I decided today to start my quit smoking routine. I got my script for welbutrin today, and I thought about going cold turkey, but don't think I can. Instead I am trying to spread out my smokes. I usually average one every 45 mins, sometimes two or three. Now I am spreading that out to every two hours if I can. I smoke the most in the car, so that will be the kicker. But, hubby and I went out to a furniture store tonight and it was the first time I didn't take my smokes with me. I would have smoked two to three on that trip. Instead of buying a carton tomorrow like I usually would, I will get a pack and try to make that last as long as possible. I know the welbutrin will take a couple of weeks to take effect, so I will work on slowing my numbers in the meantime and maybe get the inhaler or gum. Do I need a script for either? I decided to quit a month earlier than I had planned. For some odd reason, I am finding smoking not as much fun anymore, just a stupid habit like biting my cuticles or popping a zit (sorry if that was gross). But, you know what i mean. So, please, everyone cross your fingers for me, and if you have any advice to send my way, please do!

I am doing really well so far! Yesterday I only smoked four cigs, and I made one pack last two days. I am going to shoot for three days next. It is much easier than I thought it would be. I leave them in the car so I don't have them right there looking at me all day. When I drive, I try to smoke only one during a round trip. So, we'll see.

Hi Mel, first of all I want to congratulate you on your decision to quit. I was forced to make my decision. Wish I had been smarter. I haven't smoked since Aug and have done it with Wellbutrin and Nicoderm CQ. The Wellbutrin and patches are working great. I still get urges but a piece of sugarless gum helps get passed it. Good luck..Mama Kay

I am very pleased with myself, and thank you both for checking in with me! I was smoking my last one out of a pack on Friday, on my way to Wal-Mart, when a thought occured to me. It wasn't going to make it any easier to quit by cutting down. It was easy to cut from a pack to six a day, but anything less was too hard. I decided the best thing to do was just QUIT. So, I didn't buy a pack that day. I did smoke two on Sat night when we were out for Halloween, but I actually didn't care for them. and, had no desire when we left to smoke. My hubby and I both had two, then left the pack there. I haven't smoked since, so it has been almost 48 hours complete without one puff. I honestly don't think the two I had should count, cause it just didn't feel the same, but that is okay.
I think I am done-I am a little pissy today, but I am also stressed b/c I am on disability with my back and may have surgery (yet another reason to quit). Got a lot going on. My husband is so proud of me, as welll as the rest of my fam. My sister will be so proud-she is coming to Vegas this week to see me, and it will be the first time in ten years I won't smoke! Will keep you updated on my progress! Lovin' the sugarless bubble gum and tootsie pops!

Still not smoking!! It has been over 10 days now. It does get easier. I am only using the wellbutrin. I did use tootsie pops and sugarless bubble gum to help with the urges. I am gaining a little weight, but I know I can lose it pretty quick once I know the habit is kicked. Sometimes I get the urge bad-usually when I am around a lot of smoke-but, it seems for the smell of it. Other times I am just bored. I am getting to the point where some of it stinks now especially when I am trying to eat. It embarrasses me! I feel bad now for all the times others had to smell my smoke.
Anyway, Like I said, still doing well. If I can do it, anyone can! I used to think it would be the end of the world if I quit, but now I know better. And to be honest, it was a lot easier than I thought! Thanks for checking in with me-I will keep you updated, and good luck to the rest of you!!!

Hello all. First post

A few days behind you Mel but I am on my 5th day. Sort of cold turkey but I have half of a 2mg gum in my mouth at moment . The first one. I do not think I needed that much after getting through 4 days without anything, i feeling a bit :dizzy:

Have tried a number of times but more determined now than ever.

Way to go, Mel and Toneighty! Keep this great quit going strong! :)

cheers for that, just finished a quarter of a 2mg gum - that did the job. Last time I tried to give up I was using 10 pieces a day and still suffered. Using postive thoughts this time. Works alot better - and its free :D

Deda
11-13-2004, 03:24 PM
ahhh yes, positive thoughts are so good, and seem to help more than anything, don't they? Sounds like you're on the right track to staying smoke-free. Right on...

On my 6th day. Have a few cravings today, but nothing bad enough to light up. I am trying my hardest to not put that quarter of nico gum into my mouth that I left yestarday. But that is not the biggest problem in the world.

I read a few families web pages today who had a member die from smoking. I will be using their websites every time I get a strong urge.

I will not allow people to make a profit to kill me - NO MORE SMOKES

Just read a few other pages about deaths from smoking. My above craving stopped. I do not need to put that quarter of 2mg gum into my mouth now.

Just had a horrible taste in my mouth/throat...tarish taste. Lungs are working

Five days, 2 hours, 45 minutes and 10 seconds. 86 cigarettes not smoked, saving £9.56. Life saved: 7 hours, 10 minutes.

Good for you, toneighty...sounds like you are doing a good job using mind over matter. The first few months that I quit, I went to those websites and read some of those same painful stories, and it did put a lot of fear in me, which was good. (I needed it). Also, the lung cancer board on this site helped strenghthen my resolve as well. Sometimes we need a good scare when we are trying to quit.
Keep working hard at it, you are doing great.

Thx for the reply. The scare stories are scary.

Just come back from my step brothers place after having a small glass of beer. Normally a very big trigger but coped ok. Than just sat down to use the telephone and just a major crave came on and I automatically reached for the place where My cigs are normally. Than realised what I was doing and just with aggression shouted NO. Crave stopped. :)

Still have a few days left before I go back to work. should be ok.

Will look at the lung cancer board. Thx for that.

Five days, 7 hours, 29 minutes and 34 seconds. 90 cigarettes not smoked, saving £9.93. Life saved: 7 hours, 30 minutes.

Just read some of the stories on the Lung Cancer board. Very useful but it could be read a bit too much. Will use it but only when I am craving and need to get my mind of it.

