Hi Please can someone explain (in the simplest terms!) when should blood sugar levels rise and what to?

I am usually around 97.2-100.8 (5.4-5.6) ( I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but have had really bad sugar symptoms after foods, I feel incredibly sick, I feel confused and in a bubble and like I am going to collapse (I have just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's and PCOS (after waiting years) anyway after I eat about 30 mins or so later my eyes start to go funny and my blood levels go to 8.0 (144) I think they do go down to normal levels by 2 hours later but it is when they are at this level I feel bad. I also get ill when I have gone without a meal for 3 or 4 hours. I have read that this is in the normal level for blood sugar so maybe there is something else causing me to feel unwell.

Anyway let me know your thoughts!

Thanks

L

Leanne, It is not abnormal for your glucose to rise to 140-160 after a meal The marker for diabetes is how quickly can your body respond to that, producing insulin to carry the glucose out of your blood and into your cells. This should occur by the time 2 hours has passed. This is why T2 diabetics typically test 2 hours after meals.

I don't think you should assume that your symptoms are related to your glucose levels. While its possible, it's unlikely since your numbers don't appear to be abnormal.

There could be a number of things going on, especially since you have been diagnosed with Hashi and PCOS. You have to also remember that your entire endocrine system is tied together, so when addressing a thyroid disorder you may experience changes in metabolism that effect your glucose levels.

You have not mentioned what your diet is like. What exactly do you eat? How often? Do you always have symptoms with food, or is it intermittant? Have you started any new medications for your other conditions? Other changes?

I recommend that you start to keep a precise food diary. Document exactly when, what, and how much you eat. Then also document your symptoms including the time they occur. It is much easier to put some of the pieces together when you have it all written out in front of you.

I have a really good diet, ever since becoming ill.
The feeling I experience are like blood sugar problems but as I have Hashs and have now found out my cortisol levels are too low maybe the symptoms are similar.
I find i get uinwell about 30mins after a meal. I don't eat any refined sugar and eat wholegrains, fruit etc no processed junk. (I have only really modified my diet when my symptoms got really bad, since April)
