I then told him about EZORB. He told me, that does not work. Well the proof is in the pictures. He agree. Look up the web site.

Hi, I have osteopenia and am taking actonel. I do not experience any side effects from this medication. I know that it can cause acid reflex if you lay down after taking it or do not have enough water with it. I have been on this medication for 2 and a half years. I take it once a week, first thing in the morning with a huge glass on water. After taking it, I get ready and go to work so that I do not lay down afterwards. Also, I wait 30 minutes to eat breakfast after taking it. I don't know if any of you take it at other points of the day, but you should be taking it first thing when you wake up with plenty of water. This medication has helped me drastically. I am a runner and I am young, so it is not really common for people my age to have to be on actenol, but without it I would have a lot of stress fractures. The only bad thing that is still in debate... is that it has recently been discovered that diophosphates may cause jaw death after having teeth pulled, etc... It is still under research... but I talked to my doctor and he said not to worry about it unless you are getting some serious work done on your mouth, and that it is more rare to happen than common.