I think the board will be useful when I am working the long nights this next week. Keeps your mind occupied and focussed.

I am rattling on here for no other purpose other than passing time so I am not "concentrating" on the cigs.

This post probably makes no sense at all but its working :)

My cold has virtually gone to which I owe a great deal to. Thx virus - you got me through the first 3/4 days with relatively few problems

Five days, 9 hours, 16 minutes and 28 seconds. 91 cigarettes not smoked, saving £10.07. Life saved: 7 hours, 35 minutes.

I will not allow someone to profit while giving me cancer. NO WAY

Just realised that I am very very tired. Not sure if its relating to having just a little cold or the lack of cigs. I would normally be awake until at least 3am but its only 20.57

Went to town today and felt fine. Came in and suffered a bit, but again mind won. It only lasted a couple of minutes and it was easily manageable.

No More Disgusting Smoke. :nono:
Six days, 50 minutes and 14 seconds. 102 cigarettes not smoked, saving £11.28. Life saved: 8 hours, 30 minutes.

102 cigs not smoked  takes about 7 puffs on ciggy

102 * 7 =714

714 chances that I have prevented myself getting Cancer

looking into last few days it seems that this is my dairy and a bit self obsessed. I do not mean to be but its just focus the mind and keeps the determination going, it works. Just hope more people take the quit step and start posting more.

It feels wonderful, toneighty!, thanks for asking. It gives me a new confidence in my general well being and health. I no longer spend idle moments worrying that I have (or am going to get lung cancer). I can walk 3-4 miles a day with ease, and enjoy doing it! I no longer have to hang my head in shame that I'm the only smoker at some social event, or try to hide my smoking. And I don't have to listen to my kids and well meaning friends lectures any more! I smell good, and I'm not wasting tons of money. I also don't have to lie to my Dr's anymore! LOL! I could go on and on, but bottom line is, I'm really happy that I no longer smoke!!!!! :) :D Sweet happy life!

Excellent stuff, would you like to change places with me :jester:

In the last hour I have had a few twinges. Not been dramatic or anything but they have been there. Luckily I have a big bag of sweets next to me. While chomping on the hard sweets my twinges go for that moment and after a few sweets the total crave goes.

Not sure if being single is harder or easier on the quitter. At times boredom  could bring the twinges on but at least when they are here I can hide in a corner, come on the PC and type, have no stressful situations ie being nagged :D etc but then again no one to keep my mind occupied.

Still wheezing a bit, not sure its the after effects of my cold or the healing process. I will look on it as the healing process.

Was suppose to go out tonight but as some of my friends smoke and being in the pub environment - do not think it is a particularly good idea.

Six days, 7 hours, 37 minutes and 15 seconds. 107 cigarettes not smoked, saving £11.81. Life saved: 8 hours, 55 minutes.

update: struggling a bit, as mentioned before, I think it is partly to do with the nicotine gum I had on Saturday. Even though it was not much it was still some. I know that if I had that last quarter of gum, which I left, would stop the pangs but it will only drag my addiction on....going to take some deep breaths....just walked around a bit....going to have to sign off. I am thinking of smoke going into my lungs. bbl.

Just sorted some washing out. Feeling better again. If I was at work I think a piece of gum would have been placed in my mouth.

Hang tough, toneighty, those cravings are the norm at first, but after a couple weeks they will lessen greatly. :nono:
Now I don't know about being single or married/in relationship making it easier/harder. I'm alone so much, as my dh works a lot. I think sometimes it IS easier spending more time alone, less stress dealing with other people, their habits, quirks, etc., or visa versa, him having to deal with me. My kids are grown, so that helps lessen stress issues that I had in earlier years when I quit.

Don't worry too much about that wheezing. I think some people get that in the early stages after quitting, but that should soon clear up. Do you go walking? Great for the lungs! Drawing in all of the fresh air, deep into my lungs, feels great!

Now I think you are being very sensible in avoiding the pub scene, for a while anyway. I ruined many good quits when I was younger due to going out with friends and having a beer or 2! Not worth it, and you would regret it so much if you lost your resolve just for a single smoke, which always turns into another! 6 days is SUCH A GREAT START!!!!! Keep strong... and you sound pretty smart about it all! :)
Best!

Hi again :)

Thanks for all of that. I only walk sometimes, mainly in the early hours when I finish work. About 3 miles. Not really a pleasant walking area where I live but I think that if I have another crave attack like that one, I will go out.

I heard on other sites that do not change the way you live, ie going out but I do not think its a good idea going to the pub. To many people/friends there smoke. Its just so easy to say yes, especially after one or two. Last time I tried I managed to go to the pub at the start but it was very very hard and ended up drinking somewhat more than normal :dizzy: I think I will buy a bottle of wine or a few beers in a couple of weeks to drink at home to just got use to that part.

Thx again for your post, feeling a lot lot better. :)

Think that's a good plan, toneighty, stayin' away from thr pubs tonight, and getting your own wine, beer, to try out at home.

Now, I haven't heard that myself about not changing anything in your life, but for myself, it was necessary. I couldn't talk on the phone for long hours with friends as I did before. It was too stressful, as I was used to chain-smoking during that time. Now, I can hardly stand to talk on the phone for more than 15 minutes or so, I get so restless, I can't sit still. And I did have to add an exercise program to my daily activities, it really helps with the stress, and helps keep the weight gain down. One thing I'm sure that wouldn't have worked for me, neighty, would have been going, (at first) to places with lots of smoking, and I don't know even today if I would be able to drink. (I quit that many years ago) Drinking always ruined my quits. But that was *Me*, doesn't mean everyone. Not long after this quit, I started going back to my favorite Casino. I was wearing a patch at the time. Now when I go, I avoid sitting right next to smokers, which is easy most of the time, we outnumber them! :D
I think by now, I could even handle being in a bar, if I had to. But I avoid second hand smoke as much as those people that used to get on my nerves so badly!!! LOL :)
Take care toneighty, whatever you choose to do, use caution. :nono:
And I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better.

