I have 3 stones in my right kidney that are too large to come out. For the past several weeks I have had flank pain, no blood in the urine and no fever. The pain varies from mild to severe but is not constant - I called the DR office that ALWAYS reffers me to the ER - I need a urologist. If I have stones that are too big to pass will they cause pain and/or damage without any other signs?
Any advice would be great - the ER usually will tell me that they shouldn't cause me pain where they are located in the kidney.
Thank you - Erin

My husband gets kidney stones every so often. His doc told him that they don't hurt while in the kidney, but they hurt as soon as they enter the ureter. They start to block the flow of urine and the movement of the stone is painful. If they are too big to pass, they will do ultrasound therapy on it to break up the stone to powder. This proceedure is pretty painful too. My husband always says it feel like someone just pounding you in the back. They put you out for it, but that's how he feels afterward. If you do nothing to get rid of the stone while in the ureter, you can be suseptable to infection and complications. If you are feeling pain, most likely the stone has entered the ureter and you should see a urologist for x-rays.

I had a "gigantic" stone in my right kidney. (This was my dr's word for its size) It was much too large to pass on its own, and caused tremendous pain while staying in the kidney. I had lithotripsy to remove it, but don't let anyone tell you they can't cause pain while they are still in the kidney.
