View Full Version : Not sure if I have GERD and having problems

Okay, this is my situation. About 7 years back I started having problems with my stomach. The problems were: extremes amount of gas that would cause pain to literately make me cry, and its hard as hell to make me cry. Sharp pains when drinking anything like soda. Shortly after I kept getting a build up of phlegm in my throat, and I could NOT get rid of it. I tried drinking heavy acidic soft drinks hoping it might break it up, but nope. I tried gurgling mouth wash deep in my throat to see if it would clear, the only thing that helped would forcing myself to puke, but Id feel like **** afterwards.

The problem really only bothers me when I try to sleep, cuz as I am laying down its hard to swallow but I can breathe throught my mouth perfectly fine. And while laying down id end up coughing and going into tears and it would feel as if I was going to puke, but I never would. So I finally got temp health insurance about 1 1/2 years ago, I described my problem to like 3 doctors, really good ones too. They never heard of anyone having the problems I have had in conjunction. Only one suggested that I have acid reflux disease. But I read about ARD and i dont have all the symptoms, and I guess in GERD you get that phlegm build up and whatnot from the stomach.

Well I was prescribed Aciphex and its been working on me forever. But the other night I got sooooooo flat drunk, and I hung around animals I was allergic to, I couldn't really help it, I was at a friends party. The next day I took my meds as usual, but now it doesnt seem to be working at all. In fact I just took 2 today, and they usually work within 30 mins of consumption, and here it is 1 hour later.

My question is, do I have GERD or ARD? Is there a cure? And also can alcohol totally nullify the effects of the meds even 2 days later?

I would see your doctor again if I were you. Sometimes our bodies get use to the meds and they don't work that good no more. I was on Protonix and it worked great in the beginning. Then it just quit working all together. Now I'm on Nexium. But my dose had to be increased. Good luck to you.

This may or may not be what's wrong with you, but here's what my daughter discovered on her own when she had simular symptoms, something called fructose intolerance. Apparentely, this is some new discovery by a university which explains alot of unknown-cause type stomach problems like GERD and IBS.

SHe follows the recommended diet and has really improved. The main culprit is high fructose corn syrup, and I was surprized to learn that not only is it in soda, but in all sorts of mass-produced foods, even bread! The diet also suggests sensitivity to other sugars and some sugar substitutes as other causes along with most alchoholic beverages.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't allow much fruit; however, in time one can regain eating it as the stomach gets better.

Anyway, we have found that if you buy from the store bakery instead of the shelved, you can get baked goods and bread without the high fructose.

If you got drunk and threw up, or even had dry heaves, this can push the stomach up,causing a hiatal hernia. The meds temporarily help the symptoms but cause other problems with the bowels etc. over time.Find someone who works on hiatal hernias. It is simple to fix.