I am happy to see we are all doing well! I am still smoke free, and it just amazes me sometimes. I get the crave a lot, but it is easy to overcome. I haven't gone out yet (like for a drink and dancing for exp), but I think as long as I stay busy I will be fine. I am finding though, every day that goes by, smoke from cigs smells worse and worse. I live in Vegas, so everywhere you go there it is. I was out today and had to hold my breath when walking past a smoker. Never have done that before.
Just be careful for those of you who use the gum. A lady I work with quit smoking two years ago, but still chews the gum all day. Sure, she quit smoking, but now she spends even more moolah on the gum!
A while back I made the DECISION to be smoke free by my 27th birthday-after ten years of smoking. well, Tomorrow is November 16-my birthday. And I quit three weeks early!

A while back I made the DECISION to be smoke free by my 27th birthday-after ten years of smoking. well, Tomorrow is November 16-my birthday. And I quit three weeks early!

Hey Mel...Happy 27th SMOKE FREE Birthday!!!! :jester: You did it! And this will be the best present you could ever give yourself!!! :nono:

Yes, those Casinos are fulla smokers, aren't they? The one we go to, (in Northern NV) is a smaller casino, and gets an older crowd, so the ratio of smokers/nonsmokers is not as bad. I see in Reno they have a casino with a whole huge non smoking section. i would like to go play there sometime, but we always go to this place, (S. of Reno) as it's our favorite.

That is SO good that the smell of cig smoke is making you sick too. That's a great sign that you are through with smoking and all the bad that goes with it. I can honestly say that this is my first quit, (and I've quit at least 10 X), where the smell of smoke is repulsive to me now. In my past quits, I would smell the smoke and my first thought would be, "oh my gosh, I want a cig SO bad!!!" Now I try to get away from it, it's so gross! The last time I was there a few weeks ago, (with 2 friends who have quit themselves a few years ago), and this guy comes up near us smoking a cigar! The smell was SO bad, and SO intense, that it was giving me a bad headache. We cashed out our machines and took off for the other side of the place, but I could still smell it all night, don't have any idea why!? But I'm grateful to be at this point! 3 weeks is so great! Good for you, Mel! You deserve a an extra treat for your birthday, girl! ((((Mel))))

My son's birthday is Wed. (31) Lucky for him, he never smoked. He was always on my case to quit, so was my daughter! They are happy now...
Have a wonderful, fun birthday, and celebrate your quitting while you're at it!
Keep in touch!
Deda
PS~My hubby is like that lady you work with. It will be 2 years in March that he quit, and he still chews the nic gum. He loves it! Oh well...at least he's NOT smoking! ;)

Hi Deda and Mel

Deda, a few of us planned to go out with some old friends who we have not seen for a while on the 4th DEC. But said that if I am not smoking at that point its very unlikley I will be going.

Yes, at least your hubby is not smoking, by far the worst devil - all of them gases and tar not hitting his lungs. But that does tie into something I am going to mention later in this post.

All the best to you Mel. Glad you are doing well. Sorry that I have taken over your thread :D

...........

Its 8.48 GMT. One point through the night I awoke needing some nicotine. At least a few minutes than went back to sleep. Awoke this morning and not sure if that was a dream or not

When I woke up this morning something occurred to me, which I have not mentioned much before. These craves I have been having, even the one I wanted smoke into my lungs  - I was not trying to go to the shop and buy cigs. NO I was trying to prevent myself not putting gum into my month. That would have cured the crave.

Gum has helped Deda to quit but I have tried about five times with gum. A few times I have got to the stage that I stopped using them. However I battled some what harder over a period of time with using gum than I am now. I am on my eighth day as such and I am suffering a lot less now than when I have used gum in the past.

The reason why my head was very :dizzy: on Saturday when I used gum was because I already got rid of all of the nicotine in my system. I was on my 5th day and took nicotine. That’s almost like giving a never-smoker nicotine. Even a quarter of a 2mg gum was making me :dizzy:

Any crave that I have/will experience is not craving cigs but nicotine. I could cure the crave with a small bit of gum. Only problem is that I am not sure where that will leave my quit. Taking more gum?

I have never felt so good about myself then I do now. Its bizarre. I am quitting the most addictive drug and feel good about myself. This is solely because I have the right attitude to quit now. I am not saying that this will continue, but I do not feel sorry for myself, feel that I am fighting directly the crave (just telling it to go away).

When I have relapsed before I did not say to myself NO MORE CIGS EVER but that’s where my mind is at now.

I did not set out to go cold turkey - it just turned out that way due to a very nice virus :D that gave me the cold. I did not suffer the first 3/4 days in agony.

Anyway, I have awoke with NO need for nicotine. I am only on my 8th day.

Update:11.23am gmt. Unlike yestarday I only have a very very slight urge to smoke/take nicotine - a background feeling.

People are rubbing their hands with profits out of manufacturing human poison.

Evening Deda,

From Staffordshire (Middle of England)

We do have a lot of idle moments on our night shift. Part of the reason why I work it :D.

We do take many smoke breaks as our main bosses are not in :blob_fire . What I have read about smoking and the USA - you are ahead of us Brits in giving up but we are improving. So thereby we still do have many smokers, in fact in the younger people 16-24 year olds the numbers have actually increased in recent years. We have many people of that age working where I do, but mainly in the day. We have pc facilities in our break areas so I probably just sit and use one of them. Just avoid going outside but its winter now so cold/wet here anyway.

We have just heard today that most pubs, all resturants etc will ban smoking by 2006 in England. In Scotland they have already stated they will issue a total ban in public places. I do not agree with the policy but in the long run, if it encourages me to quit, its fine by me.

NO MORE DEATH STICKS

Update: another crave came on, still not unmanageable, but it/is there. I could resolve this easily by taking a quarter of nicotine gum...but I have come this far on cold turkey - I will try my very hardest to make the quit stay cold turkey.

