View Full Version : Orthopedic Dr. or Podiatrist?

Hello! I have a "bump" on the top of my foot where the big toe connects to the foot. It is not a bunion. I asked my orthopedic Dr. about it when I was there to get my elbow checked. I forget what he called it but said if it began to get too painful or I didn't like it cosmetically that he could do surgery to shave the bone to flatten it. It is pretty pronouned and is painful, especially with certain shoes. I can live with it a while, but it will not ever go away on its own. My question is which type of doctor is better to handle this? Orthopedic or Podiatrist?

Thanks for any replies.

I would not have an OS touch my feet unless they specialize in feet and ankles. That is my personal preference. My suggestion is that you get a second opinion or maybe even a third and include a podiatrist in the group and then make your decision. I am not confident that the problem you described is as simple as shaving off the bone, so I'd get it checked out further. Best wishes - eko

Eko,
I feel the same way. I would go to an orthopedic surgeon ONLY if he/she specializes in feet. Remember feet are complex, require a lot of attention when it comes to diagnosing a problem and they have to take you everywhere you go for the rest of your life...

GeorgiaGirl,
find yourself a dr who specializes in feet. Look for a foot clinic or something in your area.

I highly recommend you consult with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot surgery. Find a group that is affiliated with a teaching hospital, if possible. Usually such a group will have knee people, foot people, etc. I had consultations with 3 foot specialists before I found a doctor I felt comfortable with - and now I'm glad I didn't use the first 2.

I agree with you VeggieQueen58. That is exactly what I found. And had opinions from several folks, even the radiologist. There opinions are very good and they explore all the possibilites and cross reference their checks and rule out all the symptoms..

Good luck to all.

Chantel.

Whoever you choose, make sure that they are Board Certified. Podiatry has one real board - American Board of Podiatric Surgery - and some other non-surgical qualifying boards. Only go to a Podiatrist/Podiatric Surgeon that is a member of this. The other organization is the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. You can search their website for people in your area.
