My son has a problem with his legs and we are reluctant to take
him to the doctor as he is autistic/mentally retarded.
Last Thursday he woke up and started scratching his knee.
Then in the afternoon when he got home his legs are enlarged and really
black and blue. We are wondering if he might not have been
kicked in the leg but the only problem with that is both legs
are swollen..and splotchy with black and blue on the sides..
The legs also look like they have gotten swollen..his
legs from the knees down to the ankles are discolored
and enlarged. Can any one advise me on what we should
do. I think it is bothering our son but we are hoping
that there is something we can do at home to relieve
this pain.

Take him to the doctor ASAP. He could have a serious problem.....blood clots, blockage, ...
Just because he is autistic/retarded....doesn't mean he isn't entitled to care for his problem. He isn't able to tell you what happened, You obviously don't know what it is, and it's your responsibility to seek the appropriate care for him.
I hope it's nothing serious, but at least you'll rest easy to know he's been properly taken care of.

Ditto on what Quincy said!!Can we ask why you are hesitant to bring your child to the doc when there is a very obvious problem??marcia

The most likely cause for being reluctant to take a child to the doctor is fear of being accused of child abuse. However, it is worse abuse to not give a child proper medical care.
If parents are not abusive, then I would certainly look into what happened at school. Others may have been abusive to him.