One week, 13 hours, 28 minutes and 56 seconds. 128 cigarettes not smoked, saving £14.14. Life saved: 10 hours, 40 minutes.

Hey toneighty...

I had to LOL when you said that you guys take many smoking breaks as your main bosses aren't in! When I was working and our supervisor was out, we smokers did take advantage of it! She hated smoking, and was always trying to lay down the law on us smokers! We had lots of trees out in the parking lot that we could hide behind! LOL! What a bunch of extreme addicts we were!! Sick! Yes, I read on my start page today of Britian's new smoking ban. Here in CA they have been banning smoking in public places for quite a while now. And it was good for me when I quit smoking. I think it has actually helped a lot of people decide to quit smoking, which is a good thing! I think in time, you will see less smokers over there as well. I read on the Net just the other day, that the big tobacco companies have spent more than they ever have in the past 2 years on advertising, yet they have still lost on profits. I say that's cool! I hope someday they are all put out of business! I doubt that will ever really happen though, but it's a nice thought, isn't it?

Hang in there with those cravings! Keep your mind busy, or your hands! They will soon come less and less. You are doing fine my dear! :nono:

Hi Deda

Our supervisor is the most guilty :D He smokes the most.

Its 5.25am (GMT) just come back from work. It was no problem...except at just after 12am. Got the urge for nicotine. I did carry the gum with us but, as mentioned before, I concentrated not taking the gum - the cigs was a distant thought. I went on anti smoking websites, read a far bit and the nicotine crave disappeared.

I am not that far off completing nine days and cigs feel like a distant memory - nicotine is still there but the cigs are not.

One of the smokers came passed me tonight. He just been out for a smoke. He stank. :p I normally smell it when someone just had a cig but he really did reek of it. Either my nose has improved or the displeasure of the smell has hit home now - or both. :)

I have not counted but this past day/night I must have had about 4 craves. Only one was of any sort of strength but even that was just a summer breeze.

Off to bed now.

Deda

4 cravings in one day, (with only one strong one) is not too bad. Is that improved from 1 week ago? You are doing a most excellent job in fending off those craves, you know that? :D Keep it up!
And your sense of smell is kicking back in...so glad it reeked for you! That's a good sign, and remember... that's how bad we used to reek. Not a very nice way for a gal to smell now, is it? Now when I put on my perfume, I know it's not being covered up with smelly smoke, and my lipcolor stays put too. :nono:

I am a boy :D LOL

4 cravings in one day, (with only one strong one) is not too bad. Is that improved from 1 week ago?

Not really sure as I never thought about the amount of craves that hit but I would have thought so. I have tried to give up 5-6 times before but this is the easiest time. Just four in a day - on my 9th day - just wished everyone tried to give them up and kill this business.

Anyway woke up today feeling good, may even get my running shoes on and run a marathon.....mmmm may be not, will try that tomorrow :jester:

I see this board is read a fair bit so I hope you are all doing well and....

Okay, same thing applies, just not the lipcolor thing! I'm grateful that my DH smells so wonderful now, not stinky like before! Not a very beconing feature for any of us, reeking like cig smoke!
I'm glad for you that you are doing so great, especially given the fact that you work with quite a few smokers. Are you doing okay there? You are strong!
YES, I agree with you, toneighty, I wish everyone out there that smokes would take the plunge and just give it up! I always think that if I could quit, anyone could quit. I smoked like a dang chimney, one after another. I would even go out into the garage and have one in the middle of the night, if I woke up to use the bathroom.. :nono: Now that's an addict! We all think it's TOO hard for us, before we quit, that we won't be able to do it, that we're sure to fail...then we surprise ourselves and discover that we are a lot stronger than we gave our selves credit for. It all depends on how strong our determination is to succeed. I was very determined this time, due to aquiring a chronic health problem. But I wish I had been smarter and had done this when I was younger, like you. Of course I did try. They say that for most people it takes several attempts at quitting before we get it right. I think we learn something new with every quit too. :)
Never too late though...so if anyone's reading this who thinks they cannot do it, I say, try it, YOU CAN DO IT. :nono:
Sorry neighty about thinking you were a girl. You have one of those unisex usernames! LOL!!!
You have a great day!!!

Yep Deda, I will pass on the Lipcolo(u)r just would not know how to put it on. :D

I would even go out into the garage and have one in the middle of the night

mmm, not sure that I have ever done that, but just goes to show that this quitting stuff can be done.

So all of you PEEPS out there QUIT

I forgot to mention, last night I was nagging one of the smokers. Told him that when he lights up how does he know that the next puff is not going to kill him - I have quit 9 days and nagging already :)

I hope your illness is not causing you too much problems.

Just a quick question what does DH stand for? I know who it is but not what it stands for. Its bugging me now.

Not much to report today except had one fairly long nicotine thought but again after doing one or two things I soon forgot about it.

Okay Arnold...but please change the moniker, as I'm not a fan! LOL!!! :)

DH stands for dear hubby, or dam_ hubby, depending on how he's behaving at that time. (he's a dear right now). LOL!

My health is much better these days, thank you for asking. I'm not all the way back, but I'm getting much better. I'm sure giving up the smokes, and a whole new healthy lifestyle had a lot to do with it. :)

You are awesome, gently prodding others there at your workplace to give em up, well, okay, being a pain in the a$$ and nagging people, whatever! You keep it up, and you may start a trend there! I know every time I quit, one or two of my friends will see how great I'm doing, and then they want to give it a go. But we all know, it has to be soley for our own personal reasons. I have quit too many times in the past to please others, (my kids) only to go a while and end up falling off the wagon. This time I did it soley for mysef and my own personal reasons, nobody elses, and it's working. I spent many times in the past feeling so sorry for myself, feeling so deprived. But this time I don't feel that way! I feel like I've been given a gift of sorts, and for that I am truly grateful. :)

I better go, things to do now. Need my walk, but it's raining, so out to the garage I go to walk on my treadmill! :bouncing: If you ever need some instruction in lipstick application, give me a holler!!! LOL!!!!
Ciao!

Thanks for the birthday wishes!!! I am still going strong and it is so awesome. I still miss it, and sometimes I want to smoke, but really, the urge isn't so bad. It is really the habit still. It is like I have to remind my body that I quit. Oh, and don't worry tonieghty, you are welcome to take over as much as you want! This is not only for me, but for anyone!

Deda

You're welcome, Mel! Yes it is still the habit, but later you'll hardly miss them, so keep going. Just keep busy, and you'll be alright!

Toneighty, where are you? Hope you're still doing okay. I posted above, yesterday.

Have a great weekend you two! :)

Hi Deda

I am back to work with a vengeance now so have limited time to post. I only work 4 day week but long hours and they do cram days together - I am working 5 days in trot now. Which basically means go work, come home, go bed, get up, go work.

Anyway, still off the cancer sticks. But I do not want to weigh myself :D.

Okay Arnold...but please change the moniker, as I'm not a fan! LOL!!! :) I will call myself Rambo :)

DH stands for dear hubby, or dam_ hubby, depending on how he's behaving at that time. (he's a dear right now). LOL!

He must be stuck in the kitchen then :D If he has a pizza in the oven tell him I am on my way over :)

Glad you are better and feeling well. You are putting me to shame with the exercise. Most I got was walking to the pub, and now I cannot even do that as I do not want to start on the cigs again.

Better sign off and get some sleep. Even though you have encouraged me on here and its very much appreciated Deda, but I really do need to turn down your very kind and thoughtful offer -
If you ever need some instruction in lipstick application, give me a holler!!! LOL!!!!

Not sure they will appreciate that at work, especially it being a male dominated job :D :jester:

Bye for now, I will still be reading the board but may have time limits on when I can post.

Keep going All

Okay, I can handle Rambo! LOL!!

Wow, that surprised me...1 week and 3 days, already. Time goes so fast, toneighty. In the ealrly days of my quit, i felt like it would take forever to get to the one year mark, and then before I knew it, it was here. I think of alllll of those nasty cigs I would've smoked. I smoked at least a pack a day, and some days close to two. That's a bunch of cancer sticks, that's for sure.

Sounds like all you do for those 4 days is work, sleep, work. That's nice tho that you can look forward to a 3 day weekend every week. I know that in England it's very common to hang out with your friends at the local pub. That must be hard for you, missing out on that. I do commend you for being so focused on staying quit. It would be hard right now to be among all of those smokers, just downright high risk for you, this early in the game. I remember when I was in my early 20's (1979 or so) and had quit for a year and then went out with our friends to the NCO club, (military club we belonged to) and many of my pals were smoking. (the percentage of smokers back then was much higher than today) I bummed "just one" off a friend. Then another, then another...I woke up the next morning craving them as if I had never quit! Got in my car and made a beeline for the store. One year, down the tubes! :( That was so stupid of me. I didn't have much good sense back then. You, you sound like you're high on common sense! Way to go...

Yes, I can't beleive how I've gotten into this good habit of walking every day. (Tended to be a couch potatoe when I smoked) Now today, I skipped my walk. Was a little tired, and it was windy, and I hate wind. Tomorrow if it's nice I will go to the park to walk. I have a treadmill, but so much prefer to be outdoors. The temps are still pretty good, in the mid 60's, but soon will be getting a lot colder, and lots more rain. I hate winter! Then I'll have to force myself to walk indoors.

You keep up the great work, neighty. And no, DH hasn't been in the kitchen...I wish! Oh, I forgot, he did make pancakes this morning, but the cooking is usually left to me, Deda.
Take care,
Deda :)

Deda

mel...don't worry about a little weight gain, (you too toneighty), :nono:. Quitting smoking is more important than 5 or 10 or even 15 lbs. You will lose it later! If you have enough willpower to quit, well, later a little weight loss will be easy.
When are you having surgery, Mel? Good luck with that.

thanks Deda, I am not worrying too much about the wait, but it still sucks! (okay, I know it is so much better to stop smoking...)
I don't know when I will have surgery, we are hoping for the second week of December. I will let you know, thanks for asking!

Time has gone quick, not far off two weeks :) I walked home this morning from work, it was a bit wet and cold but it was a great walk. Just reflecting on how good I feel about myself in giving up, how in 12 days that I have turned from a smoker to someone who is so very confident in quitting for good. I thought about the amount of cigs that I have smoked, the control it really has on a person, the planning of when your next smoke is to when you need to get another pack of death sticks. "have I got a lighter" "how many left" "better have two now..." so much planning. I was looking at the people who were going on smoke breaks at work and how controlled they were and realising that was me just 12 days ago. It seemed like they were asking every half hour.

I have been addicted to these things for 15 years but within 12 days of mental readiness and determination I know this addiction will end. I have quit a lot longer than this but I have never been so certain. A lot of cigs have been smoked but a lot more cigs could have been smoked.

Still some major hurdles to overcome. I have sorted the work one out but it is going out to the pub with friends and saying NO. I have failed twice when been to a friends place with some beers and had one, then two...that is going to be a problem but before I was not thinkig about becoming chained up again, this time I know not to take a cancer stick.

..............

Deda, give me a shout next time when the pancakes are on ;)

The above is mainly thoughts to myself and reference in a month or two's time. Had to post it quickly, so if any dodgy spelling mistakes please forgive me :D and if I have missed a question sorry but... going bed very tired, eyes are shutting. 06.02am GMT

Just a quick hello from work. The last few days have been the easiest. Just 3 nicotine thoughts a day but they went very quickly. It is a lot more painful when you are a smoker between cigs than after 2 weeks of not having one.

Only 4 more hours to go and off for three days :)

Deda

Toneighty-

Three nicotene thoughts in a day is not bad at all! See (other people out there) how soon things start calming down? I think a big factor in that is that you were/are so determined not to smoke again, to make this quit a successful one. That is so great!
And you are right, I think it was more totureous when I was smoking, to wait 2 or 3 hours for a smoke, than it was a week or two AFTER I quit! You are doing super! :nono:
My DH and I went Christmas shopping tonight. We were in this one store for about 3 hours, and boy, were we ever tired when we got done. When we walked out of the store, there was a guy smoking outside the door, and for the first time in a very long time, it smelled so good to me. For a second there, I wished I could sit down on the bench out there, and just relax with a smoke. (I used to sit on that very bench out there and puff away whenever I came out of that store). But of course, I forgot about it really fast, went to our car and put everything in the trunk, and headed home! And I didn't think about it again! That poor fella, probably wishes HE could quit!!!
It's great to hear that you are still smoke free, AND doing so well with it.
You have a wonderful Thanksgiving, neighty! :)

Deda, I know exactly what you mean!! I used to go crazy if I couldn't smoke in the car, or get a quick one in at the airport between flights and other times. I mean, I would get anxious and figgity! I also will smell it lightly sometimes too and want to light up, but like you said, I forget the urge as quickly as it comes on.
One thing, if I am in a place with lots of smoke, it really makes me sick now and it feels hard to breath. Like today, we were in a restaurant that doesn't have a non-smoking section (ok, bar and grill) and I actually told my husband and his mom that we had to leave b/c the smoke was bothering me (we had just finished eating, but he wanted to hang out for a bit). I am going on a month on the 27 of November. It is a pretty neat feeling. For the rest of you-keep up the good work! And ditto on the Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Deda and Mel

have almost convinced a work colleague to give up. He said he will try next week. Just mentioned that he suffers a lot more than I do in needing a cig. Also scared him a bit and said his next puff could be the one that’s eventually kills him. He is only 22. It got him thinking.

...And I didn't think about it again! That poor fella, probably wishes HE could quit!!!
Good point. I think I will work with that thought if need be. :)

Nothing much to report, except that I seem to be sleeping better. As I work nights it can be a bit of a problem getting enough sleep but seem to have a good eight hours instead of the 5-6  I was getting before. May have nothing to do with the smoking but will see what happens from saturday onwards as I have a six day stint.

Happy thanksgiving. Not something we Brits tend to celebrate as its a USA thing for the 4th Thursday in Nov (see I have been studying :p lol) Have a good one.

hi mel- -

That's right, you're in Vegas huh? It's weird when we go out to eat in NV and they still have smoking sections. Last year before I quit, we were at Sizzler over there, and we sat in smoking section, and we were the only ones sitting in there! I was so terrible. My dh had already quit for months, and here I was smoking and having him sit in smoking section. I'm lucky he even sat there with me! But yeah, the smoke does make me feel a little sick now. Just can't stand the smell at all! But that's good. And that's good that you are already feeling that way, as it took me a while to start hating it. You are doing great girl, one month tomorrow....GO MEL!! :nono:
Take care, and keep in touch...

Hey there toneighty...

That is so cool that he wants to quit smoking. Especially since he's only 22. I wish I would've quit when I was that young. I believe it would have been easier. Of course at the time, I thought I had tons of time to quit. Didn't really believe it was bad for me either, till I got older. Are you still in your twenties? You are setting a great example for all of your smoking coworkers. That's awesome neighty, and it will help you too.

I forgot when I wished you a happy Thanksgiving that you were in England. Well, I know ya celebrate Christmas, so I wish you a Merry Christmas!! :p

Yes, I know working nights is bad for our sleep rhythems, (sp?) my DH works night shifts, (swingshift here). By the time he drives home, (30 min) takes shower, brushes teeth, etc, he gets to bed at about 2 AM. We don't get up in AM till around 9. I stay up to wait for him, but I'm a niteowl anyways these days, as I don't work now. Sounds like you work graveyard shift, that's rough. Well, try to get your 7 or 8 hours of sleep anyway. You need it. But I know that's still gotta be tough, staying awake all night. Do you drink coffee to help you stay awake? I hope you make it through your upcoming 6 day stint without much loss of sleep. Hang in there neighty...but I know you are tough...you quit smoking!!
take care neighty..

Hi Deda

Do not know that he will give it a go. He does not seem focussed enough to do it but at least he is thinking about it.

In my early thirties, but like everyone, still feel 21

Did you have a good day yestarday? hope you saved me some left overs :bouncing: :D

I did choose the graveyard shift as more cash :) , less work :D , less hassle :p etc but it can be antisocial. However it is easy on the cessation. The six day stint is not nice but I do have six days off afterwards which is :bouncing:

I drink coffeee at work in the bucket loads. We have a coffee machine which is about to start smoking soon - its overworked. :D

Two weeks, three days, 13 hours, 36 minutes and 10 seconds. 298 cigarettes not smoked, saving £32.85. Life saved: 1 day, 50 minutes.

Do not drink coffee at home but as I have to keep awake all night to get me back into the night thing I am going to make some now as i am  . Its only 01.00am need to stay up until at least 06.00am

neighty...

I get a real kick out of your little phrases, so cute..I wish I knew you in person! :D The one about the coffee machine is about to start smoking...hehehe. I laughed, as I know when I worked I could drink pots of coffee all day. And I smoked a lot back then as well. I had to cut my coffee intake due to having acid reflux. It's much better now, but I don't want to overdue it, and have it return. When I do drink it, I water it down, 1/2 and 1/2. Better than none, as for a few months it was so bad, I had to stop drinking it completely. Can give up the ciggies, but the coffee is my favorite vice--I have to have a little bit! And if I had to stay up all night like you, well, I'd be slugging it down too.

Yesterday was nice. Just my hubby and our son, (31 like you) came over. (Daughter and her DH live on East Coast) Had a great turkey dinner and then watched NBA game. My son is coming over tonight after work to watch the Laker's/King's game with me...GO KING'S!!!! :D There's plenty of leftovers, so stop by and I'll fix you a plate, and I'll even throw in a piece of pumpkin pie! (If you like it!) ;)

Why don't you hook your co-worker up to this here message board? Tell him to go to some of the websites and read the stories about what smoking can do to him...might scare him enough, he'll change his mind! That stuff is really scarey!!! Weren't you and I talking about that one website before? I can't remember the name of it at the moment.

So what do you do at work, neighty, data processing? Sounds like you do your work on a computer. My son is a manager at such a place, and is an editor. I always wonder how he can sit there all day without his back aching. I have to get up and move around often, or get backaches and stiff knee. Were you already at work when you posted last?

Wow, 6 days on, 6 days off...sounds like a good deal! I wish my hubby could do that. A person could take a vacation for 6 days. :)

Have you been back to the pubs, at all? You're such a good quitter, neighty! :P
Ciao!

NEVER had pumpkin pie!?? I can't believe it...but then again, I guess they don't grow pumpkins over there, huh? Oh, you would LOVE it! It's SO delicious! It's mouth-watering good! If you ever come over here, you MUST try it! :)

You are TOO funny...tastes better when it's free! :P hehehe....sounds like my hubby. He LOVES to get anything for free! And he will overindulge, just because it is.

Your job sounds SO awesome! Give me a job like that! Only drop the football, I don't care for that. Love NBA the best, then major league baseball, (LA Dodger's), and I also love pro ice skating.

Well, son is here and game time is almost here. Will you be watching this one? I love NBA, it's so exiting, fast paced, ever changing, sometimes a good brawl...just kiddin'. :) You get my drift..you are very lucky to have copped a job like that, indeed. And sit back and drink all that coffee too! You hit the jackpot with that job, neighty.

Awesome... I can't believe you have stayed awy from the pubs all of this time. Way to go, neighty. I think you have this thing licked. But NEVER take it for granted. We are all so vulnerable, at certain times, more than others. But, I think you know this now, don't you?

take care, off to the game now..

Hello Deda

I do believe we do grow pumpkins but its mainly used for halloween not to eat  , I have not even tasted pumpkin.

On your recommendation I will see if we have pumpkin pie in the shops. I cannot say I have seen it but these supermarkets now sell almost anything. I will have a look next time I go on my food shopping in a couple of weeks.

Us males know a good thing when its free. Up to a certain time of night the coffee is made for us and brought to our desks :p .

I will not be watching tonight as I do not have access to the channels that would show it at home. I did see the Detroit game the other night where all hell let loose. That was very funny. But I would not be wasting my food and drink on any player. Its all for my stomach. :)

I have had some jobs in my short time but it is by far the best one, I do not get paid a fortune but enough to live on and I do not :( when I go in. I agree with you about the football. I did like the baseball season, the basketball is ever changing - I cannot believe how many games are within a point or two after all of them goals/hoops (still learning the US sport language :p ). I have not seen any of the NHL, due to the strike, which is a shame. The football, however, I tend to just look at the game now and again.

Hope you are having a good evening and come on you KINGS :) As I am typing I can see (via the espn web scoreboard) they are winning.

Not been pub still :( but health comes first.

Bye for now

If I was in work would have watched the Miami @ Detroit and memphis@maryland games. Them games are shown here tonight.

Its 51 - 48 for the kings at moment.

Hello Deda

Us males know a good thing when its free. Up to a certain time of night the coffee is made for us and brought to our desks :p .

Hey toneighty...

Kings win, 109-106! :D We rule!

Now that job of yours keeps on sounding better and better...they bring coffee to your desks!? Who, waitresses? :p You're going to get too spoiled over there! You forgot to answer my previous question...do the smokers have to smoke outside there, or do they have a smoking/break room for them to use? I was just wondering, as I know it's so cold and wet there, and no smoking bans, such as what we have here in CA.

Are you having "pub withdrawls" yet? You are really seroius, aren't you? I think maybe someday down the road, you might be able to handle going back there again. (Or maybe not, if you grow to hate the smell of smoke like I do) Just don't go back till you feel sure that you are ready. :nono: I admire your strength. Lot's of young people your age would've gave in and gone back by now. :)

So , you were off tonight? You missed a great game. Really close most of the game, with the lead going back and forth. Laker's used to be the King's biggest rivals, till the Laker's team made all of these changes during the off season. Yes, we did watch the last quarter of the Detroit/Miami game, another good game, real close, all the way till the end.

Good luck finding that pumpkin pie, neighty, and let me know how you like it after you eat some! :p Has quitting smoking increased your snacking/eating? You mentioned chocolate, do you like it? I appreciate the taste of it more since I quit smoking, but don't have it very often, as it's too fattening. :(

Well, off to bed now. Hubby gets off work early on Friday nights. The only night we go to bed before 2.
Thanks for rooting on my team..and good luck pulling off your 6 day stint at work.
nite...

hey all! I made it! One month and going on one day. It still amazes me how easy this was. We went to lunch at a bar and grill that had no non smoking areas, (wednesday) with my inlaws. After a great meal, my husband (who was taking his lunch break with us) said he wanted to kill some time before he went back to work so we were going to chat for a bit. well, I had to get out of there. The smoke was sickening, it hurt my eyes, my throat. I said "I am so sorry, but I have to get out of here, the smoke is making me sick" . I have never said that in my entire life! I still miss the smell, that is the hardest actually for me-but it depends-it can only be the smell of one not hundreds, ya know? I am getting over that too though.
It is funny, a little over a year ago I lived in San Diego and felt like the odd man out, since NO ONE hardly smoked and you couldn't smoke inside. Then, I move to vegas thinking, great, I can smoke inside again! Now that I quit, I am the odd one out again!
BUT, in a good way this time
I am having a hard time sleeping right now though-my back and neck hurt so bad. I am supposed to have my fusion in a couple of weeks or so, as we hope (waiting for preauth). Everyone keep up the good work!

Wooohoooo...go mel! One month, no smokes, yay! :jester:
Yeah, doesn't it feel good now to be the odd man out on the smart side this time? I tell you the truth, I was embarressed to even BE KNOWN as a smoker, near the last before I quit. You know I'm in Ca, and it's pretty much shunned out here. I don't have to hide any more, or be ashamed and humiliated. Yes, it is sickening when you are near a bunch of smokers, isn't it? Sounds like you are on the right track, Mel, just stay on it, and you'll be fine, girl!!! :)

Helloooo

Just come off my six day stint. Only been on my puter to check for emails this past week - thats about it. Come in go bed go work. Some catching up to do....Yes we do have waitresses serving the coffee up to a certain time...we do not even have to tip them :p

Regarding the smoke area - we (oops not me) have to go outside to smoke, I think thats the case for all work areas except restaurants/pubs etc.

Still not been pub  but have a slight withdrawal. We suppose to have a get together/reunion on Saturday but I do not think I will be going. Probably avoid the social scene until other side of Christmas. :(

Glad to see the Kings win, I saw most of the game they played against Memphis the other night at work. Another win. I cheered them on again and they won :) I think they should employ me :D .

Non stop eating Deda, Three times this week I have got home for about 5.20 am and been eating pizza. Only one piece each morning though.

I do not cut it up in triangles, I leave it whole :D

Anyway, hope you have had a good week. I see that there are some new posts on the board so I better get reading them.

Just to note. I have suffered the most this week (not on my knees or anything). I think I was not concentrating enough and getting complacent. Anyway I have been using the odd bit of nicotine gum this week. Felt a bit depressed/down due to the quitting this week. Not an issue really as when the carves hit, I was not craving for a smoke just a crave for nicotine. On a day to day basis I have sorted out the cigarette issue, I have virtually lost all need for a smoke (not nicotine yet) but still not ventured out to pub yet.

Will read other posts quickly and go bed

Oh, I have six days off now :bouncing: :bouncing:

Three weeks, two days, 18 hours, 36 minutes and 8 seconds. 404 cigarettes not smoked, saving £44.46. Life saved: 1 day, 9 hours, 40 minutes.

Hi Mel and Toneighty,,,

Way to go both of you! :D LOL, Mel about your teeth hurting. I sucked on a lot of lolli's too! You sound enthusiastic about your upcoming surgery, you brave girl! You know it's better to go into surgery as a non smoker than a smoker? Your lungs will handle the anesthesia much better.

Neighty, nice to hear you are doing so well too. :) What's this about all the ferocious eating, huh? :nono: Oh, I'm just kidding. I did the same thing..it eventually leveled off. Now I'm back to eating normal again. You are doing so good. Still amazed at your ability to resist your reg. social hangouts, but good for you! The link you sent me didn't work, even after I copied and pasted it into my browser...darn it! LOL! That Pizza sounds so good. I LOVE pizza...mmmm, it's SO good! :) Did you go food shopping yet, and look for the pumpkin pie? I'll write more later, going to bed too.

Deda :p

Hello

Still not gone shopping yet Deda, so I have to wait for the pumkin pie.

NEWS: Been pub tonight. I was asked to go for a few days but was going to chicken out. However, someone rang me up to sort out some computer problems so I said stuff it, seeing that I am out - me going pub :p Four of us there. One never smoker, one ex smoker for 12 years, one current smoker and me. It was a bit of a struggle, at times I new I was missing something and I knew that was the ciggerattes :( But also I knew I would find it a bit difficult to inhale that smoke. Through the evening I was wanting that "pleasure" but I did not go for it. Them cancer sticks were not going to win.

It was the biggest test yet but them death sticks can go and .... ......... :nono: (you get my drift)

After consuming a few ales, my eye sight is not as good as it should be :dizzy: :D so I am going bed

Yes...I GET YOUR DRIFT!!!! ;) Way to go neighty! Maybe take some toothpicks along with you next time, to chew on, and poke into your mouth. Did you take any gum along? I think in time, it will get a little easier. At least not all of them were smoking! (one is bad enough though, huh?)

So, how many weeks now since toneighty has had his last cigarette? At least 4, by now? Real proud of you, neighty! :nono:

Well, we just returned from a long night of Christmas shopping, and I'm pooped! Keep up the great work in keeping yourself non smoking! :D

Hi Deda

Just had one piece of gum that evening split into three. May go out Monday.

Have you spent up with the Christmas shopping? I wished I was as prepared as you. I leave it up to the very last minute, just before shops close on Christmas Eve :o . But may not even be able to do that this time around could be working it :( Worse thing is my family keeps growing and its not my fault  ;) its the other members of my family :D .

Was given a cigar at work as someone has just had a child (not himself but his wife :) ). Took it off him automatically and it took a second to kick in but I thought I better not refuse, however gave it to the young lad who was suppose to give up last week. (he did for five days).

Its 8.00am saturday morning just finished work and and as ever  so going bed.

Hope everyone here is doing well.

Byeeee

One month :p , one day, 20 hours, 39 minutes and 11 seconds. 541  cigarettes not smoked, saving £59.58 :D . Life saved: 1 day, 21 hours, 5 minutes.

Hi tonighty...

Nice to hear from you, and glad to see that you're still smoke free! (hey I'm a poet and didn't know it ;) )

NO, I'm not even close to being done Christmas shopping...I wish. Tomorrow I'm, (we're) putting up all of the decorations, yard decor, etc. Still have a lot of people to buy for. How bout you? :)

Glad you gave that cigar away! You have really done a good job!
Maybe we should start a new thread now, as this one is getting to be a few miles long! LOL! :D

Wow, over a month already! You rock, neighty! :jester:
